Steve Jobs has criticized Flash, and now his Apple Cultboys are all on the bandwagon.

This article introduces a really intriguing idea to me...

http://www.readwriteweb.com/archive...eat_flash_surprising_results_of_new_tests.php

What if Apple has an alternate motive for not supporting Flash? Flash may be inefficient on macs alone , but Jobs pulling his support for Flash is no indication of the death of Flash in the future. Given the test results shown in the article, Flash runs faster than HTML5 on PCs.

Last time I checked, the majority of the world runs on PCs.

As far as browser speed, why don't we wait a few days until the new iPhone comes out. Think maybe that will make a difference?

Are the 3 phones in this test identical as far as the specs go?

The iPhone used is basically a year old ...

I'd rather go on what I know now than your speculation but thanks for worrying. ;)

1 question, why would those 1900+ people rate it before using it?

Android users on average being much more tech savvy than iPhone one, I am sure they will know that turning Flash off for normal browsing resolves any potential issues while they still can enjoy Flash for viewing Hulu etc.

I imagine that there is significant overlap between the people berating early iPad sales as a function of overzealous fanboys and the people claiming that the early number of flash downloads and positive comments is proof that flash is incredible, a great use expereience, and durable on mobile devices.

No, they used it. But for a site or 2...let's see how the chips fall once they use it for a week or so...

Androids users, I trust, will not settle for less than 100%.

I'm not shocked by this at all. They can have Flash, I honestly couldn't care less for it! :D

Apple, time to reveal Gianduja :D

Whats right to you may not be right to someone else.

It is quite clear that the choices Apple has made so far have worked out well for them and their consumers.

Apple wasn't the first to make an mp3 player or a smart phone.

They have certainly created the first usable, well thought-out mp3 player and they have turned the digital music market upside down. Every other single manufacturer tried to mimic the iPod's form factor, functionality, menus, down to the color of the earbuds. They have certainly created the first usable multitouch-based, well-thought out smartphone on the market and they turned the mobile phone market upside down. If you don't believe me, take a look at how smart phones from nokia/sony/LG/HTC used to look/work before January 2007 and how they are now.

People just seem to forget a lot. When the iPhone first came out, everyone was bashing the iPhone for the lack of a physical keyboard. "I WANT CHOICE. WHY DO THEY HAVE TO DECIDE FOR ME!". Apple made a choice not to include one. Now, what is the situation here today? Smartphones that suck are the ones with physical keyboards. Some people now even call them "clunky". Just sayin'...

Soon as Hulu has an app and a major porn site switches, Flash is dead. I still haven't seen a long enough list of Flash related sites/products that warrant the amount of hype related to "millions" of people using it.

Think you hit the nail on the head. Thats a huge IF though, where is the incentive for porn sites to switch away from flash. Flash is on every desktop/laptop (even macs) and now its available to Android users. Android has grown so quickly in the last 6 months since Droid was released its not even funny. At the rate Android is going its going to be #1 mobile OS by the end of this year, it will surpass RIM and iPhone, there's no doubt about that. Motorola is releasing 20 new Android phones this year. HTC about the same, Android is on all four major carriers. Where's the incentive for Hulu and/or porn to switch away from Flash based video?

Hardware keyboard would be a death sentence for me.

thanks google, to showing us that flash on a mobile phone is very bad. Sorry but our stevie has right. no one needs flash.
i don't want to wait 10 seconds more only to watch the animated ads.

Thanks apple.

So that makes flash good?

Your Android/Droid numbers (Or statements, you did not bother to make up numbers) are just made up. Android (in total not just droid) Slightly beat Apple in first quarter US Sales. Android sales worldwide are still significantly behind iPhone sales. The motivation for Hulu may be the 100million plus iPhone OS based devices their app would run on...

Google: Enabling Flash is the user's decision.

Apple: "Is protecting me from porn."

Too bad the porn quote had nothing at all to do with flash in the web browser...

So a fast browser is made SIGNIFICANTLY faster... they add flash and it slows it down..

So the faster browser is still fast, correct? lol

Did you miss today's reports about Android 2.2 users watching Hulu on their phones? They enjoy Flash while some mac fanboys waste time supporting their leader in quest against Flash.

So this whole Flash thing is so "kids" can watch Hulu all day?

Yeah. Flash on this thing is like putting a restrictor plate on a race car.

But both Google and Apple use Webkit for the web engine so the next update of Safari on OS 4.0 should be pretty comparable.

You would have to be a dumbass to not understand that loading flash content is not going to slow it down a little. It's more content to load.

Personally I'm very happy to see flash. I would rather a device with more functionality than presentation. They have the option if you want flash or not.

Apple products are all about presentation, other devices are more about functionality.

If you dont want flash, no biggie.. dont install the plugin.. at least android users have the option instead of Steve dictating what you are allowed to do on the device.

Also it's the first public release of a BETA, so it's going to get better and smoother.

Lets not also forget this update brought many other changes.. such as USB tethering, or WIFI Hotspot tethering. I'm able to make a wireless signal to the other devices around me using the 3G service, and not incurring any additional charges on my account :)

How is this in anyway surprising? The browser has to load more content and compile more. Obviously things are going to slow down. I think it's worth the trade off, especially if flash can be toggled on and off.

Everyone acting like this is proof that the iPhone doesn't need flash is delusional.

So this whole Flash thing is so "kids" can watch Hulu all day?

lilo777 never said anything about "kids" so I don't know why you have that in quotation marks (they're called quotation marks for a reason).

Indeed :)

I won't be looking at any iDevice anymore until Apple wakes up to users needs and one of those needs is definitely Flash support...

Who cares what you will be looking at or not... That is a moronic comment and I cannot believe I answer your post... Yes, I believe it now (i pinched myself though...)... Flash is full of flaws and will remain full of flaws, whether Apple adopts it or not. Who in H##L are you to know what users want or not?

it seems to me like you are the type of users who love their windows-based system despite all the bugs, the viruses, the incompatibilities between apps and the blue screen of death... Just go out, buy an Android, tweak it like you want and do whatever you want to do but do not pollute this forum with such moronic comments "i will not look again..." Who cares?... Sounds like a 5 YO kid at a playground... Who stole your cookie?

Many people here talk about "having choice".

Flash seemingly degrades the user experience on Android devices, and it's a proprietary standard that goes against the "open-web" philosophy. So, logically, an Android user would not turn on Flash except for sites that require the plug-in. That's not what I call "having choice" (you're being forced to use Flash in those cases).

Having choice would mean to be able to use these websites with or without Flash. By definition it's not the case as we're talking about sites that require Flash to be usable.

Websites will have little incentive to switch to a Flash-less version if all popular devices can (at least optionally) run Flash. That is, unless a big and popular OS/device maker decides to boycott Flash, which is what Apple is doing. I think it's the only way to accelerate the transition to open-standards like HTML5, which may have never occurred if the iPhone OS could run Flash.

That article was written in March. Since then, Apple released public API's to allow hardware decoding on Mac OS X, and following that, Adobe released a beta version of Flash (called 'Gala') that took advantage of this.

So essentially, the crux of that article:

"According to Adobe, hardware acceleration is not supported under either Linux or Mac OS X, the latter because Mac OS X does not expose access to the required APIs. "

…is now invalid, and so that argument has vanished

Point is - the marketplace decides. Companies that try to push something else on consumers will suffer. (Sony stumbled after BetaMax was rejected in the consumer space (in spite of many advantages) - then redeemed itself by coming out with the best damn VHS decks on the planet).
Sony was hardly the best VHS maker on the planet. Not even close. Geez. And Betamax had only one true advantage: a slightly smaller size. Everything else they both evened out after a couple years. Video quality, tape length, etc., all evened out.

Blu-ray won for being a better, more modern technology. HD-DVD was crippled by trying to stay more compatible with old school DVD. (If you're going through the pain of changing formats, make a bigger leap with longer payback - not a small jump.)
You really don't know what happened, do you. HD-DVD is exactly the same tech as Bluray, it is in no way compatible with DVD. That's why there are lasers that can handle both with a simple tuning change, but a secondary laser was needed for DVD. And, both HD-DVD and Bluray players have always offered DVD support, so they are equal on this.

Bluray won because of greater industry support, and Sony's willingness to spend ungodly amounts of money to make sure it happened. Possibly the PS3 sales helped, but I'm not so sure. Toshiba was overmatched (on the business side) from the start, they tried to survive by pricing movies lower at first, and it failed. Disc prices at Walmart now don't apply to that issue.

Who in H##L are you to know what users want or not?
probably because he or she is a smart phone user and Flash has been something many users have been begging for. That doesn't mean all users want it, but users definitely do. What's wrong with giving people a choice to have flash?

it seems to me like you are the type of users who love their windows-based system despite all the bugs, the viruses, the incompatibilities between apps and the blue screen of death... All software has bugs, so unless you can find something inherited bad in Flash your argument falls flat on its face.
