Apple could release the 12-inch rMBA on Monday with a Broadwell processor, and update it with a Skylake processor when it is released, during the second half of 2015. Timing would be right.

What about you, skaertus? Going to be buying?

In any event, we'll know in a little more than 24 hours!

I particularly want to see how Apple fits the 12" rMBA into the existing product range, especially whether it replaces the 11" because of size or the 11" stays because of price or possibly even computing ability (depending on how the 12" is built).

It just seems to me that if Apple were to release the new 12" MBA tomorrow we would have seen some leaked parts or pictures. We've seen nothing. When was the last time Apple released a new product where there was not any leaked pictures of the device?

Right. I can see the rMBA fit in between the iPad and the current mba's.
As an iPad on osx with attached keyboard, minimal ports, light, thin, small, ultraportable but not as powerful as the 11" or 13" or rMBP that within a year or so will merge into one rMB.
That would fit my needs perfectly so this is probably wishful thinking...

Yes, and expanding that a little: think ahead six months when there is an rMBA and an iPad Pro, both with ~12" retina displays. The iPP has (optionally) a cell radio. The rMBA has a built-in keyboard and the OS X file system. Things could get very interesting.

It depends on what comes out. I don't think I would buy a 12-inch retina Air at this point. I would prefer to wait for Skylake to see what happens. I already own a 15-inch retina Pro that I bought in 2013 and it is still good enough (although I wish it was smaller).

There have been leaked pictures of the display like a month ago.

I'm kind of in the same position, I have the 13" rMBP. But I'm pretty sure I'm going to "downgrade" to the 12" rMBA if it gets announced tomorrow.

Well, I am definitely not. Apart from everything else, the exchange rate here in Brazil is very bad for buying products in US dollars these days.

Yeah, I remember seeing that. I was in Australia until recently, so I definitely wouldn't be buying if I was still there. I just don't really use the "Pro" capabilities of my rMBP, and I travel heavily with my laptop. My only concerns are the RAM/storage upgrades, that's one thing I'll definitely have to sacrifice on. But I'm willing to do that.

I'm thinking the same thing - Broadwell has been so ridiculously delayed that waiting 6 months or so for the new architecture makes sense to me.

Considering the HUGE battery life advantage that came with Haswell, I feel a new architecture and 14nm gives a much better chance of a well-rounded machine than the Haswell die shrink. This is particularly true if it uses a Core M chip (which I believe is necessary if they want the design to be truly revolutionary), in which case I just don't think Broadwell will cut it (see: Yoga Pro 3). Plus, with Skylake there's a cat in hells chance of DDR4 RAM.

It's for these reasons that I believe everyone will be sorely disappointed tomorrow, either because of no Mac updates or a Broadwell "current design" MBA. However, if I'm wrong and they do release a Broadwell retina Air, I think I'll reluctantly pass and wait for Skylake, either in rMBA or rMBP form, depending on rMBA reviews.

I will upgrade this year though - I've had this MB 3,1 for nearly 7.5 years and I'm tired of missing out on new features.

Yeah. Apple has waited so much to release the new Air, why not wait another 6 months?

However, if there is any chance Intel is going to delay Skylake, then a launch at this point could be a good idea.

I'm pretty much thinking the same right now. I have a mid 2012 rmbp which I maxed out to make it last a few years. But times change and I wish I had something smaller I could take to work or even to rehearsals with my band. So I'm thinking a mba. If Apple bought out a rMBA I'd definitely go with one as long as we get at least 8-16GB RAM as standard and hopefully a bigger SSD drive. It would be awesome if Apple made a 512gb SSD as their base model. Here's hoping anyway lol

My take on today. Apple NEEDS to sell watches. Show starts with great numbers stuff, than 12" rMBA (in gold of course for you playa's - than all current Laptops get Broadwell and a price shuffle. Then watch stuff and IOS discussion on what new to make watch work with your phone.

Pardon me but you are insane. 512gb ssd in BASE MODEL? Seriously?? rMBA is supposed to be less powerful than standard MBA, not to mention the tight pricing it needs to sit in. Do you even know how expensive ultra small PCI-E 512GB SSD is? And if it's for base model the top of the line should be like what, 1TB SSD? yeah, right, lol.

Yes I do and no I'm not mad lol. Nowadays things like that should be less expensive. Don't you agree? How long has it been since you could have a 512gb SSD in an air? quite a while now surely? it should be made more affordable considering the amount of space files and programs use. I say why not? we pay enough for these mac's don't we? Our cash should go a lot further considering the product and this is Apple after all.

Since 2013 apple has been using one of the kind very small and fast PCI-E SSD drives in MBAs. You can't even get 3rd party replacements as far as I can tell, so the prices of them are not gonna drop significantly anytime soon.

I'm sure it's something that will eventually come down in price. Over here in the UK its an extra £240 for a 512gb drive. Ok so what if it was 256gb as a base model and then you had options for a 512gb and then a 1TB. How much are we talking for a say a 1TB version? I'm guessing a lot then?

I'm pretty sure the base model of the rMBA will be 128GB. Then there will be a higher spec model with 256GB. Then BTO options for 512GB and 1TB.

The pricing will come with the usual Apple tax and there will be no surprises as far as storage is concerned.

RAM I can see being 8GB across the range though, which if it happens will be a potential money saver for the consumer.

That would be a good selection if it happens. I think everyone would be really happy with those options.

I'd be quite amazed if 1TB became a BTO option. I'd love it, though!

I'm also confident the base unit will only have 4 GB of RAM. I just hope I can upgrade to 16GB (I doubt that will happen).

I think you're right about that but it would be nice to see 8GB on the base model and BTO of 16GB.

I'd be floored if we could get 16GB RAM/1TB SSD on the rMBA, but I don't see that happening. If anything, we'll get a 1TB option.

Those who are expecting the new rMBA announced at March 9th Watch event are setting themselves up for a disappointment. It's not going to happen.

At this point - I expect rMBA to be announced at WWDC.

So affirmative... and so wrong!
