Well aint that just brilliant. My estimated replacement delivery date has now been pushed back by more than a week.

My replacement is supposed to arrive today, but the tracking is a mess. Showed Houston arrival, but now back in Memphis. Assuming it is a Fedex error.

I just called Apple to find out why my replacement date had slipped. No explanation but they said they would restore it back to its original shipping date!!! Why move it in the first place?o_O

Weird. Still can't believe we have to get replacements watches for this, but oh well.

My replacement is still scheduled for today.

It would be nice to get an update from Apple on what went wrong and how they're preventing it from happening again. They've pulled the update and gone totally silent on the issue.

Yeah, somewhat surprised they haven't said anything, but that would just bring attention to the matter on earnings day. So expensive lesson having to replace most likely quite a few watches.

Be interested to see if its a specific version, or a specific phone that's caused the update to brick the watches, mine went fine luckily, but there must be something in common with the failed ones.

I will be New To You with a fresh serial number and case.

Actually.... shiny new INNARDS.... it's the case they reuse if it's refurbished.

Their problem description reads: systemwide error - frozen - Apple Logo. I never used this language, particularly “frozen”, so I’m guessing this is how they are describing it internally. Unless you have AppleCare+ (with its expedited replacement), this is probably the method a majority of these bricked watches will get fixed.

I have apple care + and this is the description for my replacement, too

Well, my “Express Replacement” didn’t go according to the way Apple said it would.

On Tuesday I called spoke to a senior advisor who apologized profusely for my S4 getting bricked, and told me he set up an Express Replacement. He said I would be getting 2 emails, 1 for sending in the bad watch and another for putting in my credit card info to get the replacement. The second one for the Express Replacement never came.

I called back yesterday, spoke to a second senior advisor who apologized profusely for the first advisor setting it up wrong, and did it again. She said she would call me back in a few to make sure I got it. You already know what’s coming...no second email, and no phone call back.

I called this morning and spoke to a 3rd senior advisor, who profusely apologized for the fact that the two prior senior advisors had bad information, and that I am not eligible for an Express Replacement unless I purchase AC+. I asked for her supervisor and she refused, saying she is the supervisor and that this is Apple’s official position.

I am pissed beyond belief. I can easily afford the AC+, but I’m not interested in being extorted by Apple to more quickly repair damage that they caused.

My replacement was shipped yesterday, received today, setting it up now. I received a new one not white box refurb, did do the credit card hold, doesn't matter to me, but I can see how that would irk some people. I was worried about Cell plan being transferred all went well. Something else in my rear view mirror.

Mine is set to arrive today as well, how did you do the cell plan transfer? Curious since I can't do anything on the old watch.

People are also way more likely to report problems than successes. My SS S4 44mm LTE upgraded just fine to watchOS 5.1.

I'm only even reading this thread because I am curious what caused some to brick in the first place, but if I had to guess, this was probably only bricking 1% of devices or less.
I hope that's it's a lot less you know how much 1% is when you sell millions

For those getting replacements, what’s the procedure when your old watch is still shows up in the Watch app because you can’t unpair the broken one? When you add the new watch, does it ask if you want to restore from the old S4?

If the S4 was never unpaired, there will not be a backup.

Personally, I wouldn't want to restore a backup from a device that had a problem updating since we don't know why it was unable to update.

I would set it up as new. Hopefully you have "Health" turned on for iCloud sync on your phone.

i would have thought 5.1 would have been re-released by now. could it possible be out at any time either.. not the typical 10:00 am releases we normally see.

Not the news I was looking for, but thanks!

If you have Health sync on in iCloud, you will keep all your activity, ancheivements, and health data. It's just a matter of setting up your watch faces and installing any apps you want. I prefer to set up a new watch as "new" because I feel like it helps me avoid some issues that may carrier over from a backup.

When 5.1 came out I received the notice of the update on my phone. I waited to install and I am glad I did seeing all the issues the S4 is having. So this morning I get up and see on my phone a red notice bubble for my watch indicating that 5.1 was available - again. I decided once again to check here first but did not see anyone posting a re-release eval. I rechecked my phone and the update notice was gone - again.

Makes me wonder - did they re-release and pull it again? Did not all the update servers get the memo? Is apple messing with me? or us? Hum....

Sometimes the notification itself can get cached on servers between you and Apple, but when your device goes to look for the actual update it's not there.

I was traveling on Tuesday and had to wait to do updates until about 9:00 PM that night. Thankfully I checked MR prior to updating and by that time, the news of the 5.1 bricking issue was on the front page and had been pulled by apple. I’m one of those that updates as soon as it is released. I’m going to change that going forward. Just a few short years ago, these things just didn’t seem to happen, but I may be wrong.
