Updated to 12.1, started update to 5.1 on the Watch, then read this article... Bricked. S4 GPS 44 mm.

My SS SB S4 Cellular bricked. Thought it was a coincidence and scheduled a store visit. Then saw this thread and called back in and my technician said he hadn’t heard of any issues so I pointed him to this thread and told him to expect a ton of calls going forward if this keeps occurring. Express replacement on the way.

Mine is bricked as well. Had to send it off to be reset. Was quoted 3-5 days. It is amazing how naked my wrist feels.

That’ll teach me to update before reading the reviews. ‍♂️

Lucky I saw this thread. I downloaded the update, but deleted it before it installed. Hopefully they resolve this soon.

I thought mine was stuck (series 3) but I held the two buttons down and it opened to the watch face, running 5.1.

Add mine to the list (Series 4, 40mm GPS) - called in and went through the steps, shipping off for a repair. I was tempted to go to an Apple Store, but it sounded like they would've had to send it off (most Watches at my store are "pickup on Nov 20" or later).

I'm kind of surprised that we're almost 4 years into this and they don't have a way to DFU-mode Apple Watches at the store?

Just finished my update and then I saw this. My launch-day S4 aluminum was not affected. What a bummer for some people.

How did you remove it?

You may have found your answer already but if not..
I was in exactly the same position as you - already initiated the update before seeing the bricking issue.
However it is possible to delete the download before it starts updating your watch.

If an update file has already been downloaded but not yet installed, then follow the steps here to remove it: On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > General > Usage > Software Update - delete the download. You may need to scroll down the page to see the delete option.

Follow the instructions carefully as I was originally looking in the wrong place and thus couldn't find a delete option.

Still kind of surprised that Apple has not bothered to pull the release...

I’ve been staring at the apple logo for over an hour. Looks like my 44 Blk SS S4 is in trouble.

Sometimes store inventory doesn't match real inventory. Call your local store.

You have to update iOS first for it to pull the new corresponding Watch update. It has been this way since watchOS 1.0. You can’t update to watchOS 5.1 until you update to iOS 12.1.
I updated my S4 to 5.1 before updating my iPhone X to 12.1.
No issues so far.

Purchased during pre-order, delivered on 9/24. I'm outside the return window.
I pre-ordered from Apple online and got my 44mm Space Gray Series 4 LTE model on the 21st. Bricked by the update. Spent an hour on the phone getting nowhere. Went to my local Apple Store and they exchanged it for a brand new one. It has watchOS 5.0.1 and I'll be leaving it on that version until I hear more about this.

Bricked my Series 4 on phone with Apple now, asked questions put back on hold. Last guestion was have I deleted any Apple apps from phone or watch. Yes I have, back on hold now.
