I could see it going either way. The interesting thing about this Watch event is how different it is from a normal Apple announcement. They've had to link in all sorts of other advertising such as the pop-up stores and magazine coverage, showing the involvement of a whole lot of new people used to jewellery/fashion and that kind of thing.

There will presumably be a stack of journos and other invited guests at this event who would never have gone to a normal Apple do. And so it will probably be run quite differently.

On the one hand, you could easily argue that that would be a reason not to show any "tech" stuff and concentrate entirely on the Watch.

On the other hand, if you have a stack of fashion types listening, maybe it wouldn't be a dumb idea to show a sexy new laptop and see whether you can tag that on to the back of the buzz about the watch...

But which hand is the minute hand?

I really want a 15" rMBA. Regardless, I'm still getting a rmba whatever size when they drop.

It is called MacBook Pro. Apple is not going to release a cheaper 15". Nor a 15" even thinner and with a slower processor. A retina 15" screen must be powered by a somewhat powerful video card, and battery size must be in accordance. Therefore, it cannot be lighter, thinner or cheaper than it already is. At least that is my impression.

From what I understand, the size of the screen doesn't have anything to do with it, its the resolution. I'm not familiar enough with the Core-M to know if it could drive the 15" rMBP's screen with ease. I think they wouldn't release one for a different reason: The Macbook Air is all about portability. A 15" isn't that portable, no matter how thin. People are complaining that the rMBA's performance is going to be further limited. It's a computer built with its main focus on portability. Maybe, if anything, they'd put a 14" into something with the footprint of the 13" MBA, but I doubt it.

I'll take a non-retina IPS 15" MBA.
I disagree that a 15" MBA isn't portable. I can carry around my 13" with one hand because it's thin and light. The taper makes a big difference to me also. I don't think the footprint of the machine would affect that. I can also slip it into my backpack easily because it's thin and have extra space on the sides in my relatively small backpack for a 15" laptop.

Yes, it's resolution. But a 15" rMBA would have to have a high resolution in order to qualify as "retina". And a high resolution could only be driven by a somewhat powerful video card, and that would require more battery. More battery would equal to a thicker frame. And there you go: the current 15" rMBP.

Of course, if Apple would release a non-retina 15" MBA, then it could use a less powerful video card, and even one integrated with a Core M processor. But I doubt Apple will do that.

To be fair the current generation of integrated graphics cards are plenty powerful enough to drive retina displays and others.

No issue with those at all not on my macs nor on my surface pro.

Is anybody really expecting Apple to unveil the retina 12-inch Air in the event next week?

You mean 2 days? Yeah, I think so. They are going to announce it, update the non-Retinas as well, and then take 10-15min on the new Photos App on 10.10.3 - this is all going to be the build up before they do the meat of the show, the Apple Watch, rounded off with a nice hands on session for the Watch to wrap it up.

The main reason I think this is because they will be spending time on the Photos app, so they need to talk about OS X. This means they need to talk about Macs so the can talk about OS X.

A 15" screen will never be an "Air." It may be a light weight Pro, but the size negates it meeting the "air" requirement of full portability.

How soon it is forgotten the first "air" was introduced from and envelope by Jobs. A 15" screen kind of fails in the vision of Jobs.

That's what I think will happen as well.

OK, I'll play. Here's my guess based on the rumors so far:

11" and 13" Broadwell on Monday.

12" rMBA and 11" and/or 13" Skylake after WWDC or later.

Apple could release the 12-inch rMBA on Monday with a Broadwell processor, and update it with a Skylake processor when it is released, during the second half of 2015. Timing would be right.
