We tried it for a few months and then canceled it. Now we can't access 13 years of over 1500 songs that we have either purchased from iTunes or copied from CDs that we had purchased but no longer own. You can still see all your songs but when you try to play them you get message “The song “X” could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?” When you try to locate it, it is no where to be found. On phone with apple for over 6 hour with no success. Apple's answer: "sorry"

Not Apple musics fault you didn’t have a proper backup. Music is stored in the cloud. But it’s up to you to make a back up of your owned music.

This has been a long known issue. The iTunes purchased ones should be able to be recovered, but any music from other sources could be gone forever.

Apple Support had a crap load of tickets about this issue a few months after Apple Music launched.

I am surprised that the issue has not been fixed yet.

All you need to do is re-subscribe to Apple Music for another month, and make sure all your content is downloaded before your subscription expires.

(I'm surprised support didn't just comp you a month to let you do this.)

The issue was that some tracks that you originally owned were incorrectly being identified as tracks that you didn't own (i.e. that you listened to via your Apple Music subscription), and hence when your subscription expired you could no longer play them. This issue was fixed back in 2015.

Once again not if you have a proper backup.
