Well, it might not be as slim as some of you think. Remember that post on the front page by Arn about retailers being notified about low stocks? If that was official (and it probably was) then we could all be in for a nice surprise. Apple would not let retailers go dry right in the middle of the back to school season.

This is very true. Apple stated (if I do recall) that supply levels would be low through August and into September. It is now just into September, and they didn't say for all of September making an October release unlikely.

It may not be the 9th, but I'm banking on an update at some point in September... and hoping for one too!

The 16th has been a big date for awhile. If they don't do back-to-back events they could still update them - although that may mean no redesigns.

Its gonna be Sept 23 when they release the new macbook, macbook pros

seems about right, let the iPod news settle and then launch the new notebooks. I am thinking they may even come the first week of October but 23rd of September makes more sense for the back to school crowd....

i would hope so but i say it will be just like the last keynote, we thought it was about new macbooks but all we got was the iphone. we had alot more confirmations about a new iphone for that last event just like for new ipods now.

If you ignore the name of the event and the design of the invite, I think most of us would be betting that there'd definitely be new MBPs on Sept 9th.

But it's that iPod themed invite and the "Let's Rock" name that just makes it seem so unlikely.

But who knows, I think there's a chance, a smallish chance, but it's definitely possible. Retailers everywhere are running dry on MacBook Pros and many people are returning theirs to the refurb store due to the Nvidia controversy, this is one of the most crucial times of year for notebook sales and it would, to be quite honest, be pretty stupid of Apple to wait much longer, most of their competitors have had new models out for weeks and weeks now.

Guys, why do you think that 9/9 won't release the laptops too? Remember at the beginning of august when Apple warned retailers to stock up as in the next few weeks the stock will be very limited. That itself is a sign that they do plan on releasing very soon. I think they gave 3-4 weeks so that would fit perfectly for 9/9 release.

So, why do you still think they will not do silent update? If there is no redesign then they will just bump it to montevina with new graphic card and thats it. No need for an event. Even if there was redesign I doubt that would need an event for it as what would they talk about after 10 mins. :)))

actually sept 30,

lets think about it logically? 14 days after the ending of the student deal, making returns have a restocking price, 3 weeks after the ipods have been out, 3 weeks is alot of time for sales, and basically the beginning of a new month

Ok, personally I think we'll have an announcement about the new mbp's on the 9th. Here are a few reasons why I think it "might happen":

1) I'm not particularly discouraged by the fact that the promotional material for next Tuesday appears to be itunes/ipod based. For starters, what product(s) brings in the most revenue? Ipod sales, of course. It would only seem natural to orient the event around the a single product or related products, even if you have multiple ones to announce. I just don't see how ipod ugrades and new itunes features can sustain the entire event. There needs to be more in my opinion to make it worthwhile and generate optimal positive press.

2)Steve Jobs loves his "one more thing" announcements and I can't think of a better effect than announcing upgrades to the mb/mbp/imac line.

3)Retailers/Resellers have been low on stocks for a few weeks now. We've read multiple articles about them being completely out of stock in a few locations and unable to order new ones from Apple. If Apple protracted the release of new products, it seems a severe oversight on their part and horribly poor sales estimate that will cost stores a great deal of money.

4)Upgraded product lines (in this case) is too big an announcement to not take advantage of the press and exposure that the Sept 9th event will bring. What are the odds of having an equally visible event just a few weeks later or even a month later? Surely Apple would take advantage of a large press event.

Problems I still have with 9th being the date:

1)The back to school sale is still to the 15th. That would put them releasing a new upgraded product 6 days before the sale ends on the old product. This runs the risk of really pissing off a great deal of customers who bought a mb/mbp only to have them become antiquated immediately. Yes, there might be a mad rush to return the notebooks and exchange them for new ones but couldn't they do this anyway within 30 days? The forced restocking fee wouldn't deter more than half of the purchasers I wouldn't think. Perhaps the free ipod might make the bitter taste more palatable. The alternative is to have it later in October but that puts retailers drastically out of stock for far too long in my opinion. Unless they are banking on the new ipod announcements to generate tons of sales that would offset any drastic decrease in sales of mb/mbp's while the stocks are low. A late Sept announcement certainly seems more logical, once the sale has passed, but this isn't a simple product refresh. These are new cases for the mb and mbp and warrant having a special event I would think. What are the odds of having 2 events in the same month? Again, October would make more sense but by then stores will have been completely out of Apple notebook stocks for weeks during a very crucial time of the year when notebook sales are the highest.

All the signs are pointing Sept 9th imo since all over the place stocks are dry , don't forget that Apple released new Macs a few years ago when the back to school deal was still on.
.
Makes sense to me to release new notebooks at the same time as the iPods as when folks are dropping by the store to buy a new iPod for school or whatever ( and we all know a lot of people will do )Apple just happen to have the new Macs sitting there as well , it's all about the up sell.

It all depends on how much of the old stock Apple have left ...if it isn't much they'll release same time as new pods , if a large amount is left ( and signs are pointing to there not being ) then they will hold on till stock levels drop .

If Apple announces new MacBooks and MacBook Pros at an iTunes/iPod event, it would be because they are both getting very mild updates - likely a basic spec bump (slightly faster CPU and GPU).

So no new form factors, no new models (MacBook Tablet) and no new styles (different colors or an Al MacBook). And no new features (Glass Trackpad, Blu-ray, etc.).

I, personally, am hoping for more. And that will require it's own event.

Maybe he'll begin the presentation with "one more thing."

*Doors close

Lights dim

Steve walks on

"Boom"

"One more thing"

products*

Sounds right.

"Okay, so here is the new iPod nano. (SJ pulls it out of his pocket) We all know what it does, it's just a bit taller now. And here's the new iPod touch. (Pick it up form the desk) Firmware 2.0 is now pre-loaded, isn't it great? Btw it has GPS now. We will be releasing iTuens 8 later today, too. So, yeah, that's it for the 'rock' part. One more thing, though. Today we are introducing our completely redesigned notebook computers that you guys have been waiting for years... (2 more hours of talk)"

Very likely

Let's review where we stand:

On July 30th, Apple warned retailers that iPod and MB/MBP stocks would be dwindling. They said to order ~4 weeks of iPods, and ~3 weeks of MBs/MBPs.

The Back to School sale is not a big concern. The new iPods will not be eligible, as the info for the sale lists the model numbers for all the eligible iPods. Of course, there is nothing unreleased on there. As for "Buy a new-model Mac, get an old-model iPod", they've done it more than once in the past. Assuming any old iPods are even available for sale at an Apple Store after the event. It isn't exactly a big stretch to think they won't.

The retail info seems to show the notebook refresh happening no later than the iPod one. Actually, it seems to say a week before, but that is now in the past, and it obviously didn't happen. A quick check of the front page shows that a subscription iTunes is unlikely for Tuesday morning.

So......they are going to devote an entire Stevenote to "Here's the new Nano, it's kinda like the 2nd gen one, but the screen is wider, and you can turn it sideways for movies, like the iPhone/Touch. Speaking of which, we sold 18 gazillion iPhone 3Gs over the last 2 months, and are going to make the Touch look like the 3G, kinda, with the curved back. 2.1 is released today, and it has copy and paste. It is preloaded, of course. The rest of you can update via.....iTunes 8, coming out today!"

Nothing too major there, and that's assuming they put out 2.1 and iTunes 8 that day as well. Unless iTunes 8 has some amazing new feature, and we have seen nothing to suggest it does.
