Again, what difference does it make what the "standard" is? Buy the size you need. There was nothing stopping you from buying the 32GB model.

Clint

That's an absurd statement. Would it not make a difference if the standard was 4GB and I had to pay $599 for the 16GB? What Apple makes the "standard" affects everyone wether they get that model or higher.

i personally don't put videos or music on my ipad because i have ipods and an iphone and i still have filled a 16 gb ipad without even thinking about it. if you have a big media collection i would definitely go with 32 gb. i have some pretty big games on my ipad which is the main culprit of my lack of space on a 16 gb. ms words docs. can be viewed on an ipad

I did an exchange on my 16GB and got the ATT 32GB iPad Air. I'm not sure what I might use the extra space for, but I thought it was worth the $100 in case I need it later. I'm really not big on downloading apps. I may use the space for photos or movies.

Actually it's more like if Ford sold one car, and the base model of that car had only 2 seats. Except in this analogy most normal people buying the car have no real way of knowing how many seats they need because they don't know before purchasing how much space their children (apps and media) will take up in the back seats. Do they need 4 seats? 16? 128!?? And if they go with the LTE package, they can go from only driving on roads around their neighborhood and work to driving on roads all over. Oh, and only two colors.

Actually cars are a horrible analogy. The fact remains that Apple has, since the original 16GB iPad was unveiled in 2010, doubled the base storage capacity of the iPhone from 8GB to 16GB and computers like the MacBook Air from 64GB to 128GB. And yet they've added storage-hungry features like Photostream for photos and videos and retina-enabled apps. But through FIVE generations they've stayed at 16GB. Weird.

All of the "normal" users I know with 16GB iPads complain about the lack of space. And since surveys have proved that most normal users are on a 24-36 month upgrade cycle, having only 16GB in 2015-2016 just sounds crazy to me.

Hey hey those were some of my points in there you know give me some credit :D :D jk but yes someone sees the agreement! Doubling the resolution alone of a device guarentees that the media for it will increase in size accordingly....most people I know poor or just stingy go with the base model, yes they could research and be smart like me but I've learned you can't expect consumers to be smart, throw a $120 HDMI cable in front of someone and a little talk and they've bought it over the $.55 one on Amazon...and as I've said, stream costs money off of WiFi...local storage could very well save you lots of cellular data bills.

It just depends on how you use it. I bought a 64 GB iPad 2 when they came out and found that I just filled it up with junk that I never used. I put all my music on it, but at home all I ever used was the remote app to stream from my iMac to my sound system. The only video content I watch is Netflix and YouTube which is all streaming. I surf the web and do email. I also never used the photo app that much. I have about 50 apps installed and only the Apple ones are real large. I don't game much except for free apps like Hill Climb Racing.

This time I just got a 16 GB Air and it will be fine for how I use it. It would be nice if Apple made the base model 32 GB, but by charging a $100 for a few dollars of memory it's a cash cow for them.

Also I use Google Music so I can always access all my music and my last Droid Maxx update gave me 65 GB of free Google Drive storage for the next 2 years.

You seem to be assuming that Apple would keep the same price for whatever the lowest end unit is. If people were whining about the price being $100 too high across the board, that's a different issue than saying that Apple should drop the 16GB models (presumably because people are too foolish to determine for themselves what size storage they need).

Personally, I'd be more than happy if Apple would drop the price across the board on their iPads. But it doesn't affect me at all if they sell a 16 or even 8GB iPad, because I was bought the 64 because that was the right size for me.

Logic... It's not just for philosophy majors!

Dont forget that price is not just hardware and workforce, price is also based on the engineering, all the effort on a product cost something and they need to charge us.

Yes i think is expensive but i also think i bought something that will last.

What you describe is manufacturing expenses.
Price is what the market will bear and is based on supply and demand.

Good call, wish I did that right from the start

Needs change.

For the first year of owning my ipad3 (I went with the 64gb version), I didn't really use up much space, so in theory, 16gb would have more than sufficed, and to be honest, there were times when I questioned if I had made the right call.

However, there were times when I really needed the extra memory. I have only recently just developed an interest in IOS gaming, and some of the games I am playing really take up a fair bit of memory (stuff like war hammer and Magic each take up ~ 1gb) that pushed me over this 16gb threshold. Also, stuff like photos, videos and pdfs are slowly but surely starting to pile up.

I currently have used up about 28gb of storage. So yeah, this is the sort of thing you can't really plan for in advance.

I dont understand app install overload. How often could you possibly be using all of those. Take some things off until you need it. I've watched people just hit the appstore and go download crazy on stuff they'll never use...just cool to have.

That's my approach as well. I don't need a bunch of crap apps on my devices.

That said, no one on this thread has talked about extending storage memory on SD cards via the camera connection kit as an option.
From what I've read, one can add and remove media such as movies pretty easily.

Now, probably not something mom and dad would be able to do, but for most of us here, it would be a piece of cake.

So get a 16gb model, spend $30 on camera kit and another $10 on a 32gb SD card. Yeah, yeah, it's not as elegant having a cable hanging off the iPad. Not an issue if you're using it primarily at home and loading stuff on occasionally.

Dont forget wireless hard drives! They can be shared among all of your tablets/pc's, whatever too. I was looking at the connection kit route, but I decided on wireless HDD when out (really only need it for video watching on vacation) and about and a HD connected to my router when at home.

So today I pulled the trigger on a Retina Mini with 64 GB wifi/cellular. I do have a few uses that could use the space as I take courses and often they come in mp4 and mov files.

Are the sims these days universal? I was not really happy that via Apple Store on line, you are forced to pick a cellular provider. Hopefully someone can clarify for me the sim situation. Some of us would prefer to get our iPad and then do some shopping for a cellular provider.

I've always found 16gb more than enough but then I only use my Air for web browsing, music and Netflix really, I can see you would eat up storage quickly with the higher end games. I also seriously resent paying £100 for £7.00 worth of memory, not just being tight, apple are having a laugh!

128 all the way. Was going to get 64 but for another $100 it'd be silly not to get the extra 64gb. Now don't have to worry about storage at all. Shame on Apple for not making 32 standard though

Totally agree! Was going to go 64GB, but decided that an extra $100 for another 64GB of space was worth it to me. Hate having to worry about how much I put on my device.

I'm leaning towards the 16GB Retina Mini based on the past usage of my original iPad. I'll really only be using it for web browsing, Netflix, and YouTube. It would be nice to have a larger capacity to put movies on it if I'm ever on a long trip (in the car) without internet access. Tough choices...

same here, i just ordered a 16gb air for the same purpose. n $100 for the extra storage is a joke, win/win for apple cuz there r always idiots with too much money willing to pay for it.

I always get the largest capacity regardless. May not utilize it now but in my caee it always comes in handy later. Was the case with my other devices.

Better to have and not need than to need and not have. :D

Just chickened out and cancelled my rMini 64GB order, changing it to 128GB.

Reasoning :
My iphone is at 56 of 64GB with a few apps but mainly music and podcasts.
My ( to be replaced ) ipad2 is at 30 of 32GB with applications, photos, magazines and a few podcast but no music or video.

If the mini is to be last more than a year, and to be useful while traveling; as magazine viewer ( some push out > 300MB per issue ) and as an editor for digital camera files (which now pump out >24Mpixel resolution) every GB is going to be needed.

The extra $4 a month will soon be forgotten.

I still don't think I will have space for more than a few hours of TV or movies at a time, so one of the WiFi drives will be the ideal supplement for such large and numerous, but infrequently accessed files.

How much usable space do you get with a 16gb model? I would expect around 12.5, after the formatting and iOS. Is it in that ballpark?

Yes I believe it was just shy of 12.5 , more than 12.

OT: flash drive / hdd + hootoo tripmate + nplayer app = no storage problems on my 16gig

16 works for me but I will be happy when 32GB becomes more standard. Power users will always need more but 32 is enough to fill a lot of people's needs.

With 16 I just have to be conscious to delete stuff I'm not actually using anymore. If I had more space I'd just let it get cluttered.

This is my situation also. With iTunes match, dropbox for documents & photo's & using the likes of Netflix & other streaming sites for video content I find myself easily able to manage space on the iPad 16gb. I only have apps that I will actually use on a regular basis. I would be willing to bet that a lot of people with 32gb iPad's just fill the iPad up with apps & content that they might not even use (which is perfectly fine of course).

Lol I don't see how this is apples fault...?
Shoulda bought a 32GB then.

Storage size is the same for non-retina and retina iPads, but retina iPads have four times the resolution (meaning much larger apps) but still have the same starting storage size.

That kinda is Apple's fault. Bad planning at the very least. It stands to reason that someone will be able to store next to nothing on a 16GB retina device compared with a non-retina device.

i have a 16gb ipad 4 retina, it just requires some discipline about what you store and what you delete.

for the extra money i would go for cellular +gps than 16 to 32gb

... though both upgrades are far more expensive than the manufacturing cost to apple (thats ok btw cos they are a private company)
