It has a military aesthetic. If you have blue hair you won't like it.

I can’t say I see any aspect in its aesthetics that looks military if I’m honest. When I think of brands like CWC, Smiths, Casio and Rolex who have all produced watches for the armed forces, I can’t see any inspiration with the Ultra personally.

I love this thing! I’ve wanted a more rugged watch and one that’s more in keeping with traditional watches for a long time. So for me, the design is spot on.

It also appears as though to compensate for the larger casing they’ve made the new bands smaller, with 3 sizes of Alpine and the smaller Trail loop also being smaller than the current Sport loop. So that may offset how it sits on smaller wrists a little. You can already see in some videos the Trail loop folds back flatter on itself than the Sports loop, reducing that puffed out loop section.

But to each their own. This watch is designed as a new addition to the lineup, not a replacement. Design is always personal preference. I’ve been an Apple Watch wearer since the S3 but suddenly the regular design feels very bland and old fashioned to me, and with ceramic S5, graphite S6 and Hermes S6, that’s a bloody pain!

Very excited for mine to arrive!

Edited to remove talk of bezels. I was mixing up comments about the body size.

It seems to me that it is more military wannabe, like those armed dicks who call themselves patriots, than real military, which perhaps needs a serious tool and not such a joke.

No absolutely not. But... Really?

A car can look good, but can a bus?

A bus can do things a car can't, but that don't make it pretty.

He was one of the great 20th century style icons. I guess you must have nearly been on that list, too. lol
We have mentally ill, homeless people here with the same fingerspitzgeful fashion statements…

Who said pretty though? The discussion is around the aesthetic in general, I’m not sure many people would argue that it’s pretty? You want pretty you’ve still got the SS 8 which is the same as my SS 4 and now feels stale to me. This is a new design that’s chunkier with a new aesthetic which is to my taste because it’s different.

They should have added the additional battery life to the 8…overall it felt like 8 didn’t get any love and apple only worked on developing the ultra.
I expect the Apple Watch 9 get a bit more love and maybe additional mic integration and maybe the addition to a new function button.

It is a bit of a kick in the teeth for Apple Watch users must definitely. Battery life has been a major complaint for the past 2 years since they introduced AOD, yet they improve it just on the Ultra which is a watch that appeals to fewer people. The series 8 is so mediocre, I’m considering a series 7 as my upgrade instead. Apple even had the cheek to hike the price £40 on the base AW this year! I can get an S7 for £329 and it’s essentially the same watch, but won’t tell me when I’m ovulating. Gutted

Where is the S7 £329? I think I'm going to get an S7 instead of S8/Ultra.

The Ultra is noticeably thicker than the AW8 though. I’m not sure how they could have improved the battery life in without going much larger.

My understanding is that you can get much better battery life by turning off the AOD, which I plan to do on the Ultra I ordered anyway.

I saw it on Google shopping, a company called Miagadget but I’d probably pay a bit more to get it from a reputable retailer. There are plenty of retailers now selling it for between £315 and £349 today.
Apple Refurb have them for £309 41mm and £339 45mm which seem to be the cheapest, Amazon is like £40+ more per model.

I think a big factor in the overall design is its suitability for diving. Think underwater wearing neoprene gloves. The buttons need to be bigger and the user needs to be able to feel for them without looking too closely. In fact, that is a general design consideration, if you’re running/cycling/swimming. Plus, by moving them outboard, it frees up more interior space for a bigger battery.
The screenshots of water activities from the Apple Event show the Apple Watch Ultra in "water mode" with the water drop icon. So it makes sense to have physical buttons and an easier to use crown to be able to interact with AW reliably under water.

‘Until battery technology leaps forward it would be hard to give the 8 users more battery without making the case larger. I am pretty sure Apple has it maxed out and it using ever tiny spot in the 8.

Also the Oceanic+ app for Apple Watch Ultra will require a subscription when it is launched later this fall, when used as a full scuba dive computer. Most other functions are free.

They could have released with a faster and more power efficient processor, the S8 is essentially rocking the one from the 6. Even an extra couple of hours on the stated battery life would have been something.
