That wouldn't be disappointing to me... that's exactly what they need to do. Can't go through iOS 11 again, it was beta-standard for at least 6 months.

I think it's sad that every year Apple releases a set of new features in iOS and users seem to ignore the fact that it's an operating system and focus more on things that are less relevant. Examples:

iOS7: "OMG it's so ugly bring Scott Forstall back! meanwhile....
  • Redesigned Lock screen.
  • All-new Control Center.
  • Redesigned Home screen.
  • Improved Notification Center.
  • All-new Camera app.
  • Smarter Multitasking.
  • AirDrop for iOS.
  • Find my iPhone with Activation Lock

iOS 8: "OMG it still looks like iOS 7! ewww!" meanwhile...

  • Battery usage indicator. ...
  • New keyboard(s) ...
  • Continuity. ...
  • New camera features. ...
  • iCloud Photo Library. ...
  • Family Sharing. ...
  • Interactive Notifications. ...
  • Messages upgrade.

iOS 9: "Ugh, this is so boring....sigh" meanwhile...

  • Content Blockers. Regardless of the ethical and business aspects of blocking ads, the introduction of content blocking extensions for Safari in iOS 9 is a good thing. ...
  • Battery improvements. ...
  • Siri and search improvements. ...
  • iPad keyboard improvements.

iOS10: "Where is Darkmode!?" meanwhile...

  • The new lock screen and lock screen widgets.
  • The new iMessage app with stickers, animations, games, Digital Touch and more...
  • The new emoji.
  • The new Apple Music.
  • The new Siri and Apple Maps.
  • The new Apple Home app.
  • The new Apple Photos app.
  • The new Apple News app.

iOS11: "iOS 10 was better!" meanwhile...

  • ARKit.
  • Automatic Setup.
  • Document Scanning In Notes.
  • Files App For iPad.
  • Indoor Maps / Lane Guidance.
  • Inline Drawing And Instant Markup In Notes Using The Apple Pencil.
  • iPad Multitasking.
  • Live Photo Editing Options.

You'll note I didn't complain about iOS 11's features (which I like, in that regard it's the best iOS yet undoubtedly)... the complaint was its reliability. It didn't work well (to a level that is acceptable for $500-1200 devices) until at least 11.3.

And what is more "relevant" than how well something works? You can throw in whatever feature you want, but if it doesn't work properly it doesn't matter what it theoretically allows you to do.

That complaint held true for every iOS version from 7 onwards......

You can test all you want, but nothing is going to dig up the odd use-case like releasing to hundreds of millions of devices simultaneously.

You're right it did and I never personally agreed with those sorts of complaints until iOS 11. I genuinely think there was a difference this time round. Yes every .0 and possibly even the next few updates have niggling issues that can't possibly be fixed until a mass audience uses it. But 11.0 - maybe 11.2 wasn't niggling issues. It was unfinished, features missing, design inconsistencies - misalignments, jumps, inconsistency between built-in apps. These are not things that need to be "dug up" by millions of users, these are things that shouldn't get past an art director or Quality Assurance process in a design studio.

I agree with you. Apple should focus on stability but that doesn't sell well. iOS 11 is known to the average user as the version where "they added stickers to iMessage" even though many changes were made. Can you imagine if iOS 12 was a dedicated stability build?

"what's new in iOS 12?"
"nothing!!! Apple sucks!"

I’m not trying to be negative at all. But it seems like all we get anymore is emojis and now Animoji’s. “Useless stuff” imho.

Scroll up seven posts and you’ll have a chronological list of the huge changes iOS has seen in recent years.

Literally all those features that was posted for iOS 11 mean nothing to me what so ever. I honestly couldn’t care less about them. Bring me something useful. Like a dark mode, battery percentage without pulling down from the top right on my iPhone X, a volume rocker not right in the middle of a dang screen. Always on display. I could keep on going.

Honestly I’d rather have iOS 10 on my iPhone X vs 11.

I’d try re-pairing them, and if that doesn’t work, I’d recommend exchanging them. Mine don’t have this issue.
I got them from the Apple store but I’m past the 2 weeks so I doubt they will exchange them.

Ah, so *major* advancements only count if you personally care about them.

What about those who don't care much about most of the things you brought up, but do care about many of the things that were actually included?

If the new WWDC app icon is anything to go by then I expect significant changes to the way iOS looks. More depth etc. Excited to see what is coming.

Tim Cook is going to announce his (forced) retirement - the Apple Board
has had enough of his mistake and goof ball concepts - but instead of
humiliating him they are going to allow him to step down gracefully.

Word is he is going to JC Penny.

Oh, if it were only true. Your post was uplifting nonetheless. :apple:

It's almost as if people want the OS to actually look good, with no weird UI glitches that belong in beta, while running at a solid consistent 60fps without any random stutters which it hasn't been ever since iOS 7's redesign.

Yeah, sorry some of us actually want the quality feel back on top of all of those features which you pointed out. You know, like how it used to be? If you haven't noticed, it's not the lack of features that anybody is complaining about anymore, which should tell you everything you need to know.

I immediately noticed this too and it intrigues me. The WWDC invite and now the app icon are both skeumorphic. Before I updated the app it was just a flat Apple logo on a simple red background, now it has a drop shadow on a slightly textured dotted background with some added depth. I can’t remember the last time they used depth, textures and drop shadows in their WWDC invites or app icons, they have been heavily flat over recent years. These are the most recent designs/artwork from Apple and they made them look like this for a reason:

It leads me to believe they will add some depth, shadows, and texture back to iOS, otherwise why else would they bother making the conscious decision to use depth and shadows above like how they used to before iOS 7? It makes me curious to see if there actually will be a redesign within the UI this year.

I never said that, I was just stating my opinion about those features being worthless to me.

Well that’s great but I promise you more people care about the dark mode and the volume control being placed somewhere other then in the middle of the screen then the features they did add.

Can you really promise that for people who have been waiting for some great multitasking abilities for their iPads and got them in iOS 11, just to pick one example? Surely you can't as a generalized promise like that can't just be applied to everyone, or even most.

The WWDC app and artwork literally never has any useful hints. I’ll eat my words if I’m wrong, but expect iOS 12 to look very much the same as iOS 11.

I’m actually talking about features on iPhones, but yeah I can see where they would want multitasking on they’re iPads.

That was an example essentially to demonstrate what I was talking about. I get there are things you are looking for, just as they might be things that others are looking for, just as there are other things that yet others are looking for that you might not be.

Great list but if the UI and UX sucks it's not enjoyable for me to use those features. I was very confused at the time with iOS 7 which had many great features but it made my perfectly smooth iPhone 4 running and looking like a s**t. iOS 8 was with iOS 7 the buggiest release ever, iOS 9 suffered the input lag issue and iOS 11 is again very buggy with questionable UI changes.
