There's at least a slight possibility that we'll see the 16.5" as a new model at WWDC or late in the year - not replacing the 15" but as an alternative above it - I have to say I'm surprised by the mailed-in update (an overclocked 8 core in that chassis???)

Seriously though, who actually expected they’d redesign the MacBook Pro after three years? The original MacBook Pro used the same overall design as the aluminum PowerBook G4, in 2008 they switched to the unibody models, 2012 retina, 2016 Touch Bar. It only makes sense to be 2020, and this is what I expected.

Well, this upgrade means the bigger redesign (smaller bezels, etc) is not coming this year?

only way it would be coming is if they are using the keyboard in these machines in the newer design. They wouldn't release the 2019's if they updated the pros with a different keyboard in October. Makes no sense

good design is good design though :)
the 911 maintains its base look
Eames lounge chair has not changed still a wow chair

so radical redesign is not the thing I look at more than does it work ? like many here I would be OK with the pro being a bit thicker and get better cooling more ports and things pros in creative field want need use and make a line even thinner for the commuter carry around types that do more office kinda work

PCs seems to get constant little thing so here is a little thing in many ways and whhhaaaaaaaaaa out come the whiners

oh well :) I will be like so many here curious to see what the new keyboards are like and if its the modern apples version of we fixed it meaning they changed it and pray it works ? cause I do not feel apple is every coming back to its glory days of superior design hardware sadly

He's not good a good track record tbh.

Yes he does, last year he predicted near enough everything correct.

Apple Watch Series 4 with ECG
iPhone XS and XS Max as well as XR
iPad Pros with an all new design
AirPods 2

He got all of those correct. I think the 16” new design has either been delayed or it’s coming at an October event.

Great, so a laptop with thermal issues gets more processing power. The keyboard gets some shiny new hack to replace the old hack and we're still missing hardware keys in favour of something that sounds like a feature only Jimmy Saville would be interested in.

I need a laptop for work. But my client's making noises about me having to use a MBP from them with all their spyware on. I know the second I buy one of these overpriced bricks I'm going to be told I can't use it for work.

I'm torn between buying relatively spartan base model 13" i5, 16GB, 512GB and just replacing the frayed power cord on my 2013 13" i7, 16GB, 1TB SSD. Ugh.

I love the 911 "base" design...

However we are talking about Macs over here and we all know that this design doesn't behave well with Intel's Skylake architecture and forward... Heck look at my 13" TB 2017... Throw some Photoshop on it or a VM /w Safari and there we go the machine starts heating up and slowly more and more keys get stuck.

Something is definitely wrong on both ends of the spectrum.. Including both Apple and Intel.

Yeah I know what you mean... Plus these refreshes bring nothing new in terms of GPU power... I'm gonna continue to wait for Navi to eventually upgrade to a 15".

There are no 10nm for suitable processors in 2019 or 2020 on the intel roadmap at least
Let me at least hope for 2020!

They wouldn't update the existing line if a redesign were scheduled for October. At this point the redesign will surely wait for Ice Lake, which means not before 2020, probably late 2020 if at all.

I am trying to decide which MacBook I should buy: I am between MacBook Air and the new Pro.
You must be rather confused about your requirements? I mean do you, or don't you, need more CPU than for casual use?

Why so many people talk about 16'' model?
Are we pretty sure that the next big redesign will eliminate bezels and gain a 16'' screen on the chassis of a 15''-sized model?

I think gaining an extra inch will help with the thermals.
Dave2D brings up the idea of better handling thermals in a larger case.

To be honest I don’t need all the horsepower offered by the Pro line. That is why I am wondering whether a MBA would be the one for me. However, the low brightness and lack of P3 colour gamut annoy me a little bit for the price range. That is why I am seriously considering a 13” MBP.

They have in the past, remember 2012? they introduced the retina Macbook Pro at WWDC. Also last year we got the Macbook Pro updates with True Tone and a few other things, later in November they added the Vega graphics option.

I'm not saying they will do the same thing at WWDC this year, maybe at an October event? i'm not sure.

Apple is probably waiting for 10nm from Intel, or they are gonna switch to in house CPU+GPU.
If they are waiting for Intel, 2021 for redesign at earliest. If they are switching to their own cpu we can expect a redesign in 2020.

With 10nm and redesign, I will wait for other users to be beta testers. With switching to their own cpu, well, I will have to wait at least 2-3 years for software to catch up.

Either way, I'm away from Apple for a long period of time. And there are more like me, and there will be even more like me.

I’ve waited for a while, if you have seen previous posts by me I have gone back and forward between waiting, getting the new Air, waiting again because of the keyboard issue. Now I’m at a point where I don’t want to wait any more.

I’m going to give it a week and see what the initial teardowns and reviews say, but during the week of WWDC I will be buying a new MacBook. I just hope the new material Apple have used fixes the keyboard issue.

I’m very much looking at the 13” MacBook Pro, what I’ve noticed tho is they don’t seem to have upgraded the processors on the 13” all that much, compared with last years version anyway.

Don't get your hopes high. I highly doubt they will release a 16/16.5 inch model during WWDC.

Two Main Reasons:
1. If they have other MBP products there is no reason for releasing the 15inch updates now. They can just release them all together. It's not like announcing new MBPs with better CPUs will take them too much time during the presentation.
2. There are no significantly better CPUs/GPUs at this moment they could use in a bigger MBP. In order to sell bigger models that are different enough from the 15inch - they need to show that there is a big performance gap to justify the price - and I simply don't see they have a lot of options to do that this year.
If they do release a 16inch with similar CPU/GPU but says it has better thermals - that basically admits that the 15inch design cannot effectively handle the thermals (which may or may not be true). That's a big middle finger to all 15inch owners.
Better screens? They do not affect performance much. I highly doubt that can justify the price gap between the 16 & the 15 if their performance is not that different.

I doubt there will be another MBP release this year either for similar reasons. That doesn't mean Ming Chi Kuo is completely wrong on this one. There must be a new chassis under development it just might not be for this year. R&D often takes years and the final product might be very very different from what the initial leaks show.
