I, on the other had went to the Microsoft Store with the intention of buying a Surface Pro 4 (actually, seeing gin the i7s are in yet), where I fell in love with the new XPS 13.... was blown away by the XPS 15 too. Hmmm????

also dropped by the Apple Store, to see the iPP one more time, and quite honestly it seems like kind of a joke with its oversized icons and overall goofiness. My 12 rMB is also so much more portable than that awkward beast.

Now, speaking of awkward beasts, I just don;t get the Surface Book. I was looking at the new XPS 15 which is about the same size though thinner. Has a Quad core, vs the dual core SB CPU. Has a better GPU, has a much better screen, adding a whopping 2" into almost the same footprint. and is ~$500 cheaper than the Surface Book. Hmmm???
Agree.

The Surface Pro is not a good tablet nor laptop. The Surface Book is the better solution as it is a proper laptop.

But once people actually step out of Microsoft's hype and look objectively, there are much better laptops out there. And I agree that the new Dell XPS lineup is great. The selling point of Microsoft is akin to the Nexus lineup, that the Surface lineup will presumably get better driver optimizations and zero bloat.

But that'll be hard for 3rd party manufacturers who don't have the luxury of getting the OS for free. Laptop manufacturers particularly are on razor thin margins, that's why so much bloatware is bundled these days. Can they truly compete against Microsofts own hardware directly while having to pay OEM rates for Windows?

I wanted to share my input since I bought both devices in the past few days. The SP4 is a great device, and I really like the keyboard. I don't mind using it as a tablet because of the kickstand, and I actually prefer using it in bed over the IPP to watch Netflix or Hulu because of it. The app selection is poor, but like a previous poster said, the majority of the apps I use are Netflix or NFL related. MS office is great, and excel is better than on my old Air 2. I haven't seen anyone mention the snap screen multi tasking on the SP4, which is my favorite feature. You can have Netflix and Hulu up at the same time if you wanted, or Netflix and a web browser. I can also use Ms edge and chrome in two different split views if I wanted two browser windows open. I also use OneNote for my note taking. I'm a huge NFL fan, so this will be great for me this Sunday to have the Sunday Ticket app and chrome open at the same time split screen. I have not bought a Windows device in over 10 years, but I was very happy with this purchase.

For the IPP, I am very impressed. The speed is unbelievable. I find it to be faster than the SP4 (mine is i5) for web browsing and video apps. I am very tied into Apple's ecosystem and I need iMessage. The battery is much better than the SP4, and it is just quicker and easier to pick up and use. The AppStore is much much better, and the battery is great. I havent tried Excel and various note taking apps yet because I don't have the Pencil yet. The Create keyboard is also create if you aren't carrying it around much. I'm very tied in certain apps that I can sync with my iMac and iPhone like OmniFocus. I haven't used Cortana as much on my SP4 because I'm very tied into Apple. I will only create a reminder on my iPad because I know it will show up on my iPhone. I have certain apps on my IPP like Worx Home by Citrix and Good for Enterprise that allows me to be just as productive as my work computer. I can't use them in split screen yet, but the multi task is very good on IPP.

I know this is a huge wall of text, but I really like both devices. You really can't go wrong with either purchase of it fits your lifestyle better. If I HAD to return one it would be the SP4 because of Apple's ecosystem and product ease of use. When I travel and have to pack light, I will only be taking the IPP.

Windows 8's interface, although being ugly, was closer to a tablet interface and I actually liked that (!?). But after upgrading to Windows 10, the whole thing changed back to a laptop interface. In addition to the lack of tablet apps, I have never used my Surface as a tablet since then.

Exactly my point. I feel like Windows 10 is a step in the right direction for Microsoft, definitely some improvements, but as a tablet, it doesn't compare to an iPad at all.

Laptops sold at Microsoft store are all bloatware free regardless of the manufacturer. That's one way.
At least bloatware on Windows laptops are uninstallable, unlike bloatware on let's say Android phones.

Anyone else feel like a size directly in between the Air 2 and Pro is the sweet spot?

It's kind of how I feel about my iPhone 6. I wouldn't mind it being slightly bigger, but not the size of the 6+.

Apparently having options makes me want MORE options.

No way; I think the size is spot on for using it as a productivity device. Split screen is a lot more useful on a device the size of the Pro; I wouldn't want it any smaller.

You know, I keep seeing that people mention that the smart keyboard has very little travel, to me it has as much or more than the surface 4 keyboard. The surface 4 keyboard wins out for me in one way, being backlit which I am surprised was overlooked. I just think we are talking about two different devices, surface 4 is great as a laptop and not great as a tablet, Pro is a great tablet and not a laptop replacement. You pick what suits yours needs best, not hard, but they really aren't comparable devices for the most part.

The smart keyboard has the same key switch mechanism as the MacBook which has far less travel than the Surface Pro 4's keyboard. The SP4 keyboard actually has quite a bit of travel - slightly more than a MBP in fact.

It's a pretty good keyboard considering the fact that it's built into a flat cover; the only issue I have with it is that it feels a little flimsy and becomes quite a bit louder/click-ier when it's hinged. Frankly, though, it's an innovative keyboard design for a tablet and outshines Apple's smart keyboard in a couple of ways.

I do still like the smart keyboard after using at an Apple Store the other day and ordered one for myself, but there's no harm in acknowledging what MS did right with their peripherals.

Of course how good the Surface Pro is as a tablet or a laptop is a matter of opinion, not fact.
But what i find is that for consuming content and the like, the Surface Pro is better than any laptop i've ever used. And for producing content, it's is better than any tablet i've used.

And that makes for a pretty good option for anyone who wants to combine 2 or 3 devices into 1. (the optional docking station makes it a great desktop replacement too).

Tim Cook said "They will start using it and conclude they no longer need to use anything else, other than their phones."

Obviously he was referring to the iPad Pro, and while unfortunately that device doesn't get there for me yet, the SP3 has been filling that role for over a year now.

If I want a tablet, I would choose an iPad over the surface without a doubt. That's why I have an iPad Air. But I think iPad pro needs to be more than a tablet to justify the price.

I didn't mean people who disagree with me are fanboys. I'm referring to people who buy everything of a brand without comparing and testing, Apple or Microsoft. But I did spot a butt hurt fanboy, I was called a paid troll just because I have different opinions.

I have not physically tested a Surface Pro device, and don't need to in order to make the right buying decision.

It runs Windows. /story

Your personal opinion that you do not need a windows device does not make it the "right" buying decision. Maybe the buyer wants to run desktop apps or play PC games that are not available on an iOS/OS device while having something portable?

I don't know how anyone is going to regularly use the Smart Keyboard with the iPad Pro. I tried it last night and it's terrible. Spacing is large, key size is small. I found myself focusing too much on the keyboard to be comfortable using it. Could I get used to it? Sure. But would I want to and enjoy using it? No.

......

I don't why people keep replying to these threads. Let's put it this way - if you can truly say that, without the type cover, you'd choose the Surface Pro over the iPad Pro, then yes, your opinion is different and interesting.

For example, I prefer the N-trig stylus because it has less lag than the Apple Pencil, or, the sketching apps in the Windows ecosystem are much better, like <insert example>.

If not, please please please post in the MacBook forums, where it makes more sense. For example, I prefer the keyboard over the 12" MacBooks new keyboard or I feel that a touchscreen makes the Surface Pro a better laptop because <insert example>.

Really, the Surface Pro is a laptop with tablet-like capabilities. The iPad Pro is a tablet with keyboard-like options. Your opinion is not invalid, but it is not interesting because it repeated ad nauseum and almost invariably never addresses the issue regarding the need to use it with a physical keyboard.

I am very happy that you love your Surface Pro, but if it's to sing praises about the keyboard and how it fits your laptop needs better, they've been done to death. Stick with the Surface Pro, I wholeheartedly agree it's the best choice for you, but please stop posting thread after thread in this forum, very little of value is being added.

I intended to purchase the one that fits my needs, hence the surface pro. Unlike some fanboys here I always try things out before make any judgement.
That's not what your thread title implies - "went FOR an iPad pro" makes it sound like you had your mind 100% made up before.

I went to the Apple Store to try out the iPad pro. I really wanted it to work since I'm kind of devoted to the Apple ecosystem. However, two major flaws on the iPad pro compared to the surface - no kickstand and bad keyboard.

The iPad pro is just to big and heavy to hold. Without a case, it can't stand on its on.

And the keyboard is way below the type cover. No real key travel and I have to say it looks uninspiring to me personally. The type cover finally won me over because I plan to do a lot of typing, writing reports, emails etc.

I had a Surface Pro 3 and its a solid bit of kit but at that time there was no Hackintosh build that fully supported the hardware I sold it on. Was a pity as if I could have OS X running on it I would probably have used it as my daily driver.

After 1 year, even the speed of ipad air will win your surface pro 4. Mircosoft? yeah, it works good in the first half year, then after few updates....we all knew that...

Sure. Like how the safari on the air constantly crashes and reloads web pages? It's a nice tablet I enjoy use. It's not without its problems though.
