My main request would be options for organizing Faces. Rather than one large grid with everyone I know, I would like to be able to group people by families, organizations, and other subgroups.

You can already do that with iPhoto 09

I mostly want a "household" feature for iPhoto. It's a nuisance and a waste to duplicate the iPhoto libraries on the multiple computers in our house. I want an easy way to have the master iPhoto library and then share that to multiple computers in the household.

You can already do that for a while with "subscription" over bonjour technology!

What are your expectations for iLife '10

What do you think will be new, improved or changed?

Post your thoughts about Apple's software suite!

Unless Apple decides to integrate Aperture, Soundtrack and Logic into iLife, I couldn't care less about a new version of the iToys suite.

The only deal saver could be a really powerful and usable version of iMovie.

iweb 2010

I would love to see iweb include the ability to index each page, and to include some of the facilities that are now 3rd party apps. It seems daft that you can't name each page for search engines.

iMovie '10 Wish List:

Solid, no-crash, support for AVCHD ingest.
Ability to import .m2t files.
Third party, Plug-in capability for built-in file conversion on import.
Easier audio trimming and shaping
Ability to see Apple iPhoto event names and file names
Third party plug-ins for titling, transitions, FX, etc.
Ability to burn HD to Blu-Ray
Ability to custom rotate a scene (e.g., 1.5 degrees clockwise)
Ability to handle 24 fps
Ability to more easily handle project and asset files such as moving from external drive to another external drive.
Provide archiving/backup support for multi drives.
Provide fee upgrade path to FCE/FCP

While that's quite a list, a flippant, "then get Final Cut Pro" doesn't support making a $930 jump. Final Cut gives you a MUCH longer list.

My hope for iweb10 is better coding and not the slow loading pages it produces now.

iLife 10 Update Wish List

Must Have:

64-bit for all apps
use of GCD for multi core processing

with these two, the speed hikes will be SOOOO worth it and subsequent releases can focus on feature enhancements. But without these two in combination iLife suite will always be slower than what it could be. Without these two upgrades iLife would not be worth upgrading to.

Hmm...

iPhoto currently seems OK.
As for iMovie, I'd like to see them add blue-screening for the Chroma Key feature (Currently they only have green-screen), analog video capture support, and improved audio editing, as well as some more effects like iMovie HD had.
GarageBand so far seems fine.
iWeb could use better file-import features and more themes.
iDVD could use Blu-Ray support and some more themes.

Other than those, I think iLife '09 covered most of my needs for the programs except iDVD (I can't run iMovie '09 on my eMac, but I used it at my college.)

I would hope the next iLife update utilizes multiple processors along with GPU for faster iMovie performance. Grand Central needs to do something useful with a core application.

In my view iMovie took a few (read: lots) steps backwards with the iLife 08 suite. I'd hope they'd at least consider the return of a proper timeline. I for one haven't used iMovie since they "upgraded" it. Perhaps that was their plan, drive up final cut sales....

just my $.02

yeah. hopefully they utilize everything SL has to offer.

honestly i don't think there is that much to still do. iPhoto could have a better facebook API and iMovie sucks. Garageband is more annoying than ever.

i especially hope they go back to having backwards compatibility. nothing like working on an album and not being able to work on Garageband '08 after editing in '09

pretty annoying

i won't buy '10

I don’t understand this comment. Even if you thought iDVD was for playing DVDs, it would make no sense. QT and iTunes don’t play DVDs. DVD Player (oddly enough) plays DVDs.

i use iDVD ALL THE TIME. it is the bomb.
what i really want is more iWeb privileges, more editing options in iPhoto. to make new images with customized crops, make collages, stuff like that.

I would like to see...

iPhoto & iTunes
  • An easy way to share the library with other user accounts on the same machine
  • Full handlng of photos in iPhoto but leave them accessible on the file structure (for Adobe Bridge and others)
  • An easy way for pics OUT of a library into a (new?) referenced library without losing all meta-informations/tags/faces/places etc.
  • Ability to automatically scan for new pics/tunes (esp. when first bullet is not feasible)

iMovie
Export SD-video in some native resolution format (same for HD, of course, just don't have that to test the current state) like 720x576 for PAL videos

...iWeb
To be able to READ existing html-files that I have, maybe from an FTP-server, preferably from a directory on my machine

Garage Band
Sorry, I'm not a musical person - is it any good? Can't make anything from the user interface...
Screencast Recorder
... isn't part of iStuff? OK, but why does it have to ask for some server first? Can't it just record a *%&$% video to disk?

Why did I switch? I dunno.

Greetings,
SuAlfons

If nothing else changes in iLife... THIS MUST CHANGE!

I want my iMovie projects to be accessible via my AppleTV. I use iMovie to organize all of my videos, just like I use iTunes to organize music and iPhoto to organize my photos. So, why can't I access the videos I've created and organized through iMovie via my AppleTV, or sync with my iPhone?

iTunes just needs to have an additional tab when you have selected your 'device'. The tab should be 'Movies' just like the iPhoto 'Photos' tab. Instead of having to export every gosh darn video and make duplicates of everything... you could just have one copy inside of iMovie and go from there!!!!

Does anyone else agree!?!?!

ilife 10

I would like a real AVCHD support for imovie
- direct file importation from HD and not only via camera
- AVCDH output without transcoding (to keep the original quality)

and for Iphoto I would like folder creation for events

ILife 2010 would include...

Combine Final Cut Express and iMovie 09 to give iMovie a timeline and FCE some of the ease of use of iMovie. Make it free, at least included in the cost of iLife 10. Buy Geethree for the added capability to iMovie.

More templates in iWeb. Add more flash banner capability.
Addition of Soundtrack or at least Audacity functionality.
Let me turn off events, faces and some of the other improvements.
Buy Adobe, Audacity, Mpeg Streamclip, and add parts of them to Imovie 10. That would give us easy sound editing, more video options, more photoshop/iphoto options, more Streamclip type transcoding.
Don't, whatever you do, take users for granted the way you did when, after waiting to update iMovie HD, you forced the major changes of iMovie 08 on us.Buy Lynda.com, and add that tutorial resource so Ilife is more easily learned.

You use iDVD? Really? Over QT, iTunes or VLC?

just hilarious! thanks for having an opinion. iDVD is a nice easy DVD creation tool. not a quicktime player.

I use iphoto a lot. make it faster, allow a better file structure for people who want their own. but most importantly do not keep so many copies of the modified pics around. do it like aperture.

keep improving iweb. it's a easy tool if you need a quick web page.

make iDVD faster, more options.

make imovie more intuitive like iMovie HD was. real timeline and such.
maybe leave a imovie light for short clip making in the package as well. do not keep movies in iphoto. make a dedicated movie library.

iMovie
- Better presets
- Native export
- New themes
- Better integration with other Apple apps

iWeb
- Needs complete overhaul
- WordPress/blogging platform support

iDVD
- Needs complete overhaul
- Blu-ray support with MPEG-4 h.264 encoding
- All themes should be 16:9 and 4:3
- Revamped Slide Show functions (including basic music editing — fit to show, fade in, fade out, etc)
- ‘iTunes Extras’ creation support (including export to Apple TV)

iPhoto
- Home sharing feature (or bring back ‘Photocasts’)
- Better Facebook, MobileMe and Flickr support
- Better Faces detection engine
- HDR support
- Layers (from Aperture) support
- Panorama stitching
- Advanced toolset (blur, edge detection, extract, etc) (If it’s built-in to ‘Core Image’ iPhoto should be able to do it)
- Collage feature (like Microsoft AutoCollage)
- Edge ‘punch out’ feature (like they do in scrapbooking)
- Portrait Books
- Customizable Book Themes
- Performance Increase
- Way to ‘clean’ library (permanently remove all hidden pictures)

GarageBand
- iTunes LP creation (including export to Apple TV)
- Expanded Lessons library
- Better movie scoring
- ACID-like (or Fission-like) waveform editing and export component

And since they’re probably going to update iWork too:

Pages
- native DOC and DOCX saving (I don’t care if it saves both .pages and .doc at the same time, quit making it a multi-step process)
- Keynote-like precision object centering/measurement
- Better templates (particularly resumes and business docs)

Numbers
- Too many to list, build it out more
- More templates

Keynote
- Better themes (including 16:9-designed themes)
- Magic Export to iDVD/iPhone/Tablet/MobileMe/Apple TV (that automates the entire presentation including integrated music and animations based on the timing you choose)

Apple TV should receive a software update to natively playback .key files (including the ability to control files through the remote) so that it can be used in an office environment as a slimline presentation device.

While they’re at it, iWork.com should be free to MobileMe subscribers and should include actual editing capabilities. And Bento should be integrated into iWork as the fourth application, but should continue to be developed by Filemaker.

Also, raising the price of iWork and iLife to $79 each was a mistake. Move iLife back to $49 and iWork to $29 (or better yet make them both $29, Apple’s seen 10.6 OS upgrades surge because of the $29 and we’ve all paid the Apple premium — cut us a break).

iWeb

I've seen some disparaging remarks about iWeb. This is rather odd since iWeb is currently the best way to create a web page. The alternative is to purchase something like Dreamweaver and become a web guru, just to start a simple web page. Not very practical. The iWeb software allows non-web people to design and upload web pages.

I've been in software development since the early 70s, so learning new software is nothing new. iWeb has allowed me to get a web site up and running (and maintained) while I concentrate on the money-making part of my job, designing application software.

So, iTunes is not being updated???

I was pretty sure we'd see an iTunes update as well. Want multithread support! I have a rather large library which I let it organize, but the program seems incapable of doing more than one thing at a time. It practically freezes up when importing files and it is pretty bad when updating podcast as well. Syncing iPods is marginally better but still laborious. Forget trying to stream Airtunes or change the track! (I havent tried doing so through the remote app.)

I would also like better podcast management, including the ability to override iTunes housekeeping feature that stops updating podcasts I haven't listened to in a while.

The DVD player (and iTunes) should expand the slider bar (dock-genie style) so that we can scan to specific times with more precision.

iPhoto ability to create incremental Dvd or cdr backup. An alternative that would select the most recent photos (original and modified could be an option) to fill the selected media and maybe even integrate a "full indicator" toward your next backup. No harm if there is some overlap. This would make keeping optical backup of trusted media a lot easier especially if you had just uploaded some invaluable photos and wanted piece of mind that they would not be easily lost to harddrive failure.

iMovie should be updated so that it works with all the new "flip" cams without loss of pixels, contrast, or fps's. Assuming it does not already… ;)

@#94: "what he said!" lots of good suggestions and some I don't understand...

I'd also like to see a rotation lock button in the iPhone OS Safari app. That's for a different thread though! I have a workshop on Wednesday so I won't be able to geek out on the stream... :(

More than anything, I hope iMovie takes a few steps back to iMovie HD, and starts progressing again, this time keeping the timeline.
And adding layers.
And compatibility with other formats.
Without turning into Final Cut Express!!!

iPhoto

Forgot one:
iPhoto The ability to select whether to automatically open and sync for specific devices. That is, I would like for iPhoto not to open when I attach my iPod Touch (3G, it does not have a camera, but can take screen shots and wakes up iPhoto even if you just have photos saved on the device). Unfortunately, the only way to disable the automatic syncing for it (I have iPhoto '07) is to disable it for all attached devices. However, I'd still like for it to open when I attach my camera.

Note that I also had my iPod Video (5G) sync photos with an iPhoto photo set but it does not open the program.

Will there be a new box set?

Hopes for iLife '10

I would hope it would be user friendly to people that are not Mac savvy. I would hope the apps in it would be compatible with each other instead of having to pick and choose different parts of iLife '06, '08' '09 etc. to complete what (should be) a simple task like burning a quality DVD, never mind a HD DVD.
