So we can assume that if apple will not update mb in march or at wwdc they go straight to cannon lake in fall 2018?!

Nope. H-series Cannonlake chips will probably only be available in spring / summer 2019, so Apple would have to wait for that if they wanted to skip 8th gen.

Is it likely Apple will do this and just wait until 2019 like you said?

I can't imagine that they want the competition to run left and right with quad-core 13" and six-core 15" notebooks with performance advantages north of 40% while just sitting it out. This is not like in 2015 where the new chips would have brought a 3% performance gain, so no, I don't think Apple can or wants to wait this long.

My bet would be on a release as soon as possible, which depends on Intel's CPU roadmap. We don't know yet when Intel can supply their H-series parts, but they should announce it relatively soon.

Maybe at an event in March April time? i could see Apple doing that or waiting until June or October event, last year Apple held a June and September event but no October or early March to April event so who knows.

They don't even need to hold a press conference to update the MacBook Pro line-up. But in any case, I'd say an update is possible from the end of February. When we know Intel's schedule, we'll have a better idea when exactly we can get our hands on the new MacBook Pros. My guess would be April.

This is true they could just do a silent update like they have done in the past, silent updates do tend to happen around March-April time so I guess we will see. I’m waiting for either a 13” Quad Core or a 6 Core 15” MacBook Pro for Final Cut Pro X as it’s a power hog when editing.

They could do a spring event with new MacBooks / MBPs, iPhone SE2, some watch band stuff, and an “and it’s available in stores today!” HomePod re-announcement (time at the event will be used to discuss whatever new Siri features they were working on that made them delay it). EDIT 2: They can also announce High Sierra's eGPU support coming out of beta

Then WWDC could be desktop macs (new iMacs, Mac Pro “preview” [like iMP last year], Mac Mini). I’m unsure whether the new iPads would be in either of these or saved for September with new iPhones and maybe a new :apple: Pencil.

EDIT 1: September event would obviously be new iPhones, and I think a new watch. Having a longer than 1 year gap between S3 and S4 would let them do something more substantial with the hardware. Like a large change in thickness. Hopefully it won’t require different bands.

Hello, after reading this thread, I think I will wait as well. I was about to buy the MBP below for $2,300 USD but hopefully I can wait a couple more months and get something better for the same price.

You all are way better versed in Apple pricing history than me, can we expect to see better specs for the same prices with the 2018 MBP? What kind of specs can I expect to see for $2,300 with the 2018 MBP? 1TB SSD is a must for me...

Apple 13.3" MacBook Pro (Mid 2017, Space Gray)
  • 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 Dual-Core
  • 16GB of 2133 MHz RAM | 1TB PCIe SSD
  • 13.3" 2560 x 1600 Retina Display

think about it....we, expect Apple to put in the 13" MBP quad core cpu instead of that dual core...same 16 gb RAM, i think a better iGPU etc

I'm not sure if they can really do a silent update. I think the keyboard needs a significant redesign given the relatively high failure rates.

I doubt if Apple ever really 'admits' that has made mistakes in their products...
there is always some kind of excuse, even if the majority of users tell that a decision was wrong...
Of course, it is not a good tactic to systematically ignore user base signs. Tolerance has a limit.

Right. If they revamp the keyboard in any way, you can bet your bum they aren't going to admit it's a reactionary move to fix a mistake they made.

What's crazy is that a 15 year old iBook has a keyboard that's 1000% better than the one in the current MBP. I understand the lack of physical space in the current machine preventing that sort of keyboard from perhaps ever being seen again in an Apple laptop, but it's kind of strange to see so many improvements made across the board year over year while one of the most basic -- and most important -- components has absolutely nosedived to a point where not only is there a QC issue, there's a significant productivity issue for people that need to type a lot to work.

All for the sake of thinner and lighter.

Well... they did with the Mac Pro. So here's hoping that "the new Apple" CAN actually admit mistakes and then fix them.

The problem with the keyboard is that other than making tweaks to improve reliability, any major overhaul would probably need to come with the next form factor change, so I can't see anything in 2018.

As for the keyboard itself, its split opinion - there were people who really like it - the main concern seems to be about reliability.

Its a strange one because the Magic Keyboard has a nice amount of travel - I don't know why they didn't just go for that - it wouldn't even have meant a much thicker case to accommodate it.

No they won't say that. They will do a glossy video with Jony voice-over saying how 2 years ago we introduced the butterfly keyboard with <insert Jony design cliches here>. Now, we introduce a new and improve butterfly keyboard that has even better design cliches than the last one, that we call Butterfly 2.0......

There won't be any mention of failure rates

The problem there is that it might require the MacBook Pro to change design if that’s the case then I can’t see them doing that this year. Specs wise it may be a silent update, the keyboard they may leave until next year or 2020 with a new redesign.
