For any functionality limitations (real or perceived), the bottleneck is iOS itself... not the iPad hardware.
I beg to disagree. There are hardware based limitations on either iPad Pro, especially obvious when comparing both (as e.g. 9to5 Mac did it here). Each model has its unique shortcomings - or let's say compromises, showing those are somewhat "gen.1" devices (as far as the iPad Pro variants are concerned).

You can argue whether those limitations are more or less relevant to a prospective buyer, but they are definitely there, hardware-based. Thus I'm also waiting for the "gen.2" iPad Pro's and I'll happily pay full price for one if the existing limitations relevant to me will be removed.

You are free to disagree. The bottom line is even if the gen 2 of 12.9 Pro includes everything that the 9.7 Pro has (and vice versa), the bottleneck will still be how little the hardware is exploited by iOS.

I would consider e.g. the USB2-speed Lightning port on the 9.7" iPP a true bottleneck (iPP 12.9 has USB3-speed), which can even be measured in dry numbers, whereas the hardware exploitation level by iOS is pretty difficult to really measure and more a nuisance in comparison.

Correct and Given that Zero Apps are Optimized to utilize the Ultra Rare Tri-Core A8X vs. Hundredss of Millions of Apps that are Dual Core Optimized having the Fastest Dual Core A9X is the way to go.
Most normal people will never notice a speed difference between the A8X and the A9X so the conversation is mute.....

Agreed. The A8X processor along with the 2gb of ram was a processor ahead of its time.

The iPad Air 2 (fall 2014) will and has aged gracefully. I fully expect it to be serviceable for a min 4 years (fall 2018) for 90% of people using iPad Air 2.

Similar how the iPad 2 (march 2011) was so far ahead of its time. It was serviceable for 90% of people till 2015.

My iPad Air gen1 is getting really tedious to even browse reddit or youtube with. I have the most recent iOS on it and did multiple clean reinstalls without using backups. Sadly, it feels extremely laggy in Safari usage (e.g. delayed keyboard input, tab reloading...) and other apps.

I desperately need a replacement.

The new rumor, if true, would be amazing. A 9.7 sized iPad with two full-sized iPad mini side-by-side, and the pixel density of an iPhone. That would truly be an iPad size without a compromise, and lighter too.

My only concern is that the iPad mini tap targets is too small for me and it will be too cumbersome to use it as an everyday work device with those small touch targets. Also a bigger canvas is always welcome. Plus I am pretty sure they can fit a 12.9-class keyboard on the 10.5, but the keys will be as small as the iPad mini's.

Here is to hoping my preferred upgrade which is a lighter 12.9 iPad pro with a smaller footprint.

Yep I'm getting a 12.9 Pro for Christmas. My original Air is starting to slow down, and I am starting back school in January. I decided to get the pencil as well for class so I'm excited. I got around $150 off a 128gb IPP and pencil right before Thanksgiving. I've been patiently waiting for Christmas morning. I possible could have waited, but who knows just how big of an upgrade the 12.9 will receive? I got a decent deal and I needed a Christmas gift so there you go. A new IPP. :)

DON'T doubt your purchase, you have an amazing machine, These Apple iPads are the BEST Tablets in the world, PERIOD, enjoy your purchase my friend

Yeah, it's time for the battery to improve. I'm positive it will, since the iPhone 7 got 2 hours, so I can see the iPad getting that as well.

Or we'll stay at 10 hours battery life and get even more performance. That's my guess for an iPad Pro(ductive) anyways. With the 10nm process (if true) and the energy saving/performance cores this might be a great performer, even relatively to the first iPP.

Apple could cut 12.9 ipad weight&size significantly by using OLED display (lighter than LCD) and seamless wireless charge (smaller battery).

OLED maybe sometimes, wireless charging not so much. I mean, you'd basically load this thing forever as wireless charging is a lossy process and it takes long even with the trusted wire ;) If wireless loading is great, then with small batteries, aka Apple Watch and maybe iPhone next.

Yeah, I think wireless charging for an iPad is a waaays off. Even on the upcoming iPhone "8" I think it will be limited. Time will tell, but something as large as an iPad won't be getting wireless charging for a few more years in my opinion.

The event won't be announced until about the week before, Apple usually sends out press invites 1 week before the event. It's difficult to say if the iPad Pro 2 will be worth the wait, I've got a 12.9" iPad Pro and it's a great device, I'm finding it difficult to see what they will add to it in order to get people to upgrade! Maybe true tone and a better display, a higher storage would be nice, but I'm guessing that the best features will be in iOS 11 since Apple have been rumoured to be working on more features such as annotation within apps like safari and so on.

I think it's difficult to say at this point what they will include in the iPad Pro 2, nothing has leaked so far. That's if they are even updated in March, Apple could decide to wait until September and unveil them alongside the new iPhones at their new Apple Park campus.

Yeah im thinking of just getting the ipad pro 12.9 with an apple pencil. The pro 2 i doubt will be a crazy upgrade. Also... when ios 11 comes it. It will also come out for the pro 12.9 so it is so worth the 900$ for the 128gb model.

Yea, the only reason I'm thinking to upgrade to the iPad Pro 2 is because I really want 256GB storage, True Tone and hopefully a better display. The Apple Pencil 2 could also be announced, i'm thinking of picking up a Smart Keyboard but will wait until the March event (if it happens) incase they update those also.

With all the rumors of new iPads in a March event, don't you want to wait until the end of the month to see if something new comes out and at least drops prices of older models?

*sigh* I don't have a 12.9" tablet yet so the wait is becoming quite annoying. I almost pulled the trigger upon release in 2015 but with 8GB left out of 128GB (although more like 115GB user-accessible) on my 9.7" iPad, I really wanted 256GB storage. Planning on getting the Pro 12.9 via carrier. AT&T has been out stock while Verizon has had the current iPad Pro marked as ships by 03/31/2017 since February.

Oh well, I find my iPhone 7 (A10) noticeably snappier than my iPad Pro 9.7 (A9X) so I do think I'll appreciate the upgrade to A10X.

...keeping in mind that is simply rumor and wishful thinking at this point.

I guarantee that no iPad will get 6GB RAM in 2017.

I guess what surprises me by those who are holding out is the implication that somehow the current models aren't sufficient or at the very least beginning to be taxed by the current version of iOS. For any functionality limitations (real or perceived), the bottleneck is iOS itself... not the iPad hardware.

Those who who are waiting missed out on some terrific deals on the 12.9 iPad Pro. $150-$175 off sales are nothing to sneeze at... except that some did. :D

I agree. Hell, my outdated and archaic Air 1 is still getting the the job done. It runs very smoothly on the current OS and I suspect when 10.3 comes out it will run fine on that too. iPads are so NOT like phones where there's a compelling reason to get a new one constantly. They just work and keep working. I'll see what the new ones bring of course but I've held off to this point and haven't regretted it yet.

If the March event happens then you wont have long to wait. It will be interesting to see what Apple do with the iPad Pro 2 and if they update the Apple Pencil or not.

Don't really care much for the Apple Pencil. I have one for my Pro 9.7 but given my use case is primarily reading manga, ebooks and comics, and web surfing, I don't use it much. Now if Apple includes decent handwriting recognition via built-in keyboard, then maybe I'd use it more.

Is the grey ipad with black screen an older model? Because someone has a good deal on it. But when i check on the apple store the grey one has a white front screen.
[doublepost=1488780879][/doublepost]I just read on twitter that the ipad pro 2 should be announced in an event on april 18th. That is soo far and when its announced wont it take a couple of months till release ?
