But after that you can see on the printed CDs how the battle of minimalistic Ive vs. sceuomorphistic Forstall took off. Lowest point was printing a real Cat on the CD (Snow Leopard) and then using a Cat Face-Shot for promo material (since Lion). These are the Forstall CDs. The Ive CDs can be found in Panther and Tiger - clean brushed metal X (as brushed metal replaced pinstripes) on black background, with the Tiger version using a more minimalistic X.

Analyzing this now I hope Forstall will never ever work for Apple again, I sincerely hope next OS X rocks and I maybe consider buying a Max again when they have cleaned up the mess, Forstall left.

Forstall was the iOS chief. Did he even have a say on the OS X side of things?

Go read it at 6 points on a retina display and get back to me.

What an utterly pointless comment, it's not being used at 6points on a retina display. It's a well known font being used to good effect, who is suggesting this as a system-wide font?

And MS copied from apple with the GUI, who they (Apple) stole from Xerox. It happens.

again and again, urban legend about stealing anything from xerox, they made business deal with xerox... quite different from stealing (that what ms did to apple)

I WANT TO BELIEVE...

...that 10.9 will be great.

Nice banners, looks clean. I doubt OS X is getting a major overhaul, think they're just theming the banners/marketing material after iOS 7. But I think haswell will allow retina airs sooner rather than later.

I was just using SJ term of the word :(

Very well known that he said "good artists copy, great artists steal". Understand brother? And MS copied, there is a difference.

There won't be animal names any longer

Why are you guys are all so confident that faux leather will be removed from the calendar app, but the whole operating system will always be named after an animal?

The only message in that banner is, that "X 10.9" won't be named after an animal only longer. Flat design in the naming scheme. Remember "System 7, ...8, ...9"?

I do agree with people that have said the X makes the banner look like it's not supposed to be used.

Even so, it has me interested for what's happening with OS X; talk of finally having some new Finder improvements is nice, as I really want a more touch-friendly Finder but with improvements for us keyboard and mouse users too. Not that Windows Explorer has exactly done anything to leave the Finder behind, but as such a commonly used component of the OS I absolutely hate using the Finder; doesn't help that connecting to a single AFP volume can all but shut it down if your network is slow, even when looking at folders on your local machine.

Eh… bit of a mini-rant, but it'd also be nice to see some other file-system related stuff. Personally I'm still really hoping for an integrity checking feature added to Core Storage, preferably with error correction so if a block goes bad we have a chance of recovering the data automatically. With encryption and Fusion it would give Core Storage most of what I want from a volume manager, which would be nice.

That all said, if the rumours are true of the new update having true multi-monitor support then I'd be tempted to buy it on those grounds alone, even though I'd effectively be going back to Snow Leopard in terms of monitor support, though apps designed for the newer full-screen mode are a definite improvement over apps that can sort of go full-screen but aren't really any different.

The thinner font means that they are embracing high dpi fully.

I am wondering the same.

I wouldn't be surprised if they up all their hardware to retina to fully support a sleeker UI.

Who let the cats out of the cradle!

I wonder if OSX 10.9 will have a flatter design which will be a bold departure from previous OSX versions. I will be keeping my Macbook fully charged for this, and the many tears to be shed about the newly designed iOS which will make the threads come Monday.
