OSX New Wave
It will be the first OS in which iOS features (like running iOS apps) will be massively introduced.

i'm sure this has already been posted but i start to realize that we might see parts of the keynote held by jony ive, right? what do you guys think?

Banners are cool and pleasant feel..

The Banners are pretty cool using their own font…helvetica neue :)
Ive designed similarly seeing those posters… maybe apple is looking for their own fonts.. making a cleaner look in iOS 7 or OSX.9 … can't wait to see the WWDC XIII

All of the "Sea Lion" speculation is great. I have been speculating for a couple of years that they would move to sea life theme after the cats. It shares the same natural, organic, lovable vibe as the cats.

Sea Lion
Orca
Dolphin
Ray
Sea Turtle

That would not work. Simply cause all the cats Apple used are known as sleek, powerful and fast animals. A sea turtle is nether sleek nor fast. Not a good image for a modern OS. The only one on your list that would work would be dolphin.

And the code name dolphin has already been used for the Nintendo Gamecube. But no reason why it can't be used again by someone else.

Or Aperture X - please !

Maybe the thin font used for the 7 and X mean Apple is removing all the bloat and cruft and both OSes are going to be lean and mean?

Definitely not Aperture X. They're only on version 3.
Also, definitely not Logic. Apple doesn't usually showcase pro apps. The did for Final Cut Pro X, and people b*tched about it sucking, but to be honest, Apple knows that industry is not making them money because let's face it: movie producers pirate software to cut corners in cost, so screw em.

But this event seems like it's going to truly be exciting

I'm going to be pessimistic here. That way i won't care as much if it sucks.

I just noticed this: OS X's interface is called Aqua, right? And there's a wave on the banner. Wave = water = aqua! I think they're redesigning OS X...

Corny Attempts at Jokes

Seriously, if I had dollar for every corny attempt at a joke in this thread based on a banner, I would probably have enough to buy the next generation of MacBook Air, iPad and iPhone.

Come on people, its a banner, with a 'X' representing the next version of OS X.

With the 'Cloud' defining computing, it could just be a logical 'next wave of software innovation' nothing more. Or, just the beginning of a new user experience. To be honest, OS X has had no serious overall in 12 years. Its really a time for a fresh set of paint in addition to uniformity across the board.

The wave could just be Jony Ive making his point, this release OS X is wave I am gonna use to wash away all the sh!+ Forstall created these past few releases.

Tsunami's are also waves which means, its a major release.

Someone posted the banner for 10.9, it looks like code names are being dropped. Jobs is not around anymore.

Researching on waves you can find some basic meanings:

Its not galactic like 10.5 to 10.8. Its a natural earth phenomenon, which means its more human, something you can better relate to. Don't expect in Galaxy wallpapers.

If you look at the type of wave on the banner, its known as a 'Breaking Wave'. Which means this release of OS X is breaking with the past.

Now, lets ease off the corny 'Sea Lion', Ocean, explicit description of a woman's private area with 'X' and other lame ones. Why? They are just not funny!

Things it will not be called:

Sea Lion
Dodo
Windows X
Or in fact any animal name at all..

It will just be a number. And then even the number will disappear. The name is unimportant. What it can do is what matters. That will be the new focus. Stripping the linkage to a single thing hampers Apple's ability to get across all it can do...

Err...maybe because Dolphin is a well-known Android browser? And a pretty cool one btw:

Not even close. WWDC was June 11th. Mountain Lion was released July 25th.

And everyone saying Tsunami or Tidal Wave... Those names have wwwaaaayyy too much of a negative connotation.

Oh for goodness sake read the rest of the thread before replying. We've already had a follow up discussion.

The wave is just the new design theme for OS X, like how galaxies have dominated the system since Leopard.

I expect 10.9 will just be a small, relatively featureless update named after yet another variety of Lion, like White Lion or something. And I wouldn't be surprised if this time, the update would be free of charge.

I don't expect Apple to overhaul the system until 10.10 or maybe even XI.

Ironically, I think you're onto something... It's not the stench of Microsoft, but it is crossing something out... as in all of the aqua-jelly textured OS elements.

Or maybe it's the end of X and we'll be seeing XI. It does say "Where a new world is developing." Think about it...

What if using code names that most developers use prior to releasing their product to the masses was just a fad? It was kind of a WTF moment when Apple kept the big cat code name on the first OS X release to ship with one on the box.

Hell, remember boxed software?

Yes I remember that time. I remember the time, when Apple really cared about their computers and their naming schemes.

And I really loved the moment of irony during that keynote - when Steve introduced Jaguar, the first real OS X ready for prime time - and they showed that spotted X.

Really - perfect self-ironic moment when they even changed the Aqua-themed X from the Cheetah-disc to the spotted X of the Jaguar disk.

But after that you can see on the printed CDs how the battle of minimalistic Ive vs. sceuomorphistic Forstall took off. Lowest point was printing a real Cat on the CD (Snow Leopard) and then using a Cat Face-Shot for promo material (since Lion). These are the Forstall CDs. The Ive CDs can be found in Panther and Tiger - clean brushed metal X (as brushed metal replaced pinstripes) on black background, with the Tiger version using a more minimalistic X.

Analyzing this now I hope Forstall will never ever work for Apple again, I sincerely hope next OS X rocks and I maybe consider buying a Max again when they have cleaned up the mess, Forstall left.

---- edit ----

Forgot to say: And analyzing this I really understand why I personally see Tiger as the pinnacle of OS X development to date. Everything after was duct taped BS and not nearly as refined as Tiger was.

I was thinking it was OS X, ride the wave. But, your post got me thinking its the opposite. A big X, for OS X, no longer riding the wave. Maybe there is a change up visually to OS X as well.

Maybe the X cross out theory means "don't Apple products wet." Could mean "wave" at your Apple TV(which is totally as lame as Siri on a TV.) I was an employee and I remember this redneck butthole saying "You know, I've waited for the day where I can tell my TV what to do." and thinking "So you've waited all you're life for a television you can talk to?..." I'm sorry, all of that is complete novelty crap..
