I'm waiting for the iPad Mega next Fall.

(I'd love to see a 15" iPad if they can make it super thin and super light!)

With the new iPod starting at $299 and the iPad 2 still selling at $399 I can't see the mini selling for less than $349?

The iPhone is $650, the iPad is $500. Also, I think that once the iPad mini hits the market, the iPad 2 will go away.

I'm not in the US. White iPod Touch 8GB sold out in UK refurb store.

ahh...I just picked one up after reading your post. I am buying it for my GF's little girl and figured they will go fast considering the new ones START at $299!

USB 2.0 is fast enough at present: the limiting factor for writing is the flash memory in the iOS device, which based on iPhone 5 benchmarks cannot do sustained writes faster than about 26 MB per second, which is a little less than what USB 2.0 can typically achieve. USB 3.0 would not improve the write speed.

Flash memory read speeds are faster, but much more data is written than read via the USB cable, so there isn't a lot of point supporting USB 3.0 yet.

As flash memory write speeds improve, or if Apple changes the architecture to boost write speeds significantly (along the same lines as SSDs), then USB 2.0 will become a bottleneck. I expect future models will support USB 3.0 via the lightning connector, and come with a USB 3.0 lightning cable. Those models would still be compatible with USB 2.0 (using either the USB 3.0 lightning cable or a USB 2.0 lightning cable).

I expect the iPad Mini would have the same flash memory write speed as the iPhone 5 (same generation of memory technology), so it also would come with a USB 2.0 lightning cable. It may be a year or two before we see USB 3.0 on iOS devices.

Thank-you very much for this informative reply!

I think the only way a non-retina would work wit new and existing users is if they price it insanely cheap, then it would'nt affect the other Ipad market as there will always be those that want to pay the higher price to get the larger and better screen.

I'm (still) waiting for Mac Pro news and there are many waiting on iMac news.

I agree with you. And I guess if that's true (about ipad mini) I think they must be doing something great with next imac and macpro. So rumors and news should come soon.

I've been wondering this as well. I guess with the fire sale HP TouchPads, Amazon realized the only way a tablet can compete against the iPad is by price.

The pricing will definitely be a huge factor. Maybe they will surprise us and go $199....but then they would have a hard time selling the normal sized ipads.

Apple does not know how to make cheap high quality tablets (or a iPod touch). Apple would have to sale monthly streaming services to sale at $200. There is no guarantee that a iPad mini buyer is going to drop big bucks in the Apple store especially if they already bought apps on the iPad. Apple must price this above $300.
I think it would have been better if Apple reduced the cost of the current iPad to $400. The iPad mini's screen resolution and size is already at a disadvantage. I can actually fit a Nexus 7 in my pocket; while tight it is possible. At 7.85 inch it will be just slightly more portable than the current model and still not pocketable.

I for one has always felt the iPad is to big and heavy. I would seriously consider an iPad mini. Seems like a good combo between an iPad and a Kindle.

The big question is what will the price be on this thing?

$250 or less and I'm all in.

Apple has to price it close enough to the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire so as to stop people from buying them but I know Apple also likes to make high profit margins on their products rather than breaking even or losing money per device sold like Google and Amazon are doing. We'll find out soon.

I see two very valid reasons for the iPad Mini:
1. to meet the introductory price points (or at least approach them) of the Google Nexus and Amazon. This would appeal to the educational sector and those who might buy a cheaper iPad for their kids, as well those who might want a second cheap iPad to throw in a bag/purse.

2. The second group, to which I belong, wants full fledged iPad but in a smaller 7" (or thereabouts) format. We are less price sensitive and would be prepared to pay in the $300 to $400 price range but we want a good screen and 4G capability. Otherwise what's the point?

The current rumours have the first group satisfied only. I hope the 2nd group gets some love.

Apple will be tripling down on secrecy next year, since just doubling failed miserably

I really think Apple intentionally leaks this stuff. They want people to know to stop consumers from buying the competitors product.

Someone in the market for a cheap tablet would be buying the Kindle Fire....but now they hear about the iPad Mini and wait for the reveal.

I don't think it matters... the iPod Touch and the iPad Mini are 2 different types of devices (even if the price is the same)

If you're looking for a pocket-sized multimedia player... you won't be buying a 7" tablet... and vice versa.

The new iPod Touch has a lot of stuff crammed into a tiny body. Miniaturization is a bitch. Plus it's 32GB and Retina.

I could totally see a 16GB 7.85" non-Retina iPad Mini selling for $299.

And then another $100 for the bigger iPad 2. And another $100 for the Retina iPad.

This. My 13 year old does not want an iTouch - he wants an iPad Mini for Christmas. That is the target audience for this, not people reading this post on an iPad today. There are a ton of people out there that have a phone and don't need an ITouch, and haven't been able to justify the money for a full size iPad. They will be smaller iPad 2s (with Lightening of course, and maybe a better rear camera), $300 for 16GB and they will sell out immediately. Even people who don't read tech blogs (95% of the population), including kids, know "iPad" is the gold standard, and won't see an extra $100 bill as a barrier to getting one vs. the competition.

Oh - and they will announce iMacs, but they will look the same with better processors and USB 3 inside. Cool - bot not exactly front page material. That is why the "rumors" have not been forthcoming

Ignorant haters.... far too many on this forum.

Do you think there are like LOTS of Apple haters here?

That would be pretty funny, actually. :D

People hate Apple so much they hang around Apple forums and do hate posts. What a life. :D It's probably a political thing if it's true, although I don't know, and I have a hard time believing something like that. Most likely it's just a bunch of malcontents.

The iPad Mini does not necessarily have to be expensive. If Apple is going to use the Sharp's IGZO-technology to produce the displays, it will mean practically similar productions costs.

Read here more about these costs: http://www.techsupportforum.com/4984-sharps-igzo-sees-light-at-ifa/

It means that you can get a smaller device with the A5X (maybe underclocked A6) processor and a nice Retina screen for the price of the iPad 2 or even cheaper. I would definitely buy such a device for my work and entertainment purposes.

For all the 100.000s who work in the manufacturing process only 1 is needed for a leak, and probably a bit of cash.

I wouldn't blame them if they did, working in that **** hole labour camp they call Foxconn. Take a some production samples and make a few quid. Good luck to them.

Having read much of this thread, it's hard to believe that some of you are bright enough to figure out how to use an iPad...or any other electronic device.

Between the elevation of Jobs to god status, the disbelief of what is clearly evidence of the iPad Mini and the continual whining about the lack of need for an iPad Mini...it takes your breath away.

It's coming. If you don't want it, don't buy it.

I agree with those who say pricing is going to be key with this. Other than that, there is little (ahem) reason to doubt an iPad mini being a huge success - Apple appears to be following a similar path to the iPod.

Price it right and this will be the biggest-selling iPad yet, IMHO.
