watchOS 5 Wishlist: Features MacRumors Readers Want to See Introduced in the Next Apple Watch Software Update

Most of the things on the wish list are pretty stupid. All i want is smaller bezels, better battery life and more health tracking features. Third Party watch faces would be nice too.

Auto charge reminders - since using my watch for sleep monitoring and the watch gives me 1.5-2 days of charge I don’t have a fixed charge schedule. I would like the iPhone/watch to schedule a reminder for the optimal time to put my watch on the charger and then also set a reminder (on my phone ) in 45min to put my watch back on.

For example, I have a meeting for the next hour. This would be an optimal time to charge and then when the meeting is over I should pick it off the charger.

I'm with you. I've commented on it a number of times. The lack of a podcast app that can play directly from the watch is just stupid at this point. I always listen to podcasts when I run and I am tired of carrying my phone with me. They might have more of my money at this point - I may have upgraded to cellular - with a simple podcast app.

What's worse is that you can't invoke "hey Siri" on the watch to open the podcast app on the phone and start playing. One of the major points of the watch is to be able to accomplish things "hands free". When I'm running, I don't want to try to get my phone out of the tiny pockets on my shorts, try to unlock it, and risk dropping it with my sweaty hands. But hey, this is a real fitness device... sheesh

Also outrageous that Siri doesn’t work at all on non-cellular Apple Watch when it’s not tethered to an iPhone. Why can’t I play/pause/start workouts/etc without the internet?!

"Always ON" is such a foolish item to have on a "Wishlist" What benefit do you get from that other than battery drain. I have my raise to wake off and just tap on it when I want to see a notification or time. Just silly.
Maybe for you. It’s the #1 thing I want. RTW doesn’t work at all when the watch is worn on the inside of the wrist, which is how I wear watches. And a tap is annoying in lots of situations, like when your hands are full or during workouts.

I don’t care if it’s just an option. Folks like you can forgo it and save battery. But I finish the day with plenty of battery, which I would GLADLY trade for an always on display.

Siri that works locally for simple commands such as ”play next song”, ”raise volume” etc in the Music app without connecting to the command database in Cupertino, or the Moon or wherever it goes in order to understand my commands while I live in a tiny pacific or Greek island in the middle of nowhere.. As it is now it is so utterly STUPID it blows my mind. Hej morons att Apple, i don’t have cellular data on my prepaid contract, and I don’ live in California. Am I the only one? IMBECILES!

1. Dedicated Podcast App
2. Dedicated Sleep Tracking App with smart alarm (senses movement and wakes you up in you lightest phase of sleep.
3. Safari App. We need the whole internet on our wrist.
4. Dedicated water reminders /tracking app. So many of us forget to drink.
5. Give developers more tools so third party apps suck less.
6.Things Watch app and every other third party to do app. Add scribble as an input option sometimes you don’t want to use your voice in public
7. Podcasts and music apps able to use speaker for short periods of time

lots of these aren't really great ideas.

Activity app improvements
Watch is about tracking stuff. If you already know your rest day, there's no point in setting it. Just don't work out that way.

Off-wrist Notifications indicator
That's what your phone is for.

Proximity notifications
I think a lot of people occasionally step away from their phone a lot which could be annoying if everyone turned it on.

Sleep tracking
Super obvious since Apple bought that smart sleeping company.

Always-on display
Current and past watches will never have this. Future hardware will probably have it.
Notes App, NOtes App, Notes App. Did I mention Notes App?

My television, computer, light bulbs and smartphone are blank screens until I want to see something. It would be foolish to have those always on.

Right but you aren't uses those when they have a blank screen. Those devices are not intended to be an alway on device like a watch is. Up until the AW watch faces were always available to the user.

At any rate your point is just self-centered, ie., always on is of no use to you therefore it's stupid and of no use to any one. But I gave you a couple reasons in my last post and I'm not the only one here who has indicated it would be a good feature to have. So the only foolish thing here is you suggesting it's a pointless feature.

It blows my mind that your watch can’t make your phone play a sound, and vice versa, for finding one or the other when it’s been misplaced in the house.

Audiobooks, especially an Audible app is missing. Amazon promote audible for users into fitness but no app to use on the Apple Watch - seems a missed opportunity.

The Worldwide Developers Conference is just about a week and a half away, and while we've heard some rumors on what we might see in iOS 12 and macOS 10.14, watchOS 5, the next-generation software update for the Apple Watch, remains a total mystery.

With no idea what to expect, we asked MacRumors readers what new features and tweaks they would most like to see in the watchOS 5 update.

[*]Live step count complication - MacRumors reader Breezygirl would like to see Apple add a live step complication that lets you see how many steps you've completed at a glance, rather than just a complication that lets you know how close you've come to hitting your activity ring goal.
[*]Third-party watch faces - Third-party watch faces are highly desired by most Apple Watch owners on the forums, but so far, Apple has kept the Apple Watch locked down to control the design and interface of the device. As MacRumors reader Relentless Power suggests, a watch face store that includes a variety of watch faces from third-party developers and companies would be great.
[*]Activity app improvements - Right now, the Activity app requires you to hit your goals each and every day to keep a streak going, which can be difficult at times and allows for no rest. MacRumors reader SoYoung would like to be able to set rest days.
[*]Workout app improvements - In the same vein, MacRumors reader Rbart is hoping for a better workout app for running that's closer in design to Strava with additional statistics, a complete history, best performances, and more. Honglong1976, meanwhile, would like to see automatic activity detection to alleviate the need to start a workout.
[*]Podcasts for Apple Watch - Multiple MacRumors readers would like to see a dedicated Podcasts app on the Apple Watch for listening to podcasts on the wrist-worn device.
[*]Off-wrist Notifications indicator - MacRumors reader Lennyvalentin would like to see the Apple Watch better able to keep track of incoming notifications even when off the wrist, with those notifications still showing up but with an indication to note that they were received while the Apple Watch was idle.
[*]Proximity notifications - There's no way to set the Apple Watch to ping when it goes out of range of the iPhone, a feature MacRumors reader Justiny would like to see as a way to keep track of the iPhone and get a reminder if it's left behind.
[*]Sleep tracking - This one is probably a long shot given that Apple suggests people charge their Apple Watches at night, but MacRumors readers would like to see native sleep tracking capabilities.
[*]Always-on display - Given battery constraints, Apple has never implemented an always-on display for the Apple Watch, which is another highly desired feature. The Apple Watch display comes on when the wrist is raised, but it would be nice to have always-on access to the time as is possible with a traditional watch.
[*]Better health analysis and suggestions - MacRumors reader Bluecoast would like to see Apple better take advantage of the health information it collects with the watch to add recommendations and coaching for those who are aiming to meet health goals, as well as deeper analysis.

Is there something you're hoping to see in watchOS 5 that didn't make it on our list? Make sure to let us know in the comments.

No.

It blows my mind that your watch can’t make your phone play a sound, and vice versa, for finding one or the other when it’s been misplaced in the house.

Except... the watch can make your phone make a sound and has been able to since watch OS 2 minimum.

Anyone tried using a boarding pass on a plane with their watch? Turn your wrist down and the display goes off how are you deposed to scan it? Simple Fox apple

Not when doing heavy sport activity or LTE usage. So enjoy every additional hour available.

So, you want miracles or a watch twice as big then huh. Ok then.... you'll wait awhile.
You'd barely get good battery life from a phone with that kind of usage, let alone a small watch.

You reallly DON"t WANT the internet on your wrist and when you watch dies inside an hour you'll know why.

Support for drill sets in swimming (ie. when you are not moving your arms). Would be able to replace my Garmin Fenix 3 for pools swims with that as I love the auto set calculation.

Yes, and it would be nice if the layout of the data on the screen could be customized a bit by the user. For instance, I would like BIG numbers showing the time of the last length to show up on the screen when I push off of the wall. I need reading glasses, so bigger text on the screen would help immensely for my lane swimming. I'd like big numbers for the lap count and the last length time. Biggest company in the world needs to do it all.

Just read about the "always ON suggestion." While it sounds like a good idea, this would dramatically decrease the life of the battery during the day and its lifetime, and then the end-user cry babies would have something else to sue Apple about.

I'd say that the only way this could be achieved is if the watch could be charged while on the wrist and in range of the wireless charger, which could be hard to achieve in businesses such as hospitals and some offices.

Just my opinion.

Yes, can I connect two phones to my watch?? I have a personal phone and a work phone. Would love to get text messages and alerts from both. Maybe no personal email alerts and have work email alerts. Something like that but customizable as to what device sends what alerts to your watch.

Re: Workout App Improvements

Would love to be able to track some basic fitness metrics inside the Health App such as:
  • Pushups
  • Situps
  • Pull Ups
  • Squats
  • Run (Configurable to what you want to record e.g. 2.4km = Australian Army BFA distance)
Doing so would help keep a baseline assessment of your overall fitness much like the military use without the need to install other apps.

Maybe it's me, but this seems like a fairly short list. Perhaps that's testament to how well Apple has done so far.

A possible approach to Always On is to make it a temporary mode, with a default, adjustable duration. This would help prevent excessive battery drain at times that the feature is not needed. Examples:

Setting that allows selected apps to automatically invoke Always On. In the case of Workout, that could be an option to be Always On during a Workout.

Setting in a Calendar Event (such as a meeting) to put Watch into Always On for the Event's duration (though it might not be possible for an all-day Event).

Icon on Control Panel that allows temporary Always On, for pre-determined periods of time

It might be a good idea to also include an indication of expected battery life if the feature is invoked. And if battery life is already low, some sort of warning that the battery will die before Always On times-out.

The day-off function for Activity appeals on one level - everyone can stand a day off, layover day, or sick day from time to time. I know I do. On the other hand, it's a bit of a cheat. The point of Achievements is that they ought to be a challenge. There's no award for not showing up for a race, no medals if you don't finish. While it's disappointing to fall short of an Achievement, success is that much sweeter, and the desire for success is supposed to push us beyond our comfort zone.

Personally, I find Stand the most difficult. When I'm sitting at my desk, deep in concentration, I often miss the gentle reminder to stand. As others have noted, i may miss the Stand goal if I don't put on the watch when I first wake up. But I think that's part of the reason you can't adjust Stand. We need to break certain sedentary habits and it's clear by my own experience just how much harder that would be if I was allowed to give myself a break.

When will Spotify users figure out that Spotify has to produce a Watch app - Apple won't do that for them.

---

Yes, Complications is a time-honored term in analog watchmaking, but I didn't know what "Complications" meant until Watch came along. Personally, I think using the term is a nice salute to tradition, and has meaning to analog watch fans who transition to Watch. Sure, Apple might have come up with a catchy, monosyllabic term of their own, but they didn't. Changing it midstream would likely cause more confusion than would be gained in clarity.
