Luckily this only applies to transfer “From Another iPhone” scenario. I wonder how many people transfer their data this way? I personally still do it the “hard” way by making an encrypted computer backup first and then loading it onto a new device.
Does it have to be encrypted the backup? I don’t like to use encrypted option. TIA

Back on topic...for anyone who has actually done this today - what was the exact procedure you did?

Epic fail from Apple, I remember I had a similar problem during my iPhone 14 Pro setup. How do I trigger the update during the setup process? My phone will arrive in a few hours.

Edit: Seems like it prompts you to update automatically during setup, fail averted!

Pretty sure it always checked for updates, as this is standard practice because it is not at all uncommon for software installers to make sure they have the latest version before running because of exactly this kind of thing.

On another note, remember when the ONLY way to set up an iPhone was to plug it into “a computer”? How far we have come that this now sounds strange and is only done when something has gone terribly wrong.

Let's use a little perspective here... I bought a cheap Windows 11 laptop for my HOA's office. I'd guess it had been on the shelf for a month or two. When it did it's initial boot, it had "97 required Windows Updates that must be installed prior to continuing" LOL, so it could always be worse ;-)

It asked me to update to 7.0.2. It took about 2 minutes to download and apply. No problems here. I’m not restoring from a backup, as I’m setting up as new.
Some if I am restoring from back up I need to set up as new first, do the update then reset and start over?

I think people are upset not that there is an update, but that the issue is particularly bad. This isn't a hypothetical vulnerability or a UI glitch.

I know for myself the Apple apologetic posts also get annoying. (I'm not talking about your post) Yes things are more complex now, but Apple's software is particularly buggy, and they control their own ecosystem so it seems less excusable. And perhaps things don't need to be as complicated as they are, perhaps some of the software we are using could do with a ground up overhaul. Complacency doesn't nurture progress.

If you‘re restoring from a backup, it’s going to request updating to 17.0.2. Once done with that, it’s going to ask the typical questions when setting up for the first time. It’s going to ask whether you want to set up without restoring from iCloud or iTunes. It’s a personal preference where you want to restore from.

No, it does not, however then some of your information will not be saved and you will need to re-enter quite a few passwords once your new device is set up.

More info here:

Amen.
Do as our man John Gruber says and utilize device-to-device transfer (which he reminded of today, then commented on this very article with the warning but still recommending d-to-d transfer). It’s been great for me each year.

Isn't this the norm that you can't transfer to an iPhone with a lower version? At least they let you upgrade during transfer now. I remember the one year when a last minute iOS update but the new ones didn't get it. I had to set the new one up as new, update iOS, restore, and set it again using the transfer

People acting like this is a big deal are so dramatic. Just update your phone on the white pages and problem solved.

Also do that many people really rely on iPhone to iPhone transfer? Why wouldn't you use iCloud?
I thought at least at one time, settings didn't transfer using iCloud. Or did they change thar lately?

I'm glad I saw this article before digging into my phone later today. Delivery is anticipated.
I haven't decided about transferring from my old phone or setting up as new, but will likely transfer since there's so much stuff to set up otherwise.

I set up as new and just transferred my pics, text messages, call log, etc. I’m redownloading all of my apps, and keeping the ones I use.

Restoring from an iCloud backup restores your phone 99% identically to your old phone, its been this way for as long as I can remember.

Simply signing into iCloud will only restore your iCloud settings, but no other settings.

In the end rather than set up from an previous device, I backed up my old phone to the minute then used the backup. It was on iOS 17 the whole time. When that finishes, I'll update to 17.02.

Although it was stuck when I tried that so perhaps I won't even attempt it. I now have a working phone... I think.

Yeah, but I have a lot of apps that I use frequently, and even the ones that I don't use all that often I still want to keep. I've got 242 apps on my phone according to the About section in the general settings, so I don't want to have to download each one by hand again. Besides, I bought the 512GB version this time, so I may as well keep all the apps I've got. Have to use up all that space somehow.
