Strong middle-aged dad energy in these comments lol

I’m not a Kendrick fan particularly, but he’s clearly hugely popular and the show whilst not ground breaking was on par with most other half times. It was certainly very slick, Sam Jackson popping up perfectly in all the right places etc.

Anyway, nothing will ever top Prince’s appearance. It was perfect. I still watch it back every so often.

Watch an NFL game and listen to the music played in between plays. Rock music. Metallica, GNR, Ozzy, AC/DC. The last time a rock band headlined the halftime show was 15 years ago: The Who in 2010. I think it’s way past time for the halftime show to feature a rock (or country) act. In the case of Kendrick Lamar he performed in 2022 so why did he need to perform again three years later?

So this is the first time I've even looked at the Super Bowl thing. Being from the UK it's just not something we have even mostly heard of here.

It was so bad I put USA on my no fly list.

Look, I’m not a Kendrick fan, but he just won five Grammys last week. He’s one of the biggest rappers on the planet.

If niche means “people under 35”, then sure it was niche.
I don’t think that’s a coincidence. Clearly an industry insider thing. Doesn’t mean it makes for a great halftime show. As I said in another post the last time a rock band headlined was 15 years ago. Are the NFL and Apple really saying that there are no rock fans who watch football or the Super Bowl?

Load of Angry people here it seems. But y'know what. I've no idea who any of them were apart from Sam Jackson.

Nor any of the American Handballers. Football. There are hardly any feet involved and they just seem to come out sporadically to be laughed at because they are tiny.

What little I saw was complete garbage. Until the NFL dumps Goodall and disassociates with Jay Z, we are doomed for garbage hip hop and R&B half time shows.

I saw someone calling Prince's halftime show the greatest ever and I went to watch it but it was just good, not excellent. Beyonce's halftime show is still the best in my opinion.
But Beyonce didn't perform in the pouring rain now did she...easy to be on top when your husband buys the awards...

If you missed the Apple Music Halftime Show during Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans tonight, or simply want to rewatch it, a video of the full performance is now available for playback on the NFL's official YouTube channel.

We would have embedded the video here, but the NFL is not allowing that right now, so use the direct link to watch it on YouTube.

This year's Apple Music Halftime Show featured hip-hop artist Kendrick Lamar. Other stars who appeared on stage alongside Lamar included singer SZA, DJ Mustard, former professional tennis player Serena Williams, and actor Samuel L. Jackson.

Why would anyone want to watch that abomination again?

Hip hop has been mainstream for 30 years, there was never a time when the Beatles were viewed like this.
There was definitely a time where the Beatles were disliked by establishment types (think, the parents of the kids who were selling out their concerts).

There's a huge contingent of people whose musical interests stopped evolving when they got out of high school or college. And anything after that time period falls for them somewhere between "they're doing it all wrong" and "well, that's not really music".

And what is the average age of the members of Metallica, GNR, Ozzy, and AC/DC, these days. Can any of them be considered to really be in their prime now, musically, putting out solid new hits, or are they just inhabiting the nostalgia rock concert circuit these days? Funny you should mention The Who - who had a famous lyric about "hope I die before I get old". I remember going to one of their "last ever" tours - back in the 80's.

Is it so wrong to wish for some rock music at the Super Bowl?
You just got done saying that that music is being played constantly at football games. But now you seem to think it's absent. Which is it?

100% agree with the rest of your comment, but on this one bit... you must be new here? A large contingent of the crowd here is very excited to let you know that they don't like various artists (especially female artists, for some reason), when there's any mention of them in at article - even when it's legit coverage of Apple business, like Apple TV+ releasing a Billie Eilish special a while back. Like, the article wasn't "do you like this kind of music?", it was "Apple TV+ is doing this thing" (being reported a site that you go out of your way to visit to hear about things Apple is doing). She's not the only one - just the first example that comes to mind - it's come up lots of times over the years.

There are lots of people here who are very concerned that you might not know that they do or do not like a particular artist or performance, and feel the need to inform you.
It's the most predictable and sad aspect of this forum. Lots of dweebs smelling their own farts and lacking any self awareness. I love it.

The halftime show is about drawing in an audience. Die hard football fans are gonna tune in no matter who is doing it. Kendrick Lamar had arguably the biggest hit record in the last 12 months - it’s got like 250 million views on youtube. He literally has billions of plays on spotify.

Besides which, the suggestion that all die hard football fans are rock and country lovers is just not true! Rock bands just aren’t as popular with the kids as they used to be, that’s all.

That said I’m sure guitar music will get a turn again soon enough, the NFL know that it’s important to be inclusive 🙂

We cancelled cable TV six years ago, so we will watch later sometime this week. The comments here are reflecting the flavor of comments on Twitter, more and more.

My point was, the general view of hip hop now is not what it was in the 1990’s when it actually was viewed with the same adoration / indignation dichotomy that the Beatles were viewed with in their early success. I think the comment I was responding to was describing the situation in the mid 1990’s, early 2000’s, when hip hop was breaking into the mainstream and making mainstream adapt to it, not today. I mean, Snoop Dogg was at Trump’s inauguration, which should tell you exactly how establishment-friendly hip hop has become. Lamarr doing the HS is just another way of saying hip hop is the dad music of today.

Hip hop is coming down from a long period of being the foremost genre of pop music. The Beatles went from being the biggest band ever to being a classic rock legend without passing through all the stages rock n’ roll music as a genre did. They were the ones who brought rock out of the 60’s and made it evolve and then quit before they could slowly fizzle out.

It's always interesting how many people feel the need to go out of their way to let the world know they didn't enjoy a half-time show, and even more interesting how predominant this is when the performer is... doing hip-hop.

If it's not your cup of tea, it's not your cup of tea. Calling it "not real music" shows your true colors.
