I'd say Apple's greatest mistake was, and this seems like an obvious one but--, firing Steve Jobs back in the 90's.

I'd argue against that. I'd say Steve Jobs if left in charge back then would have driven the company under as well. He was over confident and probably a bit too heavy handed.

Being fired made him re-evaluate himself and his flaws making him the formidable leader he is today.

That is however my personal opinion. I'd love to hear what others think about this.

Silly polls and people who want to change the spelling of the site's name.

Members that create fake sigs (they post their sigs in their posts).

Newbs that make usernames like "OMG I LOVE MACS!!!!!"

Newbs that end their post saying "OMG I LOOOOOVE MY MACBOOK (or whatever)"

People that don't read the forum rules before posting

People that create duplicate threads

People sell **** in the marketplace (this is not eBay people, go sell your nick nacks elsewhere!!!!!!!)

People that don't agree with me (that covers everything):D

Profanity censors

people that say their children are "gifted" (I know that it has nothing to do w/ MacRumors, but I really hate people who say that)

Oh, I nearly forgot... the fact that I'm not a mod:D

EDIT: @rdowns I agree

Don

Just saying.

I meant people that post there macs, and annoying phrases such as "I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE MY MACBOOK W00T STEVE JOBS IS GOD!!!!!!!! WINDOZE BLOWZ" not something simple like a name or something like MacDawg's sign off.

EDIT 2:
iJohnHenry does make a compelling argument.

Now I shall contribute to the original topic at hand.

I'd say Apple's greatest mistake was, and this seems like an obvious one but--, firing Steve Jobs back in the 90's.

Steve Jobs was fired from Apple in May 1985.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Also, not that I "hate" this, but the community feel has decreased a lot. I think it's wonderful that Arn can quit his job and do this full time, but I think the popularity of the sight has led to a more negative community. And I think this is the reason that older, more prolific posters have left.

A real bummer. But such is life.

This is my biggest "gripe" as well--not that it's really anyone's fault. It just seems like people are a bit more abrasive than they used to be. Before that sort of behavior/tone seemed to be tempered by the community more so than it is these days. I'm fairly certain that it's due to the rapid increase in the popularity of this site which makes the logistics of maintaining a congenial community significantly more difficult to accomplish (the increase in the popularity of the site also has many benefits as well).

That said, I love this site and have had it as my homepage for many years now. All things considered, Arn and the gang have done a remarkable job given the resources they've had available to them and the challenges they've had to overcome.

Some of the suggestions for improvement mentioned here that I also would like to see are:

A refreshed "look" to the site would be nice. Softer edges and a more coherent color scheme would be welcomed improvements. I like Apple's support forums, but there are many other sites that also have a pleasant clean look to them as well. Subtlety is the key to good design in my opinion.

I would like to see some type of rating system where people can rate people's posts up or down and their avatar would reflect their running tallies of good points and bad ones (Jobs points and Gates points maybe?). Perhaps only people with avatars would get to rate other people, and getting an avatar may be based on achieving x number of "good points" in addition to attaining the minimum post count. This may cut down on some of the posts lacking any substance.

Previewing posts from the forum list would be a nice addition.

Personally, I like how every article has a positive/negative voting tally. For many articles this system doesn't really make much sense or can be too ambiguous (as others have mentioned), but sometimes it's interesting to get a snapshot of how the community feels about a given rumor, and the positive/negative feature does a good job of accomplishing that.

I hate to admit this one, but the logo really could use an update. Maybe Arn could keep the current logo as his avatar even after the official one is updated simply because it's so iconic, but I think the site would benefit from a nicer logo. I like the idea of having the logo redesign done as a contest by the community-maybe the look/feel of the site redesign could be done as a contest by the community as well?

It would be cool to see http://mroogle.*************/ incorporated into the search function of the macrumors on the top of the front page.

I don't really use the marketplace, but I think the post-count requirements are a necessary evil. Trust is a difficult and rare commodity on the internet and I think the compromises made to accommodate buying/selling/trading here are quite reasonable considering all of the variables involved. I almost think the marketplace should be like a sister-site with a more craigslist-like implementation, but would be directly linked to our macrumors identities and maintain the restrictions/limitations currently in effect to facilitate/maintain trust between the parties involved.

None of these are really things I "hate" about the site, but I do think they are areas for future improvements.

What did I ever do to you?

Nothing, although your screed yesterday about Americans did irk me.

If you post suggestions, you should expect some to disagree and criticize. Don't take it personally.

Duff-Man says...my dislikes are probably no big surprise:
- people that do not search before creating a new thread about something that's been done countless times, even still visible on the first page of the particular forum.
- people that do not read the rules, or perhaps do but think it does not apply to them

It's not so bad when it is an infrequent occurrence but it has gotten a bit ridiculous the last while. Perhaps newbies need their new threads moderated in some way, which of course I is going to generate work and is not very practical. But tossing practicality aside, newbie threads should go through a few screens before final submission/posting - "did you search," "descriptive thread title?" then one with the "top 10" redundant threads (like best browser, virus on Macs etc etc etc) then finally they'd get directed to the Wasteland with the message "look here and see what *not* to do".

As I said, not very practical but it's nice to vent a little of the frustration the forum gives sometimes....oh yeah!

What annoying to you is different than what is annoying to me, we rarely get people who do that (and if you seem them report them).

You get annoyed with people listing their macs or whatever (probably) because you don't really care but why do I care if your name is Don.

EDIT: Are you stalking my posts or something? It's starting to creep me out!
.

Why because I have answered/asked questions in some threads you were in yesterday?

There are some really good points in here, I personally use MRoogle all the time.

I dislike all fake signatures. Signatures go in the SIGNATURE area, not in the post!

I really hate the dancing bananas ... NOT.
