You mean the ones that are designed by a Brit and by and large built in Asia with parts designed, and manufactured in Asia. :p
And the profits from which are hidden in Ireland, yes, that's the American Way.

What an utterly pointless comment, it's not being used at 6points on a retina display. It's a well known font being used to good effect, who is suggesting this as a system-wide font?
The poster I replied to.

Sounds really hideous right now... right now I have 3 circles in my dock:
1 - Spotify
2 - The Mac App Store
3 - Activity Monitor (I have it set to show me my available RAM always in the dock, which it does in the form of a pie chart.)

Thankfully I use Candybar or simply command+I and change a lot of my icons. I don't like the new ones, and some look dated. DeviantArt is a great source for custom icons.

And on my Windows7 system:

Code:
\\House\Home\user> echo %OS%
Windows_NT

Internal OS string identifiers aren't changed just because the official name changes. It would break tons of apps without any benefit.

Indeed, the full name and version of Windows 7 is Windows NT 6.1, incidentally this is also the version number for Windows Server 2008 R2.

Of course microsoft markets these as "Windows 7" and "Windows Server 2008 R2". They're the same thing (Windows NT 6.1), just with different feature sets. Just as "OS X Mountain Lion" and "OS X Server Mountain Lion" are the same thing (Mac OS X 10.8), just with different feature sets.

One could argue that apps that break if that string changes are themselves broken and need to be fixed.

What I would like to see:

  • Flatter design - more simple
  • Maps
  • Tabbed finder
  • Icloud turned into a dropbox like service
  • Siri
  • Improved mail app
  • iBooks
  • iWork revamp
  • Aperture revamp!!!!!!
  • Split iTunes into separate apps - store, music, videos, podcasts
  • Trials for apps
  • Improve notification centre - it is so random for me, alerts come in when it can be bothered giving me them
  • Improve App Store load times - I have fast Internet, so why the long wait?
  • Ability for OSX to learn new words

Worst case scenario

Just prepare yourselves for the worst.

Tim Cook:

Scott, you know I love right, I made a mistake.

Scott: D a m n right you did!

Tim: anything you want.

Scott: First law, Jony never goes no where near software development.

Second law, I am skeuomorphize s * * t out of everything software. fluffy cat hair in Calendar here I come!

Jony: whats the problem? I like it, well at least I got my very own copy of OS X just for me. I'll take a million copies please! ;)

Tim: sigh :-\ I'm calling Microsoft UI designers in the morning, I can't deal with this.

I think the days for the Dock are counted, maybe not in 10.9, but in the near future it will vanish.

The last two years I followed the Snow Leopard - Lion - Mountain Lion discussion
I realized that Apple is just at the beginning to use the full capabilities of the gorgerous trackpad implemented in our lovely MacBooks.

In 2008 the trackpad was born, in 2009 Snow Leopard followed and I think the time period was too narrow to implement the full capabilities of the trackpad into OS X.

Try third party apps for customizing trackpad gestures. I use two finger swipes in Finder using BetterTouchTool, great app for customizing a ton of gestures in any app you chose. XtraFinder for tabbed browsing, sidebar colors, dual sidebars, cut/copy/paste and a ton more. Both are free. TotalSpaces bring back OS X 10.5/6 Spaces. I loathe Mission Control, although glad 10.8 allows ungrouping windows by application as Exposé before 10.7.

My only gripes:

  • Memory management
  • Inadequate OpenGL Core 4.0+ support (only shadedobjects is supported)
  • Finder Third party apps shouldn't be necessary to bring basic functions. Needs overhauling.
  • Mail Improved rules, filtering, enterprise support, layout.
  • ContactsSpeaks for itself. Skeuomorphism isn't an improvement. Contact pictures has become cumbersome, seems impossible to drag and drop images, or copy and paste.
  • iCloud Documents management and support for more Enterprise/work applications.
  • iDisk replacement Many of us have 25GB's of storage, which remains unusable. Follow Dropbox.
  • Keychain and Dock syncing need to return
  • Wireless Improve protocol support and stability
  • Remove Skeuomorphism (and "Game Center")
  • Safari Bookmark management
  • iBooks for OS X
  • iTunes, too much in one app. The App /iTunes Store, (i)Photo, Contacts, Calendar, Music, Books, Movies, Mail, Tones, iTunes U, Radio/iRadio soon all wrapped up in a bloated app. Either streamline it or separate some of the apps with integrated "smart" syncing. Anything.
  • Quicktime Apple's proprietary media foundation lacks support for many codecs, is limiting in functionality (I still use Quicktime 7 Pro for some jobs) and seems abandoned. Work out licensing if needed for AVI, WMV (they're still lingering on the net, not dead yet), AC3, MKV, etc.
  • Multiple Display Support Not everyone is using a MacBook/one display. Fullscreen is good for one display systems, disables other displays. What if we want two or three apps in fullscreen?
  • Bluetooth keyboard on startup. It's aggravating needing to pull out a USB keyboard to reset PRAM or boot into another volume.
  • iMessage App Video away message with the ability for contacts to leave one in return. Would be great for the deaf.
  • FaceTime Apple settled the patent suit, work out a licensing agreement to bring cross-platform support as Jobs stated. Otherwise, rather useless. Does iMessage support multiple video conferencing? I remember it in OS X 10.4-6, don't recall seeing it recently.

and finally...

a new Mac Pro!

That is all :p

ok now i am more excited for OS X.
Finder with tabs, more system apps written in Cocoa and a face-lift, bring it!
Apple should think for it's Mac community as pro users, it's the only way it is gonna work.

COME ON guys... it's EASY. the WAVE is an indication of ios (ios had always some kind of aquatic background. Even from the start with the nemo fish.). and steve said "bring it all back to the Mac. well, now their doing it!

the wallpaper is an indication of iOS taking Over the mac. that was easy to figure out... :)

The past few years have proven enough that all these wild imaginations about the logos and banners at WWDC are no more than that. Many people here are reading way too much into this.

I think the top candidates are: Ocelot, Sabertooth, and Lynx.

Lynx I think is least likely just because it sounds too much like Linux.

Hmm...maybe Clouded Leopard too, which might make sense if Apple starts making a serious push with their iCloud services.

Plus it's the name of a top selling deodorant and fragrance product here in the UK...

In OSX I would like the ability to play a video directly from the app to an Apple TV, without having to send the entire desktop.

I can't believe there's over 800 posts arguing about the letter X.

The Da Vinci Code got nothing on Apple's WWDC banner with the letter X.

From what I've seen in the past 13 years of keynotes, the banners are hardly 50% indicative of what's going to be shown.

Even funnier, you're doing the same thing to add to the bunch. :D

Are you a refugee of Windows 8 perhaps? ;)

Lose the X

They should switch to using the syntax: OS X v9. Since the X is supposed to represent 10 anyway, no need to repeat it. It also means they can go to OS X v10 and OS X v11 and have it look better and make more sense.

Honestly, from a marketing standpoint I hope they lose the X altogether and just call it Mac OS Insert New Name Here. Mac OS X has been around for over ten years, and even with continually explaining to people that it's the Roman numeral for "10" not the letter "X", and sometimes even giving the history of Macintosh operating systems from all the System #.#s, passed OS 8 and 9, and through all of the iterations of Mac OS X, people still say Mac OS "EX." I've even heard it several times from salespeople at my local Apple Store! It grates the ears!

I had an instructor in a computer class a few years ago, a while after Leopard had been released, repeatedly say "Mac OS EX" and then show the class a promotional image of Panther as "the current Mac OS EX." I couldn't stop myself. I blurted out in the middle of his lecture, "I'm sorry, you're wrong! It's Mac OS TEN! TEN! It's a Roman numeral, not an 'X'! And that image is three years old! It's two operating systems ago!" Surprisingly, he admitted he knew nothing about Apple or Macs and, a few nights later, allowed me to give a presentation to the class on the history of Apple and Macs, and how Jobs/Gates and Macs/PCs differed from each other. I'm sure my classmates didn't give a **** and thought I was a smug sonofabitch, but I didn't care and the instructor was genuinely appreciative.

To avoid all the hassle though, when speaking I just say Mac OS Mountain Lion, or Snow Leopard, or whatever. I'm fine with Sea Lion if that's what they go with. I'm sure there are some more flattering and graceful images of sea lions than the joke images previously posted on this highly entertaining thread.

Sea Lion would be a good transition to sea mammals. Most sea mammals are highly intelligent, and often extremely powerful, creatures, so naming the Mac OS after them would be fitting. I'd also be fine with them naming the new OSes after oceans, though naming them after animals makes more sense to me.
