It was just starting to do that monday night and tuesday morning. That's when
I said enough is enough.
Well mine isn't shutting off by it self. so maybe yours had a more serious problems, Then these screen issues.

Yeah, I just saw that too. I was gonna try it myself but got fed up with the constant freezes and shut downs to bother with it.
BTW, I'm user "Dave at the River" on the Apple support forums and I've posted in that thread.

We got two of them here and one is just fine - the other one got these screen issues.
The only difference I can see is that one came with a seagate (the good) and the other with a western digital harddrive (obviously the bad)
coconutIdentityCard (2.2) can't tell the right built-date. Any other way to distinguish them? Both come from Cork, Ireland.
Maybe this helps filtering the bad...
Yeah, I was trying to eliminate possibilities as well. I tried swapping the hard drive out for a different one and even tried reinstalling Leopard on the original one.
I still came up with the same issues. I wish I could've narrowed it down.

I just saw my good one came with hynix-memory, the other got micron.
Although I guess (as everybody does) it's a graphicscards-thing... I'll watch out for more.
Has anyone tryed to get a replacement Video/Graphics Card ? instead of getting a new machine.
I got my pro yesterday with the stock Ati card and I have no issues. How long did they take to come up?
Update: My Mac Pro just had that graphic glitch but it didn't freeze the computer this time ? It lasted on the screen for maybe 2 seconds and then went away.
Ok so they will be replacing mine, just have to wait a while for it to get configured then hopefully ill leave these problem behind![]()
Same here; Mac Pro 2008, HD2600XT, 2.8Ghzx2, 2GB, 1xSATA320Gb, 23" Apple screen.
Screen freeze; Mouse still moving (I notice a little video noise near the cursor). Itunes can/will keep playing, sleep/wake IS possible using powerbutton but then really garbled video on wake up. Leaving in fact no option to hard-power down and restart. And work untill the next time.
My suspicion it is purely HD2600 XT driver related, OpenGL issue or another Leopard / HD2600XT incompatability. This is why:
- I haven't seen any complaints of people using Nvidia 8800GT ?
- Just power on, do nothing at all, and the machine will keep running without any problems for days and days.
- Using BOOTCAMP I tried Vista 'on the other side', pushed it to the limits, and there seem to be no video troubles here. So much for hardware failure.
- Worked the whole support-guidelines (numerous hardware tests (no problems), resetting everything, unplugging, reinstalling, the works), to no avail.
Still, I use this as a business machine and can't afford to wait for updates *any* time. Apart from the fact that my 14 day period is ending... I have work to do and clients waiting!
- Checking the system I see quite some HEX dumps starting/ending with a GPU debug notification.
I will receive techsupport on location here in about a week. Asked them to bring a 8800 as well. Considering my experiences above I don't really see the point in rejecting/resending an entire new Pro with another 2600XT.
Let's hope they bring a 8800 as well and see if that solves a mystery.
Otherwise I'll probably be resending MacPro's untill the problem is solved?
Apart from this... this machine just ROCKS.

Ah... that explains reluctancy sending me that card I experienced with support. Why didn't they just tell me thatCause they haven't shipped yet.
This is all so terribly frustrating. I've still only had the issue once, in my first four days of ownership, but I can't help but to think this is just the tip of the iceberg.
I think this is probably the best course of action. Hopefully, we'll see the fix before it gets worse.Yes, but in your case I would try to hold out from exchanging it as long as you can.
If that's what you're thinking. Of course if the problem returns and/or increases, you may
want to get in touch with Apple before the 14 day period.
Yours seems to be in much better shape and a software/firmware fix should be out soon.
I've used my new MP for a week now, with dozens of normal sleeps and no screen problems.
Due to a screw up on my part yesterday (multiple main users from my migration and an incorrect deletion), I had to reinstall from the DVD-ROM.
Had the normal few restarts during setup as I loaded new software, but got everything working.
Then I put the computer to sleep last night. Tried to wake it up this morning, and I got a restart chime, followed by the "weird screen" during log in! So BOTH of the strange issues (restart from sleep and screen) occurred after a new install from the DVD (as opposed to a factory install).
Did others with this issue also install from DVD?
Cause they haven't shipped yet.
But I still think your correct in assuming the GPU is to blame.
Thought I mentioned that I didn't use the ATI/AMD card and I don't have screen issue (hard drive is another thing - think one of my SATA port went nuts), but then again, nobody should be asking how I can get another card![]()
