Oh well, let's hope for a firmware fix (or 10.5.2 if it fixes it) soon.
Whens that due?
I definitely think you've got a hardware problem.
My new Mac Pro with the same OS install (on the same hard drive in fact) has been up since Sunday morning with no signs of a crash. I soak tested the CPUs at 100% for 12 hours solid with no problems. If anyone knows a demo or similar to max out the GPU let me know and I'll test that.
There's speculation and rumors about a 10.5.2 release tomorrow (the 29th). I don't know if that will be enough to fix our graphics issue, I think a firmware release is upcoming to do the trick.
But there are so many others (including myself) that are experiencing the same problems. Remember the recent iMac issues? I had that model of iMac and didn't have the freezing issues as others had but this time I'm on the other side of the fence. Some are experiencing the graphics freeze issue and some are not. Really seems a lot like the iMac fiasco.
Could be a hardware problem, but by itself. I truly believe a firmware update will fix it.
EDIT: Also, some users that have exchanged their machine for a new one are experiencing the same problems with the new one.
Not sure you read my original post. I've had 2 Mac Pros, the first had issues with frequent crashes from the outset. So I got it swapped for a 2nd machine, very different serial number and made in Ireland not China. Since then, no crashes despite the soak testing.
This with the same firmware, and even the same boot disk (therefore OS install). Sounds like hardware to me.
I feel your pain mateI did read your first post. But what you're saying confirms my statements. Some users are experiencing the issues, some are not. Some are exchanging machines and some of the new ones still have issues and some of them don't. This is exactly like the recent iMac issue. Don't you find it strange that the iMacs that had the freeze issues are using a variant of the same video part?
Again, it may be hardware but not just hardware. I still believe a firmware update will fix this just like it did the iMacs.
BTW, I don't want to take my machine in for an exchange and have to wait a week for another one (mine was a cto)
and then have a firmware update that comes out tomorrow to fix it while I'm without my machine.
.....hey maybe we could get a free 8800 upgrade if all our Ati's are fooked![]()

I am not sure why you keep on insisting it's not a hardware related problem - if it's software related, EVERYONE, as long as they use their system a certain way, WILL see your problem, but it is obvious not, as basically everyone with new Mac Pro will see the problem (or as long as they install certainly software that you uses), so I don't think that is the case. I have my system up for 4 days, and the only crash I have is when I was using the funky NTFS utility to delete stuff from the NTFS partition. The only difference is that I DO NOT use the stock ATI/AMD card. Practically most screen problems are pointing at the video card driver or hardware is the issue (I put driver almost the same as hardware because a lot of times, driver problems are basically updated driver uses tricks to get around hardware problems). I agree with some posters that the sleep/restart problem is most likely a software or at least OS related. I cannot say anything about the old iMac problem, but with firmware updates, it can be due to hardware problem - they might've just downclock the video card or what not to get around unstability problem. I ask some FAE engineers that work with video cards, and they all say the problems you describe are related to hardware problem of the video card.
Who knows, unless the AMD card they use are really new, it could just be some problem with the EFI that is shipped with the card. Mobile and desktop cards are usually different (meaning they can use the same GPU, but the card itself would be designed differently), so I cannot say if it's the same problem that the iMac has would be fixed with the firmware update, but I can say one thing - AMD/ATI needs to do their QA better...

So what you're saying is a firmware update (like the one that fixed the recent iMac issues) won't work? Also, I'm not saying it's not a hardware issue, I just think it is more than a hardware issue.
EDIT: I'm on the phone with Applecare right now........
EDIT:2 Applecare guy says that there has been many reports of this same issue and now has transfered me to a product specialist......
I'm sure this has been said, but looks like bad viddy memory.
So you have no probs with your machine and it was assembled in Ireland? was it your first one and where did you buy it from?
.Update: Product specialist is emailing me a utility to run.....
Update2: Well, after an hour on the phone they had me run a utility called "Capture Data"
and I sent them the resulting file and he escalated it to their engineers. I'm supposed
to hear back in 24-48 hours and there's nothing else they can do right now outside
of swapping my machine. Even the product specialist said it would be better to escalate
than to swap the machine yet.
.
Hi mate I have already sent the results of the capture data in over the weekend, thats why I waiting, so the engineers can have a look. Im in the same position as you now, so ill let you know as soon as I here.
I phoned UK Applecare this morning and the guy said he had not heard of anyone else reporting this mac pro freezing issueHis only suggestion was to zap the PRAM. I told him I already had.
By the way, mine was from Ireland (the mac pro I mean, the Applecare guy was a Geordie!)
I havent had 1 crash since i stopped using Safari... dunno why it works for me (people says they get the same crashes with Safari closed). Mine was made in Irland.
Ok,
I spoke to my specialist today. The engineers want to swap my machine over again.
I don't think they are aware of what the issue is yet really, but I think we can rule out the assembly country has anything to do with it as the rep said they literally just put the bits together and the BTO are done in Ireland but all have the same parts.
Anyway im waiting to hear back from him again today.
So ill be back.....hopefully![]()
Ugh, that does not sound promising.![]()
