I'm a designer and I think this is an X on a picture of a wave. No need for thanks.

COME ON guys... it's EASY. the WAVE is an indication of ios (ios had always some kind of aquatic background. Even from the start with the nemo fish.). and steve said "bring it all back to the Mac. well, now their doing it!

the wallpaper is an indication of iOS taking Over the mac. that was easy to figure out... :apple:

What if the wave is ACTUALLY a cover up of what "X" will be?? In other words, once the wave crashes , which looks like its about ready to, there is something behind it. Washout the old and see what's developing for the future

I like that the thread is almost 900 posts long and over half of them are about the font and the rest about Sea Lions.

I dont know if this was already said, but my interpretation of the banner is: We are going to make a big impact with our next wave of products.

Apple has been releasing some lackluster products recently but looks like this year will be the year to make a "splash".

wow

People are reading too much into it, it is just a default wall paper for next Mac OS X.

Well, there was a very significant tidal wave/tsunami on the day the ipad 2 was released....anyone remember?

I'm ready for them to just stop attaching number to everything and just call it OSX and iOS and I suppose, eventually, iOSX

The 7 banner is iOS

The X banner is for OSX

Wave of change coming.

Honestly, from a marketing standpoint I hope they lose the X altogether and just call it Mac OS Insert New Name Here. Mac OS X has been around for over ten years, and even with continually explaining to people that it's the Roman numeral for "10" not the letter "X", and sometimes even giving the history of Macintosh operating systems from all the System #.#s, passed OS 8 and 9, and through all of the iterations of Mac OS X, people still say Mac OS "EX." I've even heard it several times from salespeople at my local Apple Store! It grates the ears!

I had an instructor in a computer class a few years ago, a while after Leopard had been released, repeatedly say "Mac OS EX" and then show the class a promotional image of Panther as "the current Mac OS EX." I couldn't stop myself. I blurted out in the middle of his lecture, "I'm sorry, you're wrong! It's Mac OS TEN! TEN! It's a Roman numeral, not an 'X'! And that image is three years old! It's two operating systems ago!" Surprisingly, he admitted he knew nothing about Apple or Macs and, a few nights later, allowed me to give a presentation to the class on the history of Apple and Macs, and how Jobs/Gates and Macs/PCs differed from each other. I'm sure my classmates didn't give a **** and thought I was a smug sonofabitch, but I didn't care and the instructor was genuinely appreciative.

To avoid all the hassle though, when speaking I just say Mac OS Mountain Lion, or Snow Leopard, or whatever. I'm fine with Sea Lion if that's what they go with. I'm sure there are some more flattering and graceful images of sea lions than the joke images previously posted on this highly entertaining thread.

Sea Lion would be a good transition to sea mammals. Most sea mammals are highly intelligent, and often extremely powerful, creatures, so naming the Mac OS after them would be fitting. I'd also be fine with them naming the new OSes after oceans, though naming them after animals makes more sense to me.

I couldn't agree more!! I'm willing to go as far as say that these folks that call it "OS-EX" are doing it on purpose. THEY HAVE TO KNOW it's pronounced OS-TEN. I mean, how could they not? The system has been out since 2000. After nearly 14 years if people truly don't know it's pronounced OS-TEN then they have either been living under a rock, don't know their roman numerals or they just shouldn't be using a Mac. :D

I don't really hear people say Oh Ess Ex. Maybe on RARE occasion. I'd rather them stick to numerical values, like 10 or 11. When people say Lion or Mountain Lion or Tiger, I can't even remember which version that was.

I'm pretty sure when Apple goes to version 11, they're drop the X, and it will just be Mac OS 11.1, 11.2 etc.

Well it beats the over-the-top predictions and leaked photos and constant fake threats of people saying (while stomping their feet), "If Apple disappointments me "THIS TIME", I'm switching over to Windows". Yeah, it's usually the same ole people ranting year after year and then a week after the keynote (when they think the forum has forgotten their username connected to all that fake ranting) they come here and post their bragging rights of getting the latest and greatest from Apple. ;)

It's all fine though. Whether you pronounce the numeral X as 'ten' or 'ex' does not matter. Just like in hexadecimal, you could say 'A' (ay) or 'ten'. No difference. In fact typically it's done quite the other way: 0x4ab9aab would be pronounced 'four a b 9 a a b' rather than 78355115.

It's not the numeral system we're "used to" so when you see 'MCMXCIV' do you immediately see that as the '1994' it stands for, do you work it out or do you just go 'em cee em ex etc'? I suspect it's the latter.

So next time someone says 'OS Ex', calm down.

Couldn't agree with you more there. There are too many "Switch from Windows" guys which is causing the whole "OS EX" catastrophe. Switchers are like tourists....URGH they just grate your ears, when they pretend like they know what they're talking about.

And, hey, it would give ammunition to the nay-sayers. As most sea mammals either live in or migrate to and from the polar regions, they are fairly well equipped with layers blubber, so I'm sure that such people would argue that this would align with Mac OS X being bloated, etc...

Yes, unfortunately Apple is still proving that iOS is the priority - the iOS banner is very visible from outside, the OSX banner is further inside. :(

iOS sells more devices / contributes more to their bottom line. More iOS developers than OS X developers, etc.

I know what you're saying, but they aren't foolish enough to bite the hands that feed them (30% for every app sale, amongst other things.)
