I had this happen with a beta release of 5.0 with my S2 Watch. Had to send it in for replacement. I've been running all the 5.1 betas on my new S4 Watch without incident. I have a new way to doing things though that may or may not be helping. I will first update my iPhone to current iOS build first. Once that is done, I will power cycle both the phone and watch. Let them sit for a few minutes. Then for the watch, it's on to the charger and I set my iPhone right next to it while it updates so there is no issue with BT/Wifi etc. Probably all overkill, but let me tell you it was misery waiting for my replacement watch when my S2 bricked. It has become a very important device that I depend on. Not mention being a Phx resident in the summer, I looked like a dork with tan line from the missing watch, lol.

My series 3 is having iMessage issues, will not show contact names in my messages after multiple resets, is anyone else having this issue? Minor issue compared to a bricked Apple Watch but an issue nonetheless...I thought Apple was supposed to be releasing more polished updates these days?

I received a brand new Apple Watch 4 today, set it up, and then went to update. It never left the charger stand and was stuck on the Apple logo for three hours.

I contacted Apple Support and they put me in the standard replacement track; ship a box to me, I send it in, they send me a new one. Could be a week to ten days.

You're within the return period, not sure if there is an Apple Store near you, I would just return it and get a new one.

My Apple Watch 3 took a while to install. At first it said two hours, but I think it actually took about 30 to 40 minutes.
The update didn't brick it.
Only S4 watches are affected by the bricking.

Wow - that really takes the excitement out of the 'new shiny' experience!
Indeed it does. It also sucks knowing that you waited probably a good 2 weeks to receive a paper weight and then having to wait another 10 days possibly.

Updated my iPhoneX to 12.1 and then went for 5.1 on my AW4 GPS. Took a while and felt to be longer than past x.x updates. All came through fine.

If people are having issues, as usual, would be worth rebooting before attempting the firmware update.

Same here. Started off saying 3 hours, 2 hours, and took about 40 mins. S3 GPS. Update didn't brick mine thankfully. lol.

Edit: oops... this only happens to S4. My bad.

I updated mine with no issues. S4.
Is my first Apple Watch.
Sorry if my question is so naive but, once updated I’m free of any kind of problems right?
Thanks in advance.

You should be although I don't know what sort of life you lead so I can't speak to problems that you might have in the future...

***UPDATE***

Don't want to get anyone's hopes up, but... in discussion with Apple Support:

Kimmie

We may not have to complete the repair because I did some research on this to see if it’s a known issue.

Kimmie

So what I will have to do is setup a callback with a phone advisor which will let you know the next steps

Dan

Alright? Can we leave the repair status as is in case I cannot fix it with the phone advisor?

Kimmie

That’s fine.
Waiting for the phone advisor to call... I'll keep you posted.

I guess I'm just lucky, none of these problems that people report have ever happened to me. Sometimes I wonder if they are just made up. It seems some people get hit with every single problem ever reported.

Won't help much but... that's exactly what just happened to me. UPS JUST delivered my new Series 4, bricked now after updating to 5.1...

Apple customer for 25 years. This is my first bricking, though I've dealt with other issues in the past with laptops, iMacs, and the first Watch.

It's not made up.

That's the same general process I followed. The advisor will walk you though a restart attempt before declaring the Watch dead. They'll then offer to send you a box to ship it back to them for replacement or you can schedule an appointment in a store.

I’ve downloaded the update to my phone but I have not installed it on the watch yet - is there a way to delete the update so it does not go to the watch?

You may have found your answer already but if not..
I was in exactly the same position as you - already initiated the update before seeing the bricking issue.
However it is possible to delete the download before it starts updating your watch.

If an update file has already been downloaded but not yet installed, then follow the steps here to remove it: On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > General > Usage > Software Update - delete the download. You may need to scroll down the page to see the delete option.

Follow the instructions carefully as I was originally looking in the wrong place and thus couldn't find a delete option.

Still kind of surprised that Apple has not bothered to pull the release...

I updated my S4 and no problems.

You have to update iOS first for it to pull the new corresponding Watch update. It has been this way since watchOS 1.0. You can’t update to watchOS 5.1 until you update to iOS 12.1.

It's not true. My watch app found the update for 5.1 before I updated to 12.1. I installed the 12.1 update first just to be safe.

Installed 12.1 on my XS Max and cannot answer incoming phone calls because the swipe to answer is unresponsive. I also have a Series 4 Watch and will not update until this is squared away.
