The real question is why do we make phones with stainless steel when everyone just covers it up with a cheap plastic case anyway?

1. My cases aren’t cheap.
2. I hate to hold an iPhone without a case - extremely slippery and uncomfortable with the squared off design.
3. I like dressing my phone up with different cases and wallets that match what I’m wearing and my Apple Watch bands.
4. My cases don’t get sticky. If they did, I would clean them or replace them.
5. I have a clear case if I want to show off the color.
6. I don’t need anymore stress in my life trying to make sure my case-less phone is safely placed every minute of every day.

I don’t care that some people don’t use cases. I don’t appreciate being criticized for using one.

While I love the look of my 13Pro without a case, I'm too OCD to go caseless. Realistically, I know that about twice a year, on average, I am going to drop this onto a concrete floor or sidewalk. So far I'm on schedule, with one drop this year. My Apple and Magsafe leather cases have taken a scuff or two, but the phone has come out scratchless.

Yep. There are a lot of people on this forum who say they are able to get Apple to replace their phones on AC+ for cosmetic damage however when I challenge them on how they do it, they tend to go quiet and become cryptic by saying there are “ways and means”…
Because there's no other way of justifying the cost of apple care. If you are paying £150 a year of 12.50 a month or whatever it is that should include any kind of damage. I have always never bothered as just seems a waste as I'm actually careful with my phones. I also don't buy that apple will suddenly raise the prices based on assumptions due to more cases of claims.

Actually evidence points to the contrary given how they raised the number of claims a year from 2 to unlimited. More subscriptions than claims.

Apple work off of margins like all other companies. As long as they can maintain profit margins they will not raise prices. If there are more claims they will pay out more for repairs & replacements thus reducing profits resulting in higher premiums for subscribers. Likewise, fewer claims result in fewer payouts and cheaper premiums for subscribers. Business 101.

Also, you sign up on the basis you agree to the conditions. If you don’t agree, don’t sign up. If no one signed up to AC+ Apple would naturally incentivise people with further offerings such as cosmetic repairs or cheaper excess payments for repairs. I don’t like paying fully comprehensive insurance for my car because I have never damaged my own car. I don’t destroy my car to make a claim because of the perception I am owed money by my insurer.

Or be like me and don’t pay Apple for insurance I know I’ll never use. The Out of Warranty cost of replacement is already enough discouragement for me on breaking my phone or having accidents.

Even caseless, near the edge of falling off onto a hard surface. Wait, that’s my 1TB pro max. One sec…

I've been going caseless on my 14 Pro and everything was going fine with the exception of a tiny micro-scratch on the screen (before I decided to at least use a screen protector). All I had was a screen protector and my Apple Wallet on the phone.

Last night my phone fell off the top of my toilet somehow and now have 2 scuff marks around the bezel and also a scuff mark on the camera bump, but thankfully not on the lens. I do have AppleCare +, but I know they don't cover scratches or scuffs.

Anyone know if there are any places out there I can have them fix the scuff marks?
Drop it hard (unrepairable) again, in a way it looks like it was drop once, then use AppleCare+.
Say it fell out of your pocket while biking or so, of course just if you own a bike, or invent some other believable story.

Coworker did that once, and got a new one.

They don’t cover scratches but ummm you can alway drop it from your roof on the concrete driveway :) better yet let me go to your house and throw your phone like a football. Just don’t say it was on purpose and damn there you go.

I was using the 13 Pro without any protection, at the time of exchange for the iPhone 14 Pro. The 13 Pro went for a lesser price so I covered the 14 Pro with a full body screen protector from Gadgetshieldz that wraps all around the phone so I won't get any scratches and the phone's resale value will not go down!

AC+ is a waste of money due to the high premiums caused by scammers who destroy their phones on purpose to get their hands on fresh Apple refurbs which they re-sell on eBay or other marketplaces as “unused insurance replacements”.

I prefer just to take care of my belongings and save the cash.

I dropped my phone in the bathroom too!

Well, I didn’t drop it… it fell out the side pocket on my pants (painter pants pocket, what they now call a cell phone pocket), when I was pulling pants down to use the bathroom.

It was a very hectic three seconds with my pants down as it clattered on the tile and glided across the floor two feet like an air hockey puck.

Quite impressive actually, and I have two scratch dents on a corner, and micro micro scratches on the edge of the glass and two tiny ones on the main part.

Kind of bummed, but also very happy it wasn’t worse.

Just ordered a Cape Cod Polishing cloth, and gonna give it a try.

I tend to buy an expensive case and much prefer the look on a case. Stainless steel is prone to scratching and I have no idea why our iPhone Pro’s use it. It also shows fingerprints constantly. I’d much rather aluminium personally on the Pro and it would shave off a hell of a lot of unnecessary weight on a product that is carried everyday.
After owning a flat edge pro for about a month now, I will agree with you about the fingerprint smudging…. It wasn’t so bad in the 11pro, but for whatever reason it’s so much worse on the flat edge 14pro.

The weight is kind of a nuisance now that I keep it in a case 95% of the time after my recent bathroom fiasco. Now I can’t appreciate the phone’s beauty with the weight just being something to tolerate. Now it just feels like a very heavy cellphone with no payoff :/

I wish I could go naked. Here in California it is so dry my skin is cracking. A 13PM is just impossibly slippery in my dry hands. The iPhone 5 was the last phone that felt great nekkid. Everything else needed a case to not fly out of the hands.

I see a phone as more of a utility - a necessity - my car keys are on it, banking, method of payment, my ability to be contacted and contact, it's now something that's incredibly important. My 13PM is extremely valuable and necessary.

Using a very nice Ryan London leather case on it. Can't be beat imo.

Since you've already dropped it and got some scuff marks I see no reason to start using a case now. Yes, you could prevent it from receiving further damage but you've got AppleCare to take care of any non-cosmetic equipment failures.

I generally use cases on my iPhones, but I was in a weird situation a few years ago where I had to take it out of its case for a single night to fit into a small pocket in a costume. Naturally, that night I dropped it and got a scuff mark. After that I was caseless and it really was more enjoyable to use.
So this is where I’m at as well: I have some minor damage that I now have that “over the mountain” feeling where I’m less concerned about a pristine phone.

The thing that is holding me back from going caseless is that it can EASILY be so much worse the next accident. It may be a few tolerable scuffs, but next time it could be a deep gouge, or a scratches camera lens. 🥶

I've been using a case since getting mine and decided to take the case off one time. That happened to be the day it slipped out of my pocket right onto concrete. Micro chip in the corner of the front glass. Hairline fracture that isn't really visible unless you turn the screen off and use a bright light. Noticeable 1cm scratch at the bottom left front glass that can get a bit irritating when looking at that part of the screen.

I used Otterbox Defender cases on all my iPhones since iPhone 5 I had years ago. I been retired aircraft mechanic and have worked at heights that most folks would get scared and try to escape from. I had one major incident that I had when I dropped my iPhone 7 from three stories up on a flight of aircraft stairs. That iPhone bounced several times hitting the stairs and landed on its front facing camera. I go down thinking oh well kiss this iPhone goodbye.

I get down to the phone on the cement floor and find the phone had shut off and I look at the battered rubber and cracked plastic inner shell of the Otterbox and I flick the power button on and the iPhone came back to life. The phone had a minor scratch on camera bump on it and nothing else. I continued using that phone and replaced the case with another Otterbox.

Today my iPhone 14 Pro is in a Otterbox Defender even though I could by with some cheaper case I continue to use it as I am retired but I still work in my shop and I will continue to keep using that brand case on my iPhones well into the future

Hands up who here also doesn’t give a toss whether other people on the internet use a case on their iPhone or not?

This discussion is a common one on here where so many people argue over whether using a case or not using a case is the CORRECT way to use a phone. I couldn’t care less whether someone does or not unless I am directly responsible for replacing it or not. The mind boggles.
Well actually, I quite like this little *ahem* group therapy session in broad daylight.
