Edit: Crap! I have to take a lot of what I said below back! I just tried it and Apple still messed up with Now Playing! It DOESNT act like an app at all... you can't even double-tap the crown to switch back to it! Damn it!

This is only for Spotify and all 3rd party music subscription services. For Apple Music users you can switch back and forth between work out and music control very easily, using method @friedmud suggested: Double click the Crown.
You're using it like this. Beginning by launching Music app. Play your favourite running music. Make sure the screen is at Now Playing. Hit the Side button for Dock then launching Work Out. Now when you run and want to control music just double pressing the Crown it'll bring you back to music control. Double pressing the Crown again will bring you back to Work Out. Tested it. Works great.
(Don't launch your work out from Complication because double pressing the Crown will bring you back to that watch face)
When you finish your run and your fingers are too slippery, just press the Crown and Side button at the same time it will pause your work out. Proceed to dry your hands and end your work out.

Oh.. and I also get my favourite work out screen back. Good job Apple!

I will say that because of Watch OS 3, I personally am not going to get the new watch at all. I feel like my watch is perfectly fast enough for what I use it for. Plus, I can't wait for the series 3 watch. It will probably be even more truly amazing

Yes...I'm finding that if I'm waiting for much of anything it's the app's fault. Fortunately my favorite apps are mostly working fine. Fantastical 2 was really fast on Watch OS2, but it was actually slower to update on OS3 even as a docked app. They just released an update that improved the speed quite a bit.

I'm going to take the same approach that I have used when upgrading my iPhones: Use it until it breaks or gets slow enough to bother me. AppleCare+ for my Series 0 aluminum Sport will run out in July, 2017, so if anything happens to it after that I will be upgrading. Heck, even if something happens to it between now and then I might consider upgrading rather than paying the $79 to have it replaced under AppleCare.

I feel the same way. I have the Apple Care and I plan to cash it in because I have tons of scratches on the screen and it bugs the hell out of me. I am also toying wit the idea that Apple may send me a Series 1 updated wit the Dual Core That is in the updated version. If not, I will still be okay! Here's to hoping! Cheers!

I 100% agree with you! The swipe right gesture would have been so much better to switch between apps. Hope we'll see it in the future.
This scenario always bothers me: I'm running, have the activity app open then quickly want to go to currently playing music. The moment I have to start pushing buttons it does distract me too much from looking at the road. Especially since the two times press of the crown doesn't work reliably for me to switch between the music and the running app, even though I accessed them a number of times back and forth via the dock. Instead it sometimes just takes me to a random 3rd app next to the activity app.

I imagine this wouldn't work as some apps might want to use edge gestures for their own functionality. Apple can make sure no watch faces do this. Maybe a force touch edge swipe could be used (like on iPhone), but that is a lot of effort compared to the button. You also can swipe fast to the end of the list if you're navigating one app at a time.

Any experience about the battery life? I am concerned that it's down quite a bit.

I had those concerns too. I've had WatchOS 3 on my Sport (38) for about 36 hours. I turned off all background refresh, put only a few stock apps in the dock, and am only using a few stock complications. So far I haven't seen a big difference in battery life compared to 2.2.2. I'll start adding complications and apps to the dock over the next few days to see if those have any impact, but so far I'm satisfied that WatchOS 3 is about the same as 2 on my watch.

(I should note that I have restarted the watch and my iPhone twice in 36 hours and I've read that restarting both can take care of battery-drain issues. I usually do restarts before charging overnight anyway as I've found that, in general, battery life on the watch isn't as good if it hasn't been restarted within two or three days.)

I've had mine on for a comparable amount of time today and down to about 28%, I use omnifocus a fair bit on it and the netatmo welcome app a small amount. I've done 30 mins of exercise. So far the battery life is comparable for me.
