Yea - same as OS/4 for session based applications like timers and workout and other apps considered session based apps. The settings under general for wake screen talks about this and a few options that are available. I think it defaults to “while in session”. When you do a workout, you probably want to raise your wrist and see your heartbeat and the workout. I like it for the timer as well.

I can’t remember if you have the timer as a complication if it will work the way you want or not.

The problem with watchOS 4 is that the OS overrides those settings for the stopwatch specifically.

Activity in OS 5 is very bad - nothing is done right - time, calories and especialy gps data is all messed up and recorded wrong.

I was thinking maybe it was ok to upgrade based on what I’d read u til now but that makes me think maybe I should hold off. What specifically is wrong? Is it just buggy so far?

So on the previous beta my Exercise minutes were way off. On this latest beta my Activity data seems pretty close to on the money. S3 LTE here.

Took my Series 2 off the charger at 08:00 AM, got a message about being below 10% at 12:30 PM. Rebooted and was back at 43% but it was dead at 14:00 PM... The Siri watch face is just blank with only the clock showing. BETA2 has been extremely buggy for me so far. One of the worst BETA releases for me on the Apple Watch since release and I have been on most BETA's.

The blank Siri watch face just started for me this morning. Also, the activity tracker is making no progress as the day goes on. I've been running the betas since day 1, and have not had this issue until this morning. Reboot does nothing, and I can't find any sort of cause. Anyone found a reason for this?

Had the same SIRI watch face problem. Hard reboot the iPhone then hard reboot the watch.

Inspired by "All the little things" threads that MacRumors has on different products and software
releases, I figured the WatchOS 5 deserves one too.

The Apple Watch has plenty of things that are not heavily featured in Apple's blog posts or articles, this thread will highlight those things for you!

watchOS 5 requires iPhone 5s or later with iOS 12 or later, and an Apple Watch Series 1, 2 or 3. watchOS 5 is not compatible with the first-generation Apple Watch.

Headlining features
  • Enhancements to Workout app, such as Hiking mode, Yoga and automatic workout detection with retroactive credit and End prompts!
  • Walkie-Talkie.
  • Invoke without saying Hey Siri when you raise your wrist.
  • Siri watch face support for Siri Shortcuts and third-parties.
  • Limited web content rendering for emails and links in Messages.
  • Podcasts app.
  • Background audio API for third party apps.
…And what we're here for:

Little Things
  • Siri watch face cards can be turned grey.
  • Control center items can be rearranged.
  • New subtle animation when entering control center or notifications.
  • Mail shows when it was last updated at the top of the inbox.
  • The rings in the activity app are outlined with black along the edges
  • Astronomy and Solar watch faces have been simplified and now support complications
  • You can now access Control Center and Notifications from within apps as well by touching and holding at the top or bottom of the screen, then swiping
  • WiFi supports WPA2 Enterprise.
  • Connect to WiFi networks from Watch.
  • The Timer app now has "Recents" to allow you to start a timer for the same duration you used previously
With the mail and messages Siri watch face data sources. What info will appear on watch face

I'm not seeing any indication that there is anything wrong with Activity tracking on watchOS 5 b2.

Seems to me like Activity tracking is always a question mark, and all people need is a tiny seed of doubt to start reporting problems with it.

It wasn’t working for me. I was getting dots and random lines that I didn’t go.

But after reinstalling using the ipsw file on my iPhone my route maps are back to normal as they were on watchOS 4.x.x. After my runs.

Can one of you take a screenshot of the yoga feature in the workout app? I am curious how it is different from yoga (via "other" workout type) in watchOS 4. Apple mentioned it in their keynote so I expect there to be something new and interesting about the yoga workout type...

I wouldn’t. I regret it, I’m never patient.

Battery life is awful, normally have 70% at the end of the day at midnight. Battery now at zero at 22:00. GPS for running is way off. Random resprings.

It’s terrible.

Having quite a mare updating to is 5.0 beta 2. Deleted and reinstalled beta profile a million times. But it keeps telling me I’m not conn eyed to internet when updating.

Anyone got any idea what I need todo.

Reset and re-pair worked for me, but the beta is terrible.

In the release notes, Apple notes that bugs related to workout metrics being counted/updated are now fixed, with the exception of swimming workouts.

They also say route maps during workouts may fail to be recorded and/or may not be complete and smooth.

It is not fixed on mine...any kind of workout. Recording the workouts is a mess and I have multiple times unpaired and paired the watch. SS3 LTE

Apologies if this has been mentioned before but I think the battery drain is due to the new WiFi option.

It’s on as default so therefore is always searching for WiFi. I turned it off and now have 83% after 10 hours. This time yesterday I had 22%.

If you turn WiFi off does that mean you can’t use WiFi at all when your phone is out of range?

I would think so, but personally for me I always have my phone with me.

I imagine Apple will improve battery life with future betas. Battery life is always terrible with he first few betas.

Makes sense.

I like the fact that you will be able to manually join WIFI networks. I wonder if Apple has found way to get the watch to join networks with an authentication screen. That would eliminate the need for LTE (for me at least) as I could go for a run without my phone and pick up wifi here and there and get updated if I missed any texts.

Has anybody tried connecting to Comcast (Xfinity Wifi) hotspots with WatchOS 5 btw? There's one of those hotspots every few blocks where I live but I can't manage to get my Apple Watch to connect to them despite the fact that I installed a profile which is supposed to bypass authentication screens. Hmm...

It's a shame it cant be left switched on and stop scanning when no known networks are found within say 5 minutes.

I do not think this is the reason...I have it on airplane mode overnight and it still loses 20%...

Turning off Wi-Fi, in the watch settings, does seem to save battery, and my Apple watch series 1 can still communicate to the nearby phone just fine.

Exactly - while things might be fine for one person, Apple notes there are some known things that are broken still, and some things that are supposedly fixed, but that doesn't mean those are the only issues. From what I see from various people, there are a heck of a lot of issues with workout/activity data.

At this point I'm glad I haven't installed the betas.

I’m also glad that I did not install developer beta system software on my primary use Apple Watch. That’s why I put it on my Apple Watch series 1 instead.

For anyone running the beta, what other existing watch faces have received changes/improvements?

The two I know of so far are Solar and Astronomy, both of which have been updated to allow them to have complications. Astronomy's structure has been changed so that earth/moon/planets view is now selected via customizing the face (the buttons on the face were removed to make way for complications), and the text color now matches the earth/moon/planets selection. Solar's look has been changed slightly to add a full-width horizon glow at sunset, and its complications text color changes as well.

Any other faces that have received little adjustments/tweaks? (I really wish you could specify a different color for the complications on the Color face, as that would allow for some interesting combinations to match the nylon bands - I don't think it would be hard for them to do this, because in watchOS 1 the complications already had a slightly different hue to the selected main color)
