I played with one in the Apple store yesterday. I think it's a very good device, but it's missing something. I think it would work terrifically for a lot of people who use the iPad around the house. I don't think it's a laptop replacement, nor a business machine. I'd love to have the Pencil compatible with smaller size iPads.

I went to the Apple Store to try out the iPad pro. I really wanted it to work since I'm kind of devoted to the Apple ecosystem. However, two major flaws on the iPad pro compared to the surface - no kickstand and bad keyboard.

You like the Surface better because it suits your needs better. This pretty much summarizes this and several others threads on this topic.

iPad Pro, Surface, and MacBooks are tools with different purposes, just like pilers and wrenches. No point of arguing which one is better. What you see as "flaws" may be "features" for others.

Why post here??? Go post this in the form of that brand. The Surface Pro is a horrible tablet with terrible speakers so doesn't really appeal to those looking for an actual tablet. The iPad Pro appeals to those looking for a super tablet and occasionally want to use it as a laptop.

There are people that prefer products other than Apple products. Of course not surprise there. Not sure why they're posting about it in the iPad forum though. Didn't MR create a specific sub forum where people could talk about their non-iOS devices?

I was deciding between the two and chose the surface. So only positive reviews about the iPad pro are allowed here?
No one said that, but you've made a post that essentially boils down to "I went to by an iPad Pro, and was shocked to find out it wasn't a Surface".

We know.

I think these "Windows buyers" feel a need to post on the Apple forms because we are the cool kids at the cool lunch table and they're the ones at the crappy lunch table looking for something to do on a Friday night. :D

I, on the other had went to the Microsoft Store with the intention of buying a Surface Pro 4 (actually, seeing gin the i7s are in yet), where I fell in love with the new XPS 13.... was blown away by the XPS 15 too. Hmmm????

also dropped by the Apple Store, to see the iPP one more time, and quite honestly it seems like kind of a joke with its oversized icons and overall goofiness. My 12 rMB is also so much more portable than that awkward beast.

Now, speaking of awkward beasts, I just don;t get the Surface Book. I was looking at the new XPS 15 which is about the same size though thinner. Has a Quad core, vs the dual core SB CPU. Has a better GPU, has a much better screen, adding a whopping 2" into almost the same footprint. and is ~$500 cheaper than the Surface Book. Hmmm???

that... or all of the tables were taken at the local Starbucks. :p

I saw the iPad pro in the flesh the other day (owned by someone who was already questioning why he spend £800 on a huge iPad), and that's what amazed me - the way the icons were so spaced apart. Looked ridiculous and seems like such a waste of space.

Even moreso with the iPad Pro, seems mad that you can't change the spacing and position of the icons. Why Apple insist on the icons snapping to a grid starting top left is beyond me. Gives no opportunity to sort icons or, especially in the case of the iPhones, have the icons nearest the bottom where your thumb is.

I'm actually coming from an SP3, and I agree it was really amazing. Windows 10 is so much improved over prior generations.

One of the things that really amazed me as well - the i5/8GB ram version handled large PDFs significantly better than my 2015 15" retina (quad i7, 16gb ram). I would get lag, and beachballs if I did even the smallest annotation. That's with everything up to date, and it's not a hardware issue, also resolution set to default. I also tried numerous apps and more or less had the same issue.

Meanwhile - the SP3 handled much, much more annotating wise, and did it smoothly.

I really expected much more from an i5 dual core vs an i7 quad core (with twice the amount of ram).

Anyway, I realized what a mistake I made after I sold it, but now I'm trying out an iPad pro.

If I didn't have the 15" rMBP - I would of went with the surface again.

The iPad pro definitely cannot do everything it did..

It may have something to do with the issue of causing incompatibility in the backup among iOS devices. Currently you could restore your 12.9" iPP backup to a 4" iPod touch, keeping all icon position. What you are suggesting would remove such compatibility.

First off, congrats on your purchase. The Surface line has a lot going for it; I have played with them off-and-on over the past couple of years and even came close to buying the SP2 when it first came out. There are several things about them that make them appealing; a full desktop OS is indisputably useful at times, and the keyboard cover is probably the best you can buy, particularly with that hinge that sets it at an angle. That by itself is an innovative design.

It's not for me, ultimately, but I'm glad you got what suited your needs. The iPP isn't going to be for everyone, though I certainly love mine.

Those XPS computers are nice. My FIL has one (he is rabidly anti-Apple, which makes it tough for him living with my wife and I in our Apple-centric home) and he loves it, though Dell has been pretty tough to deal with customer support-wise. I have to caveat that it might be that he is tough to deal with too. ;)

lol...I haven't had any issues with carting it around; it's certainly less of a burden than my 13" rMBP. We each have our own experiences though. I will grant you that it looks unwieldy when you first look at it, but when you get used to it you get past that initial reaction and realize that it's a pretty portable screen. IMO, anyway.

Honestly, I see the Surface Book as a reference device more than something really intended for mainstream consumers; akin to the Chromebook Pixel. Yes, people will buy it and a lot of them will love it, but it doesn't seem like a fully-baked consumer laptop and so I think it's more about pushing OEMs to up their game in the hybrid laptop market.

Which is more important than making good use of all that extra space? I'm sure it wouldn't be the end of the world if that one time someone decides to back up their iPad pro to an iPod touch, the home screen icons are spread over two or three pages.

I agree with your opinion about the relative importance.
For Apple, it could be a matter of not introducing a feature for the tiny user base of the iPP that would break an existing compatibility involving many times more users.

The new one is not. Again, I'm really, really picky about these things - I purchased Thinkpads for years in large part because of their keyboards. My primary keyboard is a heavily customized Happy Hacking Keyboard Pro. When I say that the keyboard on the typecover 4 is really good, that is strong praise. I think it's better than the MacBook Air keyboard at this point - better feedback with less key wobble and less backlight scatter. Easily good enough to be most people's primary mobile keyboard.

You are out of your mind if you think the new surface keyboard is better than the Macbook Air keyboard. I get what you are saying, and it is improved over the one that sold with the surface pro three, but it is still an extremely compromised keyboard, and I would hate to hate to type a lot on it. I have had it since the 26th as I use a surface for many work tasks, but when I have to type more then a page, I am switching to a real keyboard on a real laptop. The trackpad is much improved but to me you still need a mouse when using a surface.

What, exactly, is compromised about it compared to other laptop keyboards? I'm sitting here next a Thinkpad T440s which is pretty much the gold standard in laptop keyboards. The Thinkpad's keyboard is better. It has more travel and slightly better feedback, and a bit more cushion. The overall layout, total size, and individual key size is nearly identical.

On my other side is a 2015 15" MBP. I have never thought the MacBook keyboards are that great. Tap the keys lightly without depressing the mechanism. The keys make a lot of noise because they are not securely affixed to the scissors. The backlight scatters everywhere - not just where you need it. There is even less travel than on the Type Cover 4 and less feedback and more unwanted play. Again, the overall size is the same as is the key size. I'm just not seeing what kind of advantage it has over the type cover. It's demonstrably worse in several important metrics.

One must be careful.

Sometimes they'll delete your post if it's not Pro-Apple.

My Surface Pro 3 is just terrific :D

i agree i have even recvd a pm from the mods saying i was being rude to members, when all i did was state the facts on how other mfg's have better devices. just goes to show you that not only does the iphone have walls but so do the apple forums. and i'll probally get another pm for this post as well.

They delete your posts for being a dick. Not because you're not "pro Apple". Apple, like many companies, has it's faults. If you can't see them and admit to it, you truly are a sheep.

You on the other hand like to push the envelope every chance you get and make it known you are not an Apple fan. We all get it. You can go relax. :)
