Macbook Air made ordinary Macbooks redundant, and thus the latter was discontinued.
Yes, the point he was making was that Apple decides what it sells based on what it perceives is best for its product lines rather than sales figures.

The reason we don't have a 17" MBP is because the 15" rMBP has a better screen in all regards. The reason we don't have a 17" rMBP is because there isn't a card that can push that many pixels.

Therefore, Apple discontinued the 17" MBP. We don't know sale figures before it was cancelled but it wouldn't have mattered if it was a best seller--they would have discontinued it anyway just like they discontinued their all-time best selling MacBook when the product lines called for it.

Not quite in all regards. The 17" has an area of 129inches the 15 is 100inches.

Thats 23% less screen however you cut it.

A rMBP 17" would run circles around a rMBP 15" in terms of productivity, more panels open etc.. Watching movies on it would be killer too :D

You're wrong. And that's cool. The rMBP sounds better than the 17" (again, I own Both and have been professionally involved in audio production for 22 years, video for 15). As well....if you're an 'all thunderbolt' workflow, wouldn't it make sense to have two thunderbolt ports vs 1? USB3 gotcha. You don't need it....and when it comes to our grading and actual production we ARE hooked up externally both to displays and sound systems. As well....a whole lot more support for the GPU in the Adobe suite with the nVidia card.

If you're TRULY working in a production house, WHY are you using a laptop? Ours is a mixture of 8 MacPros and a pair of Dells.

Take it on the run for a client and we DO use our laptops. In house...workstation only.

Thanks though for your 'cute' comment. I've worked with History, A&E, Discovery and Travel channels.....as you may have noticed, there's a sh##ton of Alaska programming on the air right now and I've been lucky enough to work steady for 7 years in post production (video) and live music production (22 years now).

Good on ya mate! I've freelanced for Studios and History Channel for the past 5 years! Cutting an A&E pilot now actually. And I use my 17" a LOT because I work a lot on the road, and have to take stuff to off-site clients not to mention cutting on the road. Internal storage is so much nicer than having to have a Thunderbolt drive hanging off your laptop when you're on a train or a plane. BTW, when I'm on site, we also work off Mac Pros and Dells. We all have the same desktops dude. Some of us just have more versatile laptops.

The real estate thing seems like a poor argument given that you can set the rMBP in native 2880x1800 on any software you want and get both a 1:1 1080p preview that doesn't fill the whole screen and more space for your timelines and such. Sure the text is tiny but from my experience having tiny text in exchange for a lot of screen estate and 1:1 1080p preview is well worth it.

Everyone I work with doesn't give a rat's ass that you can have a 1:1 1080p preview in the corner of your screen. We use professional broadcast monitors. Besides, taking up that much screen real estate is a ridiculous waste of resources. Good attempt though.

Why would watching movies be killer? You need 4 physical pixels to each video pixel. The max you can get is 1080p on movies. The 17" is 1200 pixels tall. You should think before you post.

Unless you can spec it with Quadro GPUs (never gonna happen on a portable Mac) so you can actually use it for real work on the field, don't bother.

A Maxwell based consumer GPU should allow this when it comes out next year.

The Macbook was the best selling Mac ever and they discontinue it.

That was probably because Apple was making way for the current MacBook Air that came out in 2011/2012. Steve Jobs did say that the MacBook Air was what the future of laptops would be in around '08. Clearly he was right and his future was finally brought to life by the 2013 MacBook Air. Fast and long battery life with the price to match the MacBook.

Um, b/c it's higher resolution, better colour, crisper etc.. all the reasons people rave on about retina displays

Yeah......no. Higher resolution doesn't do anything for you. And if you don't understand that, then "better colour" wouldn't make a difference to you if it kicked you in the balls. You wouldn't be running movies at a native 1920 wide resolution, so you'd be compensating for that by using more pixels. So the retina gives you absolutely no advantage when it comes to watching movies except that you're driving more pixels to do so which costs more battery life.

If that's the case we should all go back to our non-retina panels. Screw Hi-def and all that malarkey

They should take out the Pro out of all there products, no optical drives or Ethernet, spare me your lecture about external devices don't bother leaving me a comment on how a high resolution screen makes up for the lack of ports! Everyone tells me the same thing! You cant even add your own standard 2.5 drives or optical drives!

Like I said before, they should rename it the MacBook Con LOLOL!! :D:D

Well, genius, once you can buy a 4K feature film, then yes, retina will be worth it if you plan on buying one with watching movies as your primary use.

Interesting. We are payed by the same company(ies). Though its weird....as an employee now of Discovery for almost 8 years, guys (and gals) with attitudes like yours don't last long. I'll assume you'll be doing your 'final cut' for A&E if your online attitude is anything like working with you personally.

I've seen and worked with dozens of your kind. They come and go...6 months, outta here. We'll see. Any chance you could PM me with your info? I'm curious if this is your online persona or of there's friends and colleagues of mine that have worked with ya

This is getting disgusting.

-An observer.

this my junk is bigger than your junk stuff doesn't really do anything.

Some of us are just not enamored enough with TB and "Retina" for the tradeoffs. If Apple introduced a 17 without an optical, card slot, and Ethernet it probably wouldn't sell well either.

These same arguments are being made right now about the iTube it's not a matter of more "pro" it's a matter of needs.

Awfully nosy now aren't we? I come and go as I please. I don't just do work for Studios.

Get things done.

People, people.. Things don't get done in the world from too much catty bickering. Working together and being excited about new challenges while overcoming obstacles (what ever they may be) is what produces amazing stuff! NO?!?! Lets hold hands (virtual hands) and think about the re-entry of the perfect 17"MBP together, because that is ultimately an amazing feeling to have. The MBP line is not complete with out the big sister of big sisters.

Fangurl power!

I think the average age in this room is 50+. Although there are exceptions, generally, old people get easily susceptible, rancorous, and stubborn... :D
