Just got my M1 MacBook Pro, and my results are quite the opposite: I tried to run a virtual machine on the M1 MacBook Pro and on the Intel 2020 MacBook Pro to compare the performance.

The intel one obliged and launched a VM in 14 seconds. The M1 asked me, “What’s a VM?” and before I could open my mouth to respond it laughed in my face and launched a screensaver picturing an obscene gesture.

M1 Mac is better than Intel “in every respect”?

Electric cars are garbage because they don’t support outdated tech like gasoline.

Typing on a 2020 MBP that's 4 months old, bought after the refresh (Magic Keyboard and double storage) thinking I was safe as the 14" didn't seem likely. Then the M1 comes along. Spoke to Apple to plead my case and they offered me £780 but I can get more on eBay so will be going down that route so I can get a new M1 MBP.
Be careful though: Some expect Mini-LED machines and/or 14" / 16" machines. We don't know of course, but its entirely possible the just introduced M1 Macbooks are just intermediary devices replaced again soon.
Plus its the first iteration of Apple Silicon, more chips featuring faster CPUs, GPUs, more Thunderbolt lanes etc upcoming. I guess what I'm trying to say: choose wisely; depending on your needs it might be a good idea to wait before pulling the trigger on an ASi machine

But does it support 2 displays 😏and a external GPU. My 13in MacBook Pro 2019 is still a beast and i refuse to believe its obsolete.
It's not obsolete, no one said that. If it was working OK for you before, the introduction of the new M1 powered MBP does not change that.
What everyone is pointing out though is that the new machines are way faster and a lot more power efficient.

So just how much faster is the base model Air Intel (2020) vs the base model Air M1 in regular everyday person usage? Safari, Mail, Messages, Photos, Music, Etc.?

I don't do anything intensive so I just want to know if it's worth the upgrade from my only 6 month old Intel Air to get the M1 or maybe just wait for 2021 and see what the next gun brings and hopefully a 14" screen option?

You definitely don't 'need to upgrade.
I don't have an M1 mac, but my wife has a 2020 Intel MBA and it is blistering fast for everyday tasks such as those you are listing.

I know there is power to consider, obviously, but M1 is running at 3.2GHz while Intel is 1.4GHz, plus turbo. So it’s not surprising M1 outperforms.
Nah. Clock speed comparisons across completely different chip architectures are meaningless.

M1-to-Mx clock comparisons might be a little more interesting, but Apple is commoditizing these chips like they have done in the iOS devices... the chips aren’t going to be marketed on gHz, “turbo boost,” or amounts of cache. Hell, I’m surprised we get RAM choices. In any case, none of that is singularly why the Apple silicon is faster than Intel.

Watch my 2020 MBP connect to an eGPU and obliterate the M1 while connected to my Nikon, SSD and two external monitors at the same time like an actual professional device.

Awww.... too soon? Maybe they’ll get it right with the M2.
OK, where's the video?

ikr? Not to say, WAY...WAAAAAAY slower than any multi-billion dollar super computer. Maybe they will get it right with the M3000.

Not really a mid 2020 model though is it, it has the same 8th gen processor as the year before. They didn't change the processors they just slightly modified the SSD configs, for all intents and purposes the entry level 1.4ghz MacBook Pro was't updated for 18+ months.
Well, it is really the mid 2020 model though. It’s the version Apple were selling prior to the new m1 version, which is the point of this comparison. I get you’re upset that the chip is an older chip or whatever, great. Go search a specific chip comparison. This comparison is to compare models in apples line up.

Really impressive. Coming from someone who uses iPadOS, the M1 Air with Big Sur seems like it could be a computer that may bring me back to the Mac. Although I absolutely don't need to spend the money as my iPad Pro does everything great, I am very tempted.

In the video, he states near the end that the fan has not once kicked on. That's not true, I'm sure. Based on testing my own M1 MBP lately, the fan does come on, it's just so very quiet and barely moving any air that the back of the case feels like someone barely breathing on you. If you put your ear right up to the case you can barely hear the sound of the air moving. Amazingly, you don't really hear the fan bearings. They are amazingly silent under the faint whisper of the air.

But you will NEVER hear it at normal operating range no matter how hard you listen.

Yep, good points. It's just that the new model is double battery, performance, better mics and I'm keeping my MBPs for about 4-5 years so I'll be selling this, taking a c£150 hit and getting an M1.

I'm not "upset" - the entry level MacBook Pro didn't change in 2020, they just deleted the 128gb SSD option and made the 256gb the base model instead, exactly the same system. You don't pretend the iPhone is the latest model when last years removes a storage option and it goes down in price.

You didm' buy the 1.4ghz 13" MBP though did you?

But the test is comparing this model with the last. You’re complaining about a different issue.

Wanted to ask at the risk of asking a stupid question.. What would stop Apple from having an agreement to be allowed to use just say a "Nvidia" chip for extra graphics support? Can the system have two GPUs? or is it not really the point?

Completely agree with you because when you go off the grid (literally) you can’t bring four jerry cans filled with electricity with you to get you back out of the wilderness. Chances are it won’t be possible for decades to juice up your EV in the wilderness.

By the way, are you related to M1 that you operate in binary? It’s either amazing or it’s garbage for you. Recognizable fanboyism.

M1 is revolutionary, but it doesn’t replace Intel for every task for which people use Macs. In other words, it’s not “better in every respect” than Intel. It’s better in a lot of respects, but not in “every” one.

I bought an M1 MacBook for my 10-year-old son to continue with his online school, but I’m keeping my 2020 Intel MacBook Pro for work.

For all the people but..but..but'ing in this thread instead of doing that it's time to come up with an exit strategy not taking to the internet to complain. Apple committed to this in the summer, it's here, and it'll continue no matter the short comings you believe this change is bringing Apple is forcing you to crap or get of the pot.

I've been using Apple Macs since the Apple Macintosh Classic! Never looked back. I used Windows PC's proffesionally (and still do) and during the years there have been moments that the Mac was 'way' ahead of the competition, but then the competition caught up and overtook the Mac at times, particularly in the Intel transition, where the difference in performance didn't really warrant the huge price difference (except for having beautiful engineered computers etc) Today, I'm really excited about the future of the Mac once again. These new CPU's are incredibly promising , set the Mac's apart again and I can't wait until they are being rolled out in redesigned iMacs, and onwards! The only reason I'm holding on to my cash now is the knowledge that it will be coming next year, if it was longer away I'd probably end up buying one of the M1 Macs first!
