Hi. In the process of geting the 10.6 to work on the PPC, after some small success I got bored and started playing around with OpenFirmware. I temporarily edited .properties to identify my PBG4 as PMG5 single to see what the OS X will tell me. Well.. I typed mac-boot and i got that logo of a file with questionmark on it... Ups... Okay no problem I rebooted it so the changes will get back to normal, so they went but the OS X didnt booted at all... Just chime and grey screen... a disassembled the PB and shorted the pad that say SYS-RESET, that after the reboot got me into the OS X but now the Finder wont launch at all... Its trying repeatedly but it wont launch... Help me with my stupidity please :-(

Assuming you haven't messed up anything on the hardware/firmware side, you could try booting from an Install disc or external drive with OSX on and see if that works ok. If so, then somehow your installation got b0rked. Disk Warrior (preferably) or FirstAid/TechtoolPro etc might sort it out. Otherwise archive and reinstall.

If it is a firmware issue, you could try using this as a resource. It's still very much in progress, but it's useful. :)

The OpenFirmware works, just the OS X is having a crazy time.
Hi JoyBed,

Is this inside 10.6 or 10.5?

Best regards,
voidRunner
Inside 10.5.8 because from the 10.6 I got some frameworks and apps to run on PPC.

Thanks for this advice, I will try it as soon as I get home.

Interesting for any others not working on it ;) Its pain in the rear... Torture, sadomasochism, but in the end its worth it. Good feeling to get something like that working, same with the Java 1.6 and 1.7 for PPC I released. Im happy that all of you are enjoying it and using it. But this 10.6 will be a loooong work.

I'm still stunned by all the new developments, releases, and ground broken in just 2019 / 2020 alone.

Wikis, Trimcelerators, foxPEP, AquaWeb... Arctic Fox, SpiderWeb, InterWeb, Linux Remixes... Linux growth, development, and adoption... PowerPC Media Center 7, Java 6 and 7, and now this new 10.6 hybrid project (the PowerPC holy grail) just to top it all off...

Absolutely stunning; and again, all over a period of just above one year.

I don't think any of us saw these days coming, that's for sure...

EDIT: Ah yes, and now the new Links2 port as well. :)

Wow 10.6 on PPC? Is there any PPC code in Snow Leopard? It would definitely be awesome if you can get it to work but I guess you won't be able to launch any applications for 10.6+ since those are not universal binaries anymore?

Thats a good idea. I will try it, I still can open terminal so mounting a .dmg and opening the installator is possible even without working Finder. I will report with the results.

EDIT:
Today I hate my work ?

Yes... a lot of l33t h4x0rz extending these machines. I admit that my attention has been drawn elsewhere (video game cabinets) and I haven't been keeping up as of late, but I'm slowly starting to dig my PPC machines back out, one at a time, to play around with some of this. That I'm able to set up a server to download playable video in OS 9 on my Wallstreet is pretty damn cool :)

I attempted to put a Mini G4 into a cabinet recently, but it was just too limited with regards to front ends for emulators, rendering, encoder support for controls, etc.

What would be cool is Snow Leopard running on PPC machines. Maybe Dosdude can get it to work.
Seems like not the whole 10.6 will be for PPC, just parts of it. As I said i have some frameworks from the 10.6 working as well as the iCal app. But unfortunately my 10.5 just doesnt want to cooperate with me and the PathFinder cant be installed due to the Finder not working... SO I will go to the basement in a quest to find an unlabeled DVD of 10.6 installer to repair the system. Then the development of the 10.6 on PPC can continue.

Hi JoyBed,

Do you need a zip file of the Pathfind app ready to run?

Physically impossible.
False. Very possible. Just hard work. There is some PPC code in SL, that's been proven. There are early builds that actually run on PPC just fine.
It would require lots of re-compiling for the architecture. If we actually had the source code for SL, it would be more than possible.
