Apple is running out of OS 10.x numbers. Will the release next year be 10.10... Seems a little inelegant for Apple. I am predicting this is the last year for OS X... What are the chances that iOS branding will be universally for mobile and desktops?

I am currently not an OS X user, but based on what I know about Forstall he has been responsible for OS X before it was even called OS X. He was hired straight out of college to work at NeXT. So he has been a big part of its development for a long time.

Good points.

Yet Forstall's influence increased substantially. Before iOS, Jobs favored shrinking down the Mac, but he pitted the Macintosh and iPod teams, led by Forstall and Tony Fadell respectively. Forstall won that competition to create iOS, strengthening his position in the company since all hardware executives required the support of Forstall's software engineers in order to add features. Forstall was also responsible for creating a software developer’s kit for programmers to build iPhone apps as well as an App Store within iTunes.

Jobs gave Forstall carte blanche, allowing him greater OS X influence as iOS became the predominant Apple system. With 10.7 and Bertrand Sertlet's department (announced 2009, made public in 2011), Craig Federighi took over OS X development internally in 2009 and Jobs had OS X engineering at Forstall's command, thus the increased skeuomorphism and iOS integration in OS X.

As Forstall's creative control grew so did the frustrations from engineers and a good deal of Apple employees, thus creating a divide in Cupertino that is widely known. Forstall took advantage of his position, especially after Jobs' passing. However tensions increased, Cook needed to reign in the great divide. With Jobs gone, Forstall's reign came to and end.

There will still be iOS influence in OS X, but I'm betting much will be removed with more simplicity, increased engineering focus on stability and support for improved/current gen tech. with nuanced iOS integration and improving already in place features.

OS X Skiing Squirl

Finally, after 31 pages I found someone who's thinking something similar to me.

It's a wave (Aqua) about to crush "X" (OSX). OS 11 is on the horizon and, they want to talk about it/preview it at the keynote.

That sounds like a possibility too.

Actually, they dropped the Mac part, the official name is OS X.

Only in the marketing materials. The full name of the OS is still "Mac OS X".

To be honest I think it means nothing more than

"Something fresh"

That or a cheap waterproof iPhone :p

Seriously? Every banner and brochure is going to be over analyzed like it was some Alien hieroglyphics?

Not interested unless they show some real products and services. Rest is just hype!

Quality contribution

The banners and PR material are always extremely indicative of things to come. Extremely.

Until the release of 10.9, you mean. Watch it change.

Goodbye to IOS and OSX......welcome to 7X , a dual operating system for iPhone/iPad and Macbooks/iMac

Yea because that kind of move works out well for other companies that have tried to shoe-horn a desktop OS onto mobile and Mobile OS onto desktop.

Always a brilliant and successful move. Just look at all the winners.

I predict there won't be any lion, or any animals name. The naming scheme doesn't make sense any more now that iOS is taking over.

I called it when Mountain Lion came out:

Mac OS X 10.9 Sea Lion

Move over big cats, sea creatures are next.

Maybe the X cross out theory means "don't Apple products wet." Could mean "wave" at your Apple TV(which is totally as lame as Siri on a TV.) I was an employee and I remember this redneck butthole saying "You know, I've waited for the day where I can tell my TV what to do." and thinking "So you've waited all you're life for a television you can talk to?..." I'm sorry, all of that is complete novelty crap..

Perhaps the 'X' in the middle of the wave is telling us that this is the end of 'Aqua'

Not giving much away are they. I can't get excited about a new font.

As for the wave? Maybe they are going to move from big cats to marine mammals.

OS X 10.9 will be OS X Dolphin.

Perhaps the 'X' in the middle of the wave is telling us that this is the end of 'Aqua'

That's actually a pretty solid idea. I can't imagine Apple dropping the "cat/German Tank" names. A clever "X" over a wave, that makes sense, especially Ive's rumored flattening of iOS (and OS X).

What does a wave do? It washes away the old and starts a new clean beginning. When an ocean wave arrives, it consumes all that is there, taking it away and leaving nothing but the sand to remain. The wave takes all the clutter and replaces it with simplicity.

Actually this makes some sense. This year will probably be the first time the two operating systems truly begin to be unified. Not just copying apps over to OS X from iOS :)
