Just order it online as long as you get on early enough on Sep 20th I am sure you will get the phone shipped fast.. or even in store pick up the same/next day
It's obvious what is going on here. Apple wants the added publicity of long queues. The pre-order system clearly reduced the queues very significantly, and that just won't do.
This is another example of Apple's new approach: Don't worry about the customer or their convenience so long as it adds to the hype.
I have had every iPhone since the first, and obtained each one on launch day. No more, I am deeply unimpressed by the 5s, and will not be 'upgrading'.

Unless Apple makes some type of exception, yes -- you can order and pay online, and have it held at the store for pickup later that day
im going to go out on a limb here and say the gold wont sell as well....
no pre-order? strange, maybe to do with the finger print sensors? i mean they would have to make millions.
Will it be available at midnight PST? So 8AM GMT? Or will it be midnight everywhere?
Looks like Apple is trying to cut their shipping costs to FedEx and UPS on Sept 20. Let the customers go get them.
I don't see the mass hysteria w/ people lining up for the 5S, but maybe that's just me. Also, download the Apple store app purchase your phone and pick it at the Apple store that evening or following day. Apple has made this process easier over the years.
If they are not doing pre-orders, I will almost bet they will not do in store pick up for a few weeks. If I remember they didn't do in store pick up for the 5 until after the first month or later
Got to admit to been a bit surprised at no pre order for the 5S.
But if we don't live near an Apple Store (and I'm one of them) and need to order through Apple's website we won't get it on release day, but it will only be a day or two after, not the end of the world if you don't get it on release day.

I was thinking there have been a few items that you couldn't buy with the app. Perhaps it was the iPhone 5 that I was thinking of.
There have been several different items where you couldn't log into the applestore web pages to "reserve" a product or see if they had a product on hand. Maybe the iPad over the years?
I wouldn't be surprised if that happens with the 5S -- you just have to go to the store to see if they have any in stock.
Apple is doing this all for media hype. Lines have not been long with the last few releases. This will change. They want the world to see long lines in front of their stores again.
