If it's the same bleeding 4 inch screen, I hope someone in the crowd yells out "BOOOO". I would if I were there. Guess I'll know if I'm coming out of pocket for a $700 Note 3 in a few hours.

Just found out today that the Note 3 can shoot 4k video, too. More and more I'm being pushed to getting my first Android phone.
You want a 6 inch device to shoot 4k videos then you're clearly not in the market for the iPhone.
Right now, there's still a lot of people who like their phone to fit in their pocket and have no use for limited 4K video shooting capabilities, and I, for one, I'm happy that I still have the choice to get a "smaller" device (I was perfectly fine with the iPhone 4's 3.5" screen).

I was over simplifying it and using an example of unlocking the phone. But it goes to passwords/access in general. If I have to fumble with it a few times or enter a password I will just as easily enter the password. I'm pretty curious how accurate/reliable a first gen smartphone fingerprint scanner is going to be. Not saying it isn't going to be useful in the future just will have to see it in action first. First thoughts are that right now it's kind of a gimmick that's all.

Guess we'll have to wait and see. I'm sure this will be a useful feature for people that lose their phones, as using a fingerprint could prevent someone from using it or from deleting everything on the phone.

Fingerprints as well as passwords ultimately end up as just a string of Os and 1s, and thus hackable. Unless some extremely nifty hack-proof technology is deployed, a brute force attack could unravel that false sense of security pretty rapidly.

you have no idea what you're talking about, do you? no, neither end up as a string of 0s and 1s (presumably in a database) to get hacked by brute force. that isn't how hacking works. 0s and 1s are at the binary level, the machine level. hacking happens much further downstream.

I don't see you laying awake at nite worrying about amazon passwords, so I don't know why you would here.

I think Apple could also expand this to the Mac. Imagine having an iPhone and a Mac. You get to a page where a Credit Card/login is required so click a button for AirLock (or whatever they decide to call this feature), an alert opens on your iPhone, you scan your fingerprint on the phone and BOOM, your Credit Card info/username and password is entered into the page.

New product?

I'd be very surprised if this turned out to be an iPhone/iPad update event. Apple's been under a lot of pressure to show it's still innovative and it seems to me that they're distracting us with these trivialities (color, fingerprint sensor, etc.) so we don't go digging for the real announcement. It's well known that WSJ is an informal PR channel for Apple.

Guess I'll have wait to see the fingerprint scanner in action, but personally I think it's kind of ringing like a "gimmick" to me. I really don't think entering a passcode or passwords are really that much of a pain in the butt and unless this thing is the most accurate scanner in the world and doesn't crap out on us (apple isn't the best with their home buttons) I'm sure I will still enter a simple 4 digit code to unlock my phone because it basically takes 3 seconds of my time. Which is pretty much muscle memory. Now if this thing scans fast, accurate and always works that would be cool but again not sure if it would get me off the iPhone 5.
What type of password are you using? If you are following recommended guidelines for a secure password it should be a pain entering it every time. And if you use PINs don't you feel uncomfortable using it in public when someone is behind you or nearby?

Any type of security can be overcome by a determined and skilled thief. The issue is finding the balance between making authentication as simple and convenient as possible while maintaining enough security to deter most criminals.

Just found a new high-res version of a picture of the supposed iPhone 5S box.

I hope the fingerprint scanner is more accurate than Siri. What happened to Siri development, it became an AppleTV hobby.

To unlock my phone just a pin. But my phone is never out of my sight. Never lost or misplaced one yet. Also really not that paranoid about it landing in the wrong hands. If found it's going to be wiped clean and used as new.

If someone wants something bad enough they will get it. I don't pretend to be in the sight lines of conspiracies and high tech theives who will need what's on my phone. And know I'm not important enough to even be a target. Small fish in a GIANT ocean. There are other easier ways to get my info which take a lot less effort then trying to crack in to my phone which is never out of my sight. We all know all this does is deter prying eyes of girlfriends/boyfriends not protect mission critical data/accounts of our million dollar accounts lol.

So what's the point? Are you an ax murderer? What do you care if your fingerprints are on file?.. I'd be more concerned with e-mail tracking, purchasing habits, things that define who you are. Fingerprints alone don't tell them anything about you.

Your finger print alone can potentially tell everything about you, if in the future, it is a common replacement for passwords in banking etc. the more places that store a file of your password encrypted or not, the more chance of identity theft. Even if the scanner requires the detection of body warmth and blood flow; the crooks can fool it. The word is it will be stored encrypted only in a separate chip from the CPU. So maybe NSA or others won't be data mining fingerprints right away?

I suspect the fingerprint scanner will tie into the new push Apple is launching to have a 1Password/LastPass type solution built right into the OS.

The pitch will probably sound like: "We all know how frustrating it can be to have to enter usernames and passwords on websites using an on-screen keyboard. Typos are commonplace. Well, we're going to change that with the iPhone 5S. Not only can you unlock your phone and authorize App Store purchases with your fingerprint, you can also automatically fill in usernames and passwords you've stored in the Keychain for any website you visit in Safari."

That's the kicker. I bet if they implement fingerprint authentication for websites, it will be compatible with Safari only.

I never said anything about hating 4.7 and 4.3 inch screens. You obviously missed my previous post where I called the Galaxy S4, and the Nexus 4 "decently" sized phone.

I didn't say anything about you hating anything. I was actually simply referring to the part of your post where you specifically said "I would like a phone that I can use with one hand and have it in my pocket with me hardly noticing its there. Samsung needs to know how big is too big."

Simply wanted to point out to you that the whole "anything bigger than an iPhone 5 won't fit in my pocket or can't be used with one hand" argument is a myth and quite frankly is getting old.

Meh, wake me up again when the iPhone comes with a nice size screen. The iPhone 5s is just more of the same with slightly better specs.

I'm sure Apple will take time to claim again how supposedly those big screens are inferior quality wise so why would anyone want one?

So, it's just a fingerprint instead of a master password. Solutions like 1Password and RoboForm are better in that they support multiple platforms (iOS, Max, Windows, Android etc.) It's likely that fingerprints scanner will become Siri's little (useless) brother.

waiting for tomorrow........................ and that countdown on the homepage isn't helping any..................

It's more difficult to revolt if you're repressed by a fascist government that have your fingerprints.

Good job apple!
