It was kind of a WTF moment when Apple kept the big cat code name on the first OS X release ...

Nope. That would never happen. Way too WTF.

Never would anyone say "come up with a better name or we'll just call the company 'Apple' after some hippie orchard".
Or say "come up with a real computer name or we'll keep the insider joke (illegitimate) 'Lisa' code name".
Or say "come up with a good name or we'll just use the silly Raskin-misspelled 'Macintosh' code name on the product".

Never.

You'd get fired and end up spending your money on cartoons about toys.

Not even close. WWDC was June 11th. Mountain Lion was released July 25th.

Also... Mountain Lion wasn't announced at WWDC. It was quietly announced on Apple's website along with a developer beta on Feb 16th 2012. Then it was re-demonstrated at WWDC 2012 and released in July.

It's not that I was surprised, it's that those in the tech media were surprised when what they *thought* was a codename actually shipped and was the branding on the box. I could not care less. What I did think was strange was branding with big cats but marketing the desktop with space photos...

But feel free to troll away.

What if Apple changes the naming scheme? What about OS X Pacific? Or OS X Atlantic? OS X Ocean? OS X Waves? OS X Water? Aaaaaaaarrrrrrggggghhhhh...

im tired of waiting. anyone know cook's number? i'll give him a buzz and get some answers, now.

X is the roman numeral for 10.

X is also the 24th letter of the English alphabet. Yes we call it OS "Ten". But it's sort of a double-entendre (yes...I know)...

Xcode® developer software
Xgrid® application program
Xsan® application program
Xserve® server

Do you call it Tencode? Tengrid? Tensan? Tenserve?

OK, maybe some of you might call it Tencode. Just saying, X is more than just a number.

Trust me "X" didn't come out of thin air because they liked that letter so much. Well, maybe Steve thought the letter looked great, could be part of it. And OF COURSE it is a progression from OS 9 to OS 10. That's also part of it. But they had a branding idea due to the intersection. Out with the old and in with the NeXT.

X is a windowing system.

X is a registered trademark of the Open Group.

I could go on. ;)

My God, Apple is so unoriginal now. Not only does it stench of Microsoft, the X makes the picture look like it was meant to be crossed out.

Not really. Apple has always used nature as it's default finder backgrounds. From grass to the water, to space in 10.5. So maybe Apple just chose an ocean wave for 10.9

Who knows this should be the OS9 of OS X. By that I mean sure it's a new OS but it's also a tie in OS to integrate with the upcoming next gen OS. Like the later OS9 patches like 9.2 and 9.2.2 were made to fit in with OS X (via classic mode).

Wow, everything from desktops to laptops at Apple seem to be on a diet.
Better a diet than flat and bloated.

Cool.

They're recycling a 30 year old variant of a 60 year old font that has been used to death all over the planet.

How...exciting.

I rather have Helvetica Nueue than the garish Roboto font. It is even better than the font, Verdana, that Microsoft commissioned. It shows Apple has the $$$$ to pay the royalties for a top-tier typeface than hire some font design hack to do a mismatch of ideas. Roboto is so over-used in the open source world. Many linux distros are now using it as their main font. It looks horrible on low-dpi screens. Verdana is plain ugly.
Windows 8's Segoe is a rip-off of Frutiger. Microsoft didn't want to pay linotype so they pretty much reversed engineered frutiger; adding a glyph here ans there to be technically different.

Helvetica is one of the most highly regarded type. Nueue is a modern and sexy variant.

It is in my top 3 . This specific variant, meta, and univers 55. meta would not work for an OS and Univers 55 is more for fashion print.

food for thought...

"Tidal waves often appear in our dreams when we are under a lot of pressure or when significant change is occurring."

Very very interesting.

Because it wasn't a significant update. I look forward to Monday. We really have no idea what it could look like.

Wave x

Is it really just me but the wave/X looks soooo unfinished or unpolished
