What we actually got instead:
Core i9 8 core 16 threads i9-9880H
2.3 GHz (Turbo Boost 4.8 GHz) 16 MB cache

I expected the top end i9 CPU but didn't expect them using the other i9 CPU i9-9880H but instead a second i7 CPU model.

I expected Apple to release the 2019 15" model along the 2019 13" models but what I couldn't predict was Apple releasing the 15" so soon with a 13" 2019 MacBook Pro that's only using the already existing 8th gen Intel CPUs. This 13" model refresh is beyond ridiculous. At least we can all celebrate the new 4th gen butterfly keyboard.

Everything we were fearing came true. No redesign, same thickass bezels, 4th gen butterfly keyboards, still no physical function keys (not even escape key), still no ports other than usb-c, no magsafe, same pricing, same ridiculous 256gb SSD in base models.

Wow, I wasn’t expecting an update today. What happened to Ming Chi Kuos rumour/report of a 16” redesign, that guy is usually very accurate.

Well I guess it’s time to buy a new MacBook Pro :)

with the idiot in charge I could see him screwing over people and announce another macbook pro at WWDC but you know this is a real pro one so the color will be different or something stupid

they do not care about their past its all about sell and money and screw the fans enough folks in China buying stuff and other countries a few apple computer fan boys can go cry might be the new corporate thinking

I still prefer OS X for working in over windows so will stick with OS X for a while and wait till WWDC see what is said then pick up a new laptop

just sad to see the old apple get replaced by this new one with no care about QC or proper design testing before it goes out inconsistencies and so on like many here feel to

They may just have the 16.5 mob at wwdc
Then update the other models with slimmer bezels later

2020 seems like when the redesign will happen. By then it might be too late for Apple. I know a lot of people switching to Windows. Same design, better keyboard (potentially), more cores but same thermal design flaws, same ok but boring graphics. Not sure why they didn't wait for Intel 10nm and AMD Navi (or updated Vega Pros). I doubt they do another update, or redesign for that matter, later this year.

They really need to hit a home run next year for me to keep upgrading my Macs. Right now, the 15" Razer Blade, and Thinkpad X1E Gen 2 are looking like better deals. Also worth waiting for are the updates for the Surface Book 3 later this year.

I don’t think any of us saw that coming hahaha! Been nice dreaming with you guys and gals. As much as I wanted a redesign, I think I might actually go for the new 15”.

Not sure why you would think that. You can even type in google “Surface Studio vs” and it will auto fill “iMac Pro”... They are both high end all-in-one machines with a target audience of professional users, specifically those in the design field. They definitely both have features that distance themselves from each other but at the end of the day, they go after very similar markets. I definitely agree that they are very different devices (surface studio is basically a giant drawing pad) but they definitely do compete for the same customers. So, I think it’s a good idea to keep the iMac Pro around and keep updating it.

I am the customer.
However I suggest you look at the specifications and then tell me they are the same. Not even remotely close on cpu.
I don’t care that reviewers pit them against each other - it’s a stupid argument. 8 core Xeon vs laptop cpu....... a joke.

everyone could make such an pred, get over it and stop flaming, no one cares. Wifi ax , i smiled when you thought that
[doublepost=1558468511][/doublepost]Now the question is, if the new material will keep the dust away, and if it will keep at least the same feeling as the 3d keyboard (maybe even better, but i doubt) or we are back on the same feeling as the 2016 ?!

And a till I was the only one who brought it up here instead of imaginary over the top expectations that others posted.

Here are the 2019 models folks. Three updates in ten months. Wow... but minimal. Let's see how the keyboard will work. I felt happy again for buying an iMac + 13" low end nTB mbp before.

Suddenly, buying the 2018 model when it was $500 off didn't seem like a bad choice knowing you could potentially get one of these new keyboards should anything go awry.

Hindsight's a bitch.
If this is the only MBP update we get this year, then I actually feel fine about buying a 2018 model last year when it launched instead of waiting another year. It looks like I'll get the improved keyboard anyway (if I ever need to bring it in because of a keyboard failure), and the new CPUs is not something I'm very excited about anyway, they may look great on paper but they probably won't perform that great within their thermal constraints anyway. And there seem to be zero changes other than that.

The only thing I sort-of regret not waiting for is the Vega chips – had I known they'd be coming in October already, I may have waited these four additional months. But this refresh doesn't make me regret my purchase.

I’m actually pretty satisfied with the upgrade. Better CPUs and better keyboard (I’ll wait for test though) are both welcome. I do wish they had updated the GPU options though. IMO Vega 16 should be the new standard chip...

Other than that, as much as I wanted a redesign, it’s not too bad. They concentrated on the keyboard which is all I wanted.

I do wonder where those rumors about the 16” came from... Is it a late 2019 model or has it been delayed until 2020/2021?

Don't give up hope yet on the 16 inch MacBook Pro just yet. Apple might actually introduce this at a special event in October to go along with macOS 10.15 and new MacBook Air's and MacBooks.

Remember they refreshed the 2018 model with fast Vega GPU's the same year in October, but only announced it as a footnote.
The big refresh will surely wait for the 10nm CPUs next year.

And it may be the best model for some time as it is the full refined version of the 2016 +line, just as the 2015 is considered the best version of the 2012 line. This was a very smart update on Apple's part. it allows them to 'address' the keyboard issue as best as they could while not making any waves over it. In the next revision - they can create a new type of keyboard and it will just be rolled into all the other novel features, hence no fuss.

Another thing to note is the increase in release cadence, which is something people heavily complained about years prior. Now they got it. Apple is moving towards a pattern of releasing new MPBs very soon after Intel is able to deliver chips. If Intel is or AMD are able to deliver new CPUs/GPUs we can now start to expect that an MBP model will follow soon after. This gives us a better outlook of when to expect new model updates.

My prediction is that this is the last refresh of the 2016 MBP lineup, and we’ll be the new MBPs on 2020.

Next redesign will probably come with a much more energy efficient CPU, either 10nm Intel Sunny Cove (Ice Lake), or the new Apple ARM processor for macOS. Either of those will require less energy, thus the new redesign will be able to be thinner and lighter (especially with an ARM processor).

I think it is time to jump into the waiting for the 2020 MBP train! Although for now, I just jumped from an aging 2010 13” MacBook Pro to a 11” iPad Pro as a -momentary?- replacement.

Sigh...Looks like my base 2015 is going to hold on for another year. Guess it's time for a fresh install. Really was excited about some new screen tech and an updated T2 chip that fixes the issues plaguing some users. Hopefully this quiet update means that the full refresh could come out later this year. Really want OLED/MLED and Navi. At least they are taking the keyboard stuff seriously now.

Also pardon my lack of knowledge about CPU releases (the names/delays/variations have made it very hard to follow), but is it possible to have MBP appropriate Ice Lake CPU's later this year? Or would that be strictly 2020/2021?

Honestly I want mini LED or micro LED for the next MacBook Pro and iPad Pro. An OLED display could mean burn in issues and visual fatigue (because of the way OLED displays used by Apple dim the screen). I hope next year Apple will have either of those technologies available for the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro lineup. And 2020 iPhone, hopefully.

4th gen of keyboard design in 4 years.
Now that's progress!

RIP MBP. We had some great times together.
