- Multiple Artists Support
There remains a problem where a song has 2 (or more) artists and you must choose only one. This means that if you choose Artist A for the Artist field, the song doesn't show up in Artist B's list of songs.

Add a comma separated Artist field like in Mail's To: field. With each subsequent comma, each artist would become a bubble with their name and the song would be attributed to all the artists involved in the song.

So in list view, would the song just appear twice? It would be kinda confusing to have a list that appears to have 100 songs in it (tiny library I know, it’s just an example), but the library tells you you only have 99. Not that I’m opposed to the idea, but they’d have to think about little things like that.

It doesn’t mean 8 either, but that didn’t stop them with QuickTime.

Didn't stop them with Mac OS, either. It went from 7.6 to 8, to stick it to the cloners. Steve Jobs said something about the cloners taking the whole Mac industry "down the s****er."

They use the X when they break from the current codebase to a whole new underlying product. I highly doubt iTunes 9 will be that, as it has historically come at the cost of functionality and Apple can't do that with iTunes.

Unless Apple has been working on iTunes X since v.7 or before. Instead of releasing a re-written iTunes with less features in iTunes 8, they kept it in development, ready to be released when iTunes 9 is due.

I see your point, but this could be resolved by having both artists in the Artist field in the List View in the order that they were input in the Get Info window. Alternatively, only the first artist would show in the Artist field in List View, yet when browsing either artist's songs, the song would appear under each of theirs.

That just seems inconsistent though. Besides, most people don’t use the “browse” function (personally I love it), they just scroll through their library sorted by artist, so unless it appeared twice, this would have effectively no difference except on their iPods.

So, with the keynote only a few short days away, what are some final thoughts and what do you think will be happening to iTunes?

I'm not expecting anything much at all. Maybe a higher bit rate at the store, that's about it for me.

I fully expect iTunes X to be 64-bit Cocoa, with maybe a cosmetic makeover and a visualizer theme.

Or maybe we'll see iTunes X only on the Mac and Windows still on iTunes 8.

Now that you mention the iTunes Store, I wish they would make it faster, so slow for me.:(

so the general jist of what im seein here is:- Carbon (64 bit) most likely making it less bulky and bloated :)

I would love a revamp of the whole media player section of iLife- i.e front row, itunes, iphoto, and quicktime. So each of the 3 programs sticks to what they are good at, i.e quicktime-video. itunes-music/audio and a mystery 3rd program which syncs the various devices you have going on. Which is where iMedia program would come in. As some people have mentioned it would knock out quite a few different birds with one stone. Change the finder/home so that the music, video, photos folders are put into one big folder called media.

Said program could have a side column on the left, like all the current line up do. cept there is just Tunes, Photos, Videos, then each of these opens up into a sub-heirachy kinda thing.... It sounded alot more awesome in my head lol :D

Hope you get the jist lol.

Ohh and make it faster, i personally dont have many problems with speed, but thats just me i think on my own :)

AFAIK, Carbon isn't available in 64-bit, and Apple has virtually stopped with Carbon. EDIT: Fired up Xcode and there's no option for Carbon anything. So they'll either issue a small update for iTunes ore iTunes will become Cocoa.

QT is all-new (for the most part) in SL.

It's called iSync.

You could probably do that with a smart folder in Finder.

I knew i had it wrong, i just couldnt remember what it actually was called lol!! anyways im just thinking ahead, like 10.7 which is still a way off. would be nice to have good media programs/finder intergration. Which is there already, but not excellent if you get me drift :)

Daring Fireball is predicting that iTunes 9 will be written in WebKit. **Smacks Forehead!** Of course! That makes so much sense.

Apple's other cross platform/Windows application (Safari) is also written in Webkit. Doing so allows for a seamless multi-platform transition that works on any OS.

If Daring Fireball is correct in their prediction, not only will the iTunes Store finally speed up dramatically, but the entire application will have to have been written from scratch. That means an opportunity to correct the problems created by all the tacked on junk over the years. iTunes wasn't originally written with video in mind. A re-written app will allow iTunes to be planned out to handle video and audio equally.

I predict that:
- There will be different libraries for video (movies, tv) and audio -- perhaps one dedicated to podcasts as well.
- An interface overhaul with a resemblance to QuickTime X and Snow Leopard's black/transparency theme.
- The store will be better integrated into the application, rather than a window within iTunes that peeks into what amounts to a browser.
- Social integration
- Provision for plugins (i.e. Last FM).

Only the website area is Webkit, the rest is Cocoa.

What is it on Windows? Can't be Cocoa.

I'm just thinking that Daring Fireball is on to something here. iTunes can be coded like Safari since both need to be updated simultaneously for both platforms.

Either way, I think we'll see a 64bit iTunes today. It would make little sense for Apple to urge developers to quickly port their apps to 64bits while leaving its most popular app in Carbon 32bits -- the only major consumer app to do so in the transition to Snow Leopard.

I guess we'll know in about an hour.

Another thing that occurred to me is that Quicktime is the engine that drives all video in OS X. iTunes doesn't seem to be leveraging Quicktime X's ability to play more formats natively.

A redesigned iTunes is overdue by at least a couple of weeks (should have been released with Snow Leopard) because it needs to take advantage of Quicktime X.

For those who upgraded to Snow Leopard, iTunes' slow startup, the Store's excruciatingly slow browsing and the overall lagginess of the app, specially in loading album art in coverflow or grid view and in changing metadata, stands out like a dirty jagged rock in such a polished OS release.

Well due to my impatience and expecting the keynote up, I went to the site [Apple] and read up on everything.

So now I know that I need to wait until 7:00 or 8:00 (PM) to check the site.

Well, all my expectations for iTunes 9 just went out the window...

I don't know about all. I think the new iTunes UI and Store look amazing.

It is a bit faster and looks cleaner. However, the no 64-bit and Cocoa really ticked me off. It seems like a no brainer. Maybe they are having issues with iTunes and Cocoa??

Yes, let's make the iTunes UI that the OS JUST caught up to change so that it can once again clash with EVERYTHING.

iTunes 9. Now with a new hat!

I wonder if the new look for iTunes will eventually be system wide in Snow Leopard? I don't think it looks bad, I just wish they would make it more uniform. The iTunes store now has a darker look while they gave the rest of iTunes a lighter appearance.
