They must have realized that CurrentC was on the path to crash and burn, so came up with this last ditch effect to keep the concept alive.

It's interesting that their argument is that Apple Pay doesn't work with all phones so they had to do their own app. They could have accepted Android Pay too and gotten 99% of the smartphone market, but the fact they they didn't shows their argument to be disingenuous.

Not really. Android Pay doesn't work on every Android phone. It needs an NFC chip at the very least.

This is definitely more work for Walmart as they have to maintain apps on various platforms. Of course the data that they get to keep is well worth it for them.

Probably as much of a joke as Samsung pay is. The only two mobile payments that should exist are Android Pay and Apple Pay.

You would boycott a shop because they released an app treading on the toes of your beloved apple.. have you any idea how sad that is..
Would you tell someone in real life what you are doing.. I suspect not as they would look at you gone out...

No, not because they are treading on anyone's toes. But a business who feels they can ignore a popular payment option and release a proprietary option instead doesn't get my support. Wouldn't care so much if they also were looking to rollout Apple Pay, but Walmart has no intention of doing so.

And yes, I have no problems telling anyone that I won't shop at a specific retailer and my reasons for doing so. Walmart was already on my list for some bad professional interactions. Call it silly if you will, but I tend to support retailers who provide services and options meeting my needs and habits.

How is Samsung Pay a joke? It works on more terminals and has more features than Apple Pay (and Android Pay).

Why should there only be two? I don't think there should be dozens... but there's certainly room for several right now in its infancy. I am sure in the years to come there will be consolidation.

uh yeah except for its not easy because there are more steps required to pay and an app you need to download...Apple pay is great for its simplicity although I only have a 50% success rate so far at stores. One gave me a card error message on the terminal (so then I tapped the physical card and it worked fine) and the other kept saying to hold it near the reader even though it was on the reader and the reader was what made apple pay activate so I know it was in the right area. That problem was also just solved by tapping the actual card

Any store that accepts NFC payments of any kind should support Apple Pay, regardless if they advertise it or not. The terminal itself might be programmed to "not recognize it" but as far as most terminals go, anything that supports a NFC card of any kind will support Apple Pay.

There are reasons beyond "no Apple Pay logo" why it won't work as well:
- If it's not set to recognize Apple Pay, it may treat it as a NFC card and prevent using it over a preset limit, eg 20$ or 50$
- By design if you use NFC payments a lot, you are supposed to occasionally use the chip component to "prove you still have the card." Since they use single use nonce. If that nonce gets tripped then, the card is in a state of "I thought I was in the middle of a transaction" and wants the chip to be used to reset it. This is why if the terminal fails to read the card, you just insert the card. In the case of Apple Pay, you obviously can't insert the phone.

So as much as we all want to believe in having just a mobile phone and no wallet, the reality is we are still going to need ONE card, though that card could be made much smaller once swipe cards go away in the same fashion that SIM cards went from credit-card sized to "don't sneeze, you might lose it"

Yeah, I don't shop at Target anymore because of something similar. At the target's out here, to buy anything that requires you to be of a certain age (M movies/video games, Alcohol, certain over the counter drugs, etc.) they require that you not only show them your ID, but that you hand it over so that they can scan it. I was like HELL NO, and they refused to sell me the stuff. You want to check my ID, fine, however I am not giving you the right to scan all the info off my license. And oh yeah, because they got hacked and I had to change my cards.. Screw you target!
Want to make it worse? I worked at Walmart and some items required you to be 13 or 16 or older such as knives. It made me swipe an ID, I don't think many 13 year old kids have IDs, 16 year olds would only if they got their license.

You might want to try two things. 1) add another card to apple pay (even if you don't intend to keep it in apple pay) and see if that works. That'll let you know if the NFC chip in the phone is really working correctly, not just telling the reader it's nearby. And if that works 2) remove and re-add the card to Apple pay. The banks usually require a verification step after the card is added. Chase for example texts a code. If that step got bungled by the bank, the card will be in Apple Pay but not work right.

Okay, why does Apple allow this?

Just ban Current C and this app from the app store. If Walmart doesn't want to allow customer to use Apple Pay, why should Apple allow this app to be part of the app store?

Walmart takes chip card transactions anyways--only an idiot would use their stupid QR system.

Why does Apple let Walmart carry their products?

still dont get it, what is so awesome about apple pay? I am using nfc debit/credit cards for years, why should I tap phone instead of card near the reader? where is the benefit?

Maybe for you it wouldn't be useful. I love it because I don't have to have as fat of a wallet with all of my credit cards.

Why does Apple let Walmart carry their products?

Because Apple makes things and Walmart sells things. Walmart is the world's largest retailer. If someone is buying an Apple product at Walmart with cash, Apple Pay CurrentC, GooglePay, traveller's checks, layaway—Apple still gets the money.

Walmart today introduced its own mobile payments service called "Walmart Pay" built into its Walmart app on iOS and Android. The new Apple Pay competitor will roll out in select Walmart stores in the U.S. this month, followed by a nationwide launch within the first half of 2016.

Walmart Pay's QR code-based checkout process will involve opening the Walmart app, selecting Walmart Pay, activating the camera, scanning the code displayed at the register and waiting for the cashier to finish bagging your items. An electronic receipt will automatically be sent to the Walmart app.

The new payments solution will only work in Walmart stores and supports any major credit, debit, pre-paid or Walmart gift card. Walmart says that 22 million customers actively use its Walmart app each month, placing it among the top three retail apps in the App Store and Google Play.

Walmart is among a handful of retailers that have refused to support Apple Pay since its U.S. launch in October 2014. The retailer is instead one of over a dozen retailers committed to the Merchant Customer Exchange (MCX) consortium and its yet-to-launch rival payments service CurrentC.

Walmart's future plans to support Apple Pay or CurrentC remain undisclosed, but the company's senior vice president of services Daniel Eckert said Walmart Pay allows "for integration of other mobile wallets in the future."Walmart App is free on the App Store for iPhone and Apple Watch.
