Poki is right.

I am still unsure whether to get a 13" again or 15". It will all depend on the specs, but a quad core 13" is very tempting indeed. Portability with some power - I use all cores in a lot of apps I use so will benefit a lot on this upcoming upgrade.
Love the design and portability of the 13".
May have to get a MacBook and a 15" to remove the compromises :).
I share this uncertainty, but it's really just a matter of screen size vs portability for me. When in the office it's no problem, I use an external monitor (the MacBook's own display is just somewhere I can stick video conferencing displays where they won't get in the way of my checking other things). But at home or when off-site the lack of space on the 13" screen is often an annoyance. Conversely the 15" would be better for those uses, but while it's much lighter and a bit smaller than my previous (2010) 15" it would be awkward on trains and very awkward on planes.

Either will do for cpu power (any serious computing is done on the grid, not on a laptop), and hopefully storage options will be more reasonably priced in the next round. So for me it's purely a matter of which compromise on size vs display area will be least frustrating (I'm not going to waste time wishing for an intermediate size, because that's not going to happen).

I know it's dumb to say this but I'm gonna be so pissed if this version isn't fixed because in my mind he made a false promise. Especially considering that if I was in his shoes I would choose my words extremely carefully to avoid disappointing people like me who are clinging to any clue as to the direction of Apple.

Plus I have some weird faith that we have somehow not heard the full extent of these new MBPs. I feel that they must be somehow "more pro" whatever that means. At least keyboard issues. The sad thing is I know I'm being ridiculous, but I just feel that Ive was making a promise. I think they heard the complaints after the 2016 model but couldn't change things with one year, which is why he said his comment shortly after the 2017 came out (if I'm not mistaken) because he knew they'd be ready for 2018. I don't think they can afford to wait til 2019 or 2020 because regular consumers often eat food while using their comps (i know this is different for techies) and they are going to be extremely upset when their keyboard stops working. Apple may be fine with ignoring pros but they won't ignore their core demographic: the average user.

That's exactly what I was thinking! Maybe it was way to soon to "re-make" the MBP in 2017, and they are doing it now. Maybe it's going to be the perfect Macbook Pro this year!

Still no leaks about the MBP 2018 (and also iPad Pro 2018) even they are supported to be out within five weeks? Given that the Air is delayed, I am concerned that the delay may also happen to these devices. Just wait and wait and waste time not getting any real work done.

5 more weeks is not too long to know for sure.

I have been keeping all my projects on hold. I have deadlines to meet this summer. If Apple cannot deliver, I need to choose products from other manufacturers right away.
Honestly if the lack of a computer is stopping you from doing your work, then there's no shame in just buy one right now. Yes it would be painful to see a new one arrive so soon thereafter, but for you it'd simply be a business expense and as such should be bought when it's needed.

I suppose you could also pick a retailer like Amazon with a ≥ 30 day return policy and order one of the current machines there in a week or two, and then wait and work with it till June 4th which would be less than 30 days away at that point. If the 2018 models have arrived by then you could return your old one and buy a new one, and otherwise just keep the current machine. It might not make the retailer very happy but there's no shame in doing that if it helps you get the new model and get some work done in the meantime.

That's my take. I'm running a 2013 15". Very nice machine but horrible, horrible image retention on display. I sat through 2016 because of less than positive reviews, the price increase, etc. Sat though 2017 because it did not change. 2018 is my year to replace my current MBP. If Apple still sends out what it has the last two years, I am likely to try Dell or Lenovo. Booting Windows to a desktop rather than using the tiles gives an experience more like MacOS.

I have no complaints about the Apple tax as long as I don't have to read about problems like I have seen with the last two model years. Design elements that almost require the expensive Applecare plus purchase. C'mon Apple, swallow some pride and dump the "art" vision of computers.

Considering HP can make the spectre thinner than the rMB, use regular fan-cooled ultrabook cpus and still get a standard style keyboard in I think Apple need to pull their socks up in engineering a no-compromise machine. Maybe if we go past WWDC with no new model we might get a completely new design in the autumn? It’s a break with Apple’s traditional way of doing things but discontent seems to be mounting.

I too am waiting to upgrade my Mid-2012 MacBook Pro 2.3 GHz i7 to the next generation of MacBook Pro. With previous new MacBook Pros, are they typically released the same day they are announced? If not, how long after the announcement does it take most national retailers to receive stock?

BTW, I've noticed some pretty good sales on 2017 MacBook Pros lately, with some models discounted by as much as $350, which is pretty tempting. Is this type of retailer behavior indicative of a pending new model release?

Sometimes they are available the same day they are announced, and sometimes they are available weeks later.

It is indicative of retailers guessing there will be new model releases, so they try to clear out old stock in preparation.

However, sometimes when they do this, they turn out to be wrong. For example, I bought my second iPad Air 2 one year after it came out, for $100 off, around the time some were predicting it would be updated. It didn't get updated, and the retailers raised the price back up again after the sale.

I have waited for over two years already.

The thing is based on Apple's recent performance, a new design could lead to more disappointments and troubles.

Apple needs to get back to producing the best computers it can, not just what looks good and sells, it's really a vortex right now, with the entire computer line a mess. Apple needs to straighten up, serve it's customers first and foremost rest will happen. Right now Apple is just burning it's hard earned reputation...

  • Restore the "Pro" part of the MBP
  • Release a new 17" MBP
  • Fix the software issues with macOS
Other than that, can't say I'm not extremely satisfied with my Apple products and the service provided.

To me Apple needs to provide a tier of Mac's including notebooks that are more aligned with professional use or stop pretending with the "we value professionals" meme it's just insulting, current MBP is a nice, if unreliable consumer based device...

macOS, never thought I'd be back on Windows again, however here I am. thx Apple really appreciate that one. Get in the bed or get out, support your professional audience or stop ********ting the general public, as that Halo Effect is evaporating fast...

Bring on the DJ's let's all have another laugh :p or maybe Phil can entertain us with yet more amusing ditties of why Apple just cant...

There usually aren't any MBP leaks unless it's something significant. We saw a top case leak for the MBP in 2016 at the end of May iirc, and that was it. More people care about iPhone leaks than they do with the MBP, and it shows.

Here are my ideal Apple laptop and computer lines

macbook air - high end super mobile [13"]. Bring it back to its roots.
macbook - for the consumer [13 + 15"] / overlaps with use for most pro's too.
macbook pro - workstation [14 + 16"] just better than it is now, in CPU / GPU / RAM.

Imac - consumer desktop
Mac Pro - modular workstation.
27" 5k Monitor with built in PCI for GPU that can also be used with the macbookpro, to allow it to be a real desktop. Thickness of the monitor is not a big deal, so make it work please.

No iMac pro or Mac mini.

Do I get a job Apple?

Not just food but also dust in general, my colleagues got theirs broken and they are super careful with their machines..

Seriously you people. Expecting Apple to design keyboards that don't break when dust gets in it. What else do you want - ergonomic wireless mice? adjustable height iMacs? Reasonable GPU in a professional laptop? Want want want....... ;)

From this shot of the Macbook Pro touch bar teardown from ifixit, it seems to be the case that the batteries don't necessarily even need the terraced design - they could simply be made bigger.
Well, you also got to leave room for heat expansion. But yes, they probably had a deal on those batteries and are using them until larger efficient ones come to their price range.

Judging by the numbers Apple Insider gathered, the keyboard failure rate isn‘t too bad - the keyboard is the cause for 11.8% of all defects on the 2016, 8.1% of all defects on the 2017 model. Considering a lot of MBPs don‘t have any defects within the first year, these numbers aren‘t too bad. Especially the 2017 MBP isn‘t too far away from the previous design with ~6% of defects attributed to the keyboard.

IMHO, these numbers are certainly no reason to avoid the current MBP.

Finally someone did get actual numbers on this. Whats with noting is that their figures are in lines with other informal reports I've seen about this issue (like this redditor who was quitting their IT department's statistics). Also in line with our experience (1 failed keyboard out of 20 machines or so within 2 years of use).
