I checked my watch app after seeing this thread and it was already downloaded to my watch, and then it proceeded to start the update process without prompting me o_O

Edit I was able to delete it while it was in the preparing phase.

Updated my iPhoneX to 12.1 and then went for 5.1 on my AW4 GPS. Took a while and felt to be longer than past x.x updates. All came through fine.

If people are having issues, as usual, would be worth rebooting before attempting the firmware update.
I always reboot my phone and watch before installing an update. So far I have not had any issues with my AW4 and the 5.1 update

Definitely glad I didn't update my S4 last night. I know Apple pulled the update, but I'll give it some time once they re-release watchOS 5.1.

Okay three things:
(1) Is it only S4 AWs affected.
(2) I agree 5.1 doesn't seem any different.
(3) Any ideas why some S4s are bricked and others, like mine...40mm aluminium /Nike, are not?

my 40mm SS updated perfectly.... it was when I put my 40mm sport on the charger to update that all hell broke loose!

apple needs to have a way for an end user to put the watch into recovery mode to get it back up. iphone , ipad etc can do this. it would save them on problems like this where the end user can try a manual restore.

But I think Apple believes their own PR which is, "That it should just work." Of course, this has not been the case for years, everyone else knows about it, but Apple it seems. Now Mojave seems to have been much better, but like all things Apple, they seem to only be able to concentrate on one device/system software release at a time.

Really disappointed about Apple's current solution of waiting for them to ship me a box/send the watch back/wait an indeterminate amount of time for the replacement.

I was planning on getting AppleCare for this watch so I ended up buying that and then reopening my case with Apple Support and directly asked for an express replacement. They're shipping one out today and I could have it tomorrow.

Anyone's express replacement ship out yet? I am hoping for today, but email said could be a couple of days.

Will attempt to go to the Apple store when they open tomorrow at 10 am to start the replacement process. Has anyone considered buying another watch while waiting to get a replacement, then return it back in 14 days :)

Me. But my windows ends this Saturday. 14 days, right?

Apparently, the new brick emoji is the cause of this.

Joking aside, my S2 took about an hour to complete this X.1 update; I don’t think the 5.0 update took that long.

AW3 GPS Nike - took just short of 45 minutes to update from 5 to 5.1. Longest time for an update in quite a while. So far appears to be working fine.

Just a heads to those lucky enough to have an Apple store nearby with your model in stock: after bricking my S4 and reading here about the need to send it in for repair I headed to my local Apple store that happened to have my model in stock. They told me they would have to send it in and I politely refused saying this was no fault of my own. I (again very politely) asked to check with a supervisor, explained that I didn't deserve to be penalized by Apple's mistake, and he eventually agreed to give me a brand new watch as an exchange.

So if your local store has your model in stock, it's worth asking, you never know ;)

How did you manage that? My email says they'll ship it in a few days. Phone call to support got that same info.

Nope... my email says shipping in a few days

I just spoke again to Apple care:
1. This will not count towards any "incidents" on your Apple Care. This is considered a manufacturer's defect.
2. Apparently, on their end, it sounded like the shipment was already underway. I applied for it yesterday evening. YMMV.
Not sure if I trust the fact that they said it should arrive soon, but let's hope it's true. I am hoping for Friday.

Absolutely brutal. I'm glad I actually forgot about the updates yesterday, when I did last night...I saw my AW4 is "up to date." That's why I cam here. The phone I usually hold off a day or 2, (after a bad update a few years ago)

But I never had problems with AW updates so a fear wasn't there. Just glad my timing of attempting to update....after Apple pulling the update was in sync! If this bricked my 2 week old SS, I'd be super ticked right now!

Basically I'll simply wait 1-3 days before updating ALL Apple devices.

I am envious if you nr shipment is already underway as mine is a fresh order and will not be shipped until Apple receive my damaged watch at their returns depot.

Is anyone without AppleCare getting an express replacement? How did you fanagle that? I'm on the phone now and the person is just telling me the same line about sending it back and having it repaired.

Mine as well, but I have a package coming Fedex from Apple in my Fedex delivery manager now, so I assume that is it.

Thanks for that tip.... so do I and the IDIOTS sent it signature required. Do they think people don't work!? They didn't even send my SS watch signature required... now they send a replacement signature required!? IDIOTS!

That makes sense why I can't see it.

Glad I didn't grab it immediately! Wisdom has been telling me to wait one day after a software update comes out, yesterday just cemented that practice!

I had no luck on that - was planning to rely on luck for accidental damage and my credit card for extending the warranty, but apparently Apple has turned AppleCare+ into two tiers of warranty service, too. In the past what they're calling express replacement used to be available for all sorts of things (I did it with an iPod once).

I changed my address to work because of that - it's not really the days without it, but I'll have signature required for the empty box and the fixed Watch, so that just adds to the inconvenience.
