I survived with 8 GB iPhones for 4 years (even up to iOS 7). I just downloaded the apps that I found necessary, and any large apps like games would only be temporary (unless you use the iPad for gaming in which I think you would need a larger capacity). It's unfortunate, because I would also really like to carry all of my music with me as well, but the storage is just so low!

Since the 16GB comes out of the box with only around 12.5 GB's avail, it would never work for me. While at the Apple store, I made a point to look at the various iPads on display & note their storage amount. Everyone I saw was the 16. I then looked at what each had installed and what remained. Most only had about 1.7GB's left. That was enough to convince me to go to the 32 model.

The bottom line for me is that $100 is outrageous for 16gb more storage and I don't know how anyone can defend that or why they want to defend it. It's an essential upgrade for a large chunk of consumers, even casual users, which puts the baseline price for an iPad at $600.

For anyone trying to decide, my advice is to upgrade to 32gb if you can afford it. Micromanaging and being forced to rely on cloud services sucks, especially if you travel. I know many casual users who have eventually run out of space on their 16gb models.

I think the difference is that you can't compare a 8gb phone with a tablet.

Speaking for myself, I have never downloaded a movie or book on my phone or tried any kind of multi-tasking on it. I think a tablet opens up a lot more options, (which are probably available on your phone), but might not ever be used for those purposes.

To me, a tablet is a different animal, that's why I would always go for more storage on a tablet than a phone.

We've owned the 32gb iPad 1s, and I knew we couldn't go back to 16. Which is why I couldn't really turn 3 iPad 1s into 2 "new" iPads with the Target deal. I had to jump to 32gb on them. So we ended up with 1 mini, and I kept my 1 for the time being.

I debated it for the kids - but even then, I figured we were going to keep them awhile, so 32 it was.

Now my parents are fine with 16s, but they only have a few games on theirs for the kids.

I too was hoping that 32 was going to be the entry level this time around. Oh well, maybe in 3 years when we upgrade again!

i dont know why people let apple rape them extra money for more storage. $100 for 16 gb? come on man

It is what it is.

If you can't afford it, or believe $100 it's to high of a price to pay, than that's your opinion, and I understand that. To me it's worth it; yeah it's a high price to pay for 16gb extra of room, but I made the choice and I'm fine with it.

I knew going in that if I wanted this tablet a certain way I would have to pay for it, and I did.

have about 3 pages worth of apps and less than a gig left. i either need to dole out another 100 bucks or apple needs to make the starting storage 32 gb.

They make a significant bit of their ridiculous profit margin on the added memory. No way are they going to upgrade the storage on the base unit without increasing the price. so you might as well just exchange for the upgraded model now.

they do make a killing in profit from the amount of storage thats put into iPads but i can't imagine that they won't upgrade the base model soon. apps are getting so big that eventually apple will be forced to upgrade the amount of storage.....i hope

My mom doesn't even know how to download apps ... and doesn't seem to care. It's the perfect tablet for web surfing, watching videos online, writing e-mails, and talking to relatives on FaceTime.

16GB is a good size for Apple because it is just enough to function, but annoying enough to get a lot of people to upgrade. I would bet they keep the 16GB base for as long as is feasible, but perhaps up the increments to 64GB and 128GB.

16Gb air suits me, had a 64gb 3 just filled it with stuff i never used, syncing takes longer too. Harder to re sell the bigger the gb, most buyers on ebay just want a cheap iPad and don't care if its 16 or 128.

My previous iPad 2 was a 32gb. I never came close to filling it so I was going to get the 32gb iPad Air, but I thought I'd take the opportunity to move all my magazine subscriptions over to the iPad now that all the magazines I read have that option available.

So now, I figured that I may as well get the 64gb Retina Mini, as it's the same price as the 32gb Air and has the same internals.

My 16GB air still has 10GB available and I've got 8 games, 6 books and 4 magazines loaded on there. Plus some podcasts and a few TV shows. I guess I'm not a power user.

I have a 16gb iPad Air, but also a 32gb Nexus 7 FHD, and a 64gb iPhone 5. I use iPad Air 16gb for browsing, streaming movies, and holding a few large games, it's good enough for me. Probably would have went for a bigger model, but next gen video game consoles are releasing this month, so it was budget time

Couldn't agree more. That's where Apple makes most of its iPad profit, stoking fears of running out of memory. In reality, apps, music, videos, etc. often sit unused on your mobile data warehouse.

Bought an iPad Air 16gb at Target with trade-in yesterday. I also have an IPad 3 with 64gb. So iPad 3 for heavy storage lifting and Air for fast internet streaming.

Competitive with the market?

Which other tablet computer gives you 32GB of storage on a base model?

for mainly at home use, grab a 16 and get a network attached drive to stream content and not bug your MBP for it.
I did the NAS thing up until recently (it broke) and that does work really well for streaming your content. Sadly I lost a lot when my drive broke but that's another discussion.

With $200 Target trade-in, iPad Air 16gb cost me $313 (including taxes). An iPad Air 32gb would have cost $442. That's 41% more just to go from 16 to 32 gb.

I'll save that $$ for the next generation iPad. 16gb works for me.

When you buy an iOS device with 16 GB, you will likely see in iTunes that your available space for content is closer to 12 GB. I for one, wouldn't even think of buying a 16 GB iPad again, but it depends on what it's to be used for. Safari and ebooks only? OK, then 16 (12) GB is enough.

yeah and $400 from 16gb to 128gb considering they both do the same thing is overkill, and all that needs to be backed up anyway.

I knew that I needed a lot of space, so I've always bought Ipads 64 GB. My Ipad 3 has 17 GB left because I've removed the ones I don't use. My Air has very few apps installed, but I know I'll start collecting more and more again.

Ok ok. yes other brand will give you more storage but none of them will give you the same screen resolution and the price for 1gb per 100$ get down when you go all the way. Yes it is expensive. Yes it seem unfair. For me it all about the OS the screen and the quality, android is a good OS dont get me wrong but each brand have thier version and it always slightly different on each.

I know after they intall the screen they dont spend 100$ to make the step from 16gb to 32gb. I think they sell the 16gb closer to what they spend to make one and then use other version to make profit. Dont forget that price is not just hardware and workforce, price is also based on the engineering, all the effort on a product cost something and they need to charge us.

Yes i think is expensive but i also think i bought something that will last.
