Worst iMac update ever. Who cares how thin and light a DESKTOP is. Also I bet there is not room to install your own SSD and probably no extra SATA ports. Also it looks like the ram is built into the motherboard like the Macbook Air. I will stick with my 2011 iMac. At this rate my next computer will be a custom built desktop/hackintosh.

Absolutely. Hackintosh is the way to go.

Sharp is coming out with 31.5 inch 4K displays soon.

Go to bed and get over it.

I've been over it since June, when I built my own computer.

But anyway, it's true that I shouldn't complain. I understand that the iMac just isn't marketed towards me as much as I want it to be. I just want it to fit my needs so that I can have one lol.

Unfortunately, I need a workhorse, and the iMac just doesn't fit all the qualifications. You can't be mad at Ferarri for not making a pickup truck I suppose.

Totally agree. Apple's obsession with purty design still keeps Win PC folks like me on the fence. No optical drive means I have to buy that in addition. And now I wonder if you can still open the darn thing up at all or if this is all glued together again. The Mac Mini looks like a better choice. I find all-in-one designs impractical to begin with and this makes it worse probably.

To all you Anti commenters, Apple is giving the consumer what they (we) want. Consumers are swayed by aesthetics. Aesthetics = style, add performance you get a winner. That is what the new IMac represents. Get on board or head over to the PC. I'm sure you can find what you are looking for there.

I'll get the top 27...but I showed the new one online to my wife, and hear from here.."What's different about it?" Geez.

Not sure about that. Yes, Apple is catching up big time. But currently they are catering mostly to a specific crowd. Affluent, design conscious, maybe a bit self centered - yet preachy (you know, the Obama voting Prius crowd). That's all fine and I'm happy for their success. I wish them well. I like some of their products. I think OS X is great and I would like to use it.
However, there still is a large segment of people out there (like me) who want a computer that works, is well made but also caters to some specific uses, namely audio production and photo editing. Interestingly enough: uses that Apple catered to first in a comprehensive way. I really really don't care what design my screen has and less so what the computer looks like. I really don't want an iMac because I want to be able to quickly swap out a failing drive and get back to work. And I want to chose my own monitor based on it's ability to calibrate and use it for photo editing. I prefer if the computer vanishes under the desk or in a rack somewhere. I don't care what it looks like. In short: I want OS X on a very very reliable PC that I can customize to some reasonable degree. I want a Mac Pro but they are prohibitively expensive. That's why I'm still considering throwing a Mac Mini under my desk instead.

What's amazing about it?
The only thing that impresses me is that Apple really cares how thin the damn edge of their DESKTOP computer can be.

.

It's seems really whacky they emphasised how thin it was when it was only the edges. It's a desktop for christs sake! The way it bulges out in the middle just looks ridiculous!

LOL. Glad I didn't wait and got a rMBP last month. Sorry guys, we were waiting for so long.

Hopefully the new Mac Pros come through. I really think Apple will do a good job with them; they have no need to make it super thin.

Honestly? Im dissapointed.

I have the mid-2011 model. 27 incher with the 6970 2 gigs and 16 gigs of ram.

I honestly feel the new model is a step back. The GPU is around 20% slower than the current gen.

Honestly, they need to relax with the thinness, they're actually now WEAKENING products to make them thin.

20% slower? Wow you really need to do some research. The 675MX is already quite a bit faster than the 6970m and I'm not even gonna talk about the 680M which s nearly twice as fast!

I thought about it, asked some advice, thought some more, ordered a May2011 refurbished iMac 21.5" for almost $400 less than 2012 21.5" + external DVD drive. I can take the memory to 12 GBytes for about $40. 500 GB drive is plenty big. The system is for my wife - it should keep her happy for some time - moving over from a Windows Vista laptop (what a POS). Next purchase will be an AppleTV to go with the iMac, 2 iPhones 4s, and iPad2. The assimilation will then be complete.

The new iMac is amazing! What are your thoughts? Shame about December 27" shipping :(

I am not sure I really see the point of the fusion drive. The OS kernel is unix which uses memory to cache I/O operations. Just max out the memory on your box. While obviously not the same as the fusion drive, if you are looking to try to reduce I/O time then increasing memory is a good start and is cheap.

The Fusion Drive technology is different than the hybrid drives on the market today. The current hybrid drives cache a copy of the file or application on the flash portion of the drive for quick access. The Fusion Drive for Apple actually moves the files or application back and forth from the HDD to the Flash drive based on usage. It's a little different and of course, a lot more expensive than a basic hybrid drive.

It doesn't just cache things that you're doing though. If you use Photoshop a lot, for example, it copies all of the files for the Photoshop application to the SSD portion so that it loads it into memory from there instead of the slow HDD the next time it launches.

Happy with it.

I'm a graphic designer in the market for a 27 inch iMac and the specs looks great for what I will use it for. I'm not a desktop gamer and I'm not after the most powerful computer in the world. What the new iMac offers me is basically all I need - the thin design looks great, but its not at all important in my decision to buy it.

I think a lot of the moaners on here maybe miss the point of the iMac. It is the workhorse of the design industry. Every design studio or office I've ever been in use iMacs or Mac Pros. Apple will be fully aware of this and will definitely tailor their iMacs to lucrative markets such as this rather than the casual home user/gamer etc.

Yup. I do web design and development and a BTO 27" is going replace my current iMac.

True, but your files may still be cached in memory anyway and don't need to be reloaded from the fusion drive. I am just wondering if maxing out memory is a more cost effective way to improve performance.

If I buy a new iMac I also need to buy an optical drive and a USB interface. That doesn't sound to appealing when I start adding in RAM, CPU etc upgrades. If they left a firewire port I'd me happy to pick one up.

is their any point buying imac in nov/dec .. with haswell coming out in spring 2013

If you follow that line of reasoning you will never upgrade because there will always be something better coming soon.

I doubt they will upgrade again before the summer

I think it's a nice upgrade and a great design. It would have been perfect if it had one Firewire 800 left but that's not such a big deal. Especially the GPU upgrade is very nice with the 680MX. I don't do CPU heavy stuff so I'm going with the i5

Mine is currently from spring 2009 ( 24 inch). Even though it's still working fine, I'm probably going to upgrade to the 27" in January.

Whiny Boys. . .

Boy, there's a lot whining on this forum.

Boy oh boy, ain't that the truth. Remember back when the 2011 iMac was released, the hue and crying about no USB 3? This time its' all USB 3 as supported by the Ivy Bridge chipset. I've not heard, nor read a single hooray for that one. Sheesh-ka-bob, there just ain't no way please the masses. It's too thin!; it's not that, it's not this. Oh well, ya' can't please everybody, so I guess ya' just please yourself. I suspect the folks in Cupertino are high fivin' like a pack 'o' big dogs this week, ya' think?

Strictly speaking of aesthetics I definitely prefer the 2011 model over the 2012. From a size and weight standpoint, it's irrelevant since it's a desktop. Thermals is a concern, the 2011 model gives users the perception of better thermals, whether that is fact or not compared to the 2012 I don't know.

Since it's a desktop I still personally prefer to keep my ODD, since it's an "all-in-one", rather than sacrifice functionality for form.

Price is a concern, losing functionality while at the same time raising price represents poor value proposition.

If you still have a pc or another Mac you could use their dvd-drive. Apple offers good tools for that. Though it is a bit clumsy that you have to start them for just using the dvd. But it could save you some money and a usb-port.

Intel will first be shipping mobile processors, so the first models to go Haswell will be the MacBook Air (as they will benefit the most from the better battery life and better IGP). Next will probably be the MacBook Pros with Retina Display and, assuming Apple doesn't kill them off, MacBook Pros without Retina Display.

The above will likely be announced at the WWDC keynote.

iMacs use desktop CPUs and those won't be out until summer. As such, I don't expect them launching until this time next year.

As to what I think about the new iMac, I'm a bit torn. I like the CPU and GPU power of the iMac, but not sure I really need it (I certainly don't find myself cursing the performance of my MacBook Air).

I understand "thin is in" and I can live with moving to an external ODD. I am unsure, however, about being effectively forced to going to a Fusion Drive as it sounds like the only pure-SSD option will be 768GB and that is both way more than I need (I find 256GB to be fine) and it will likely add $1000 to the price of the iMac.

My mid-2011 iMac has a factory SSD and I keep my apps and documents on it, with photos, music and movies on an external 4TB HDD because a music track or movie won't play any faster off an SSD than an HDD. :)

So I'm a bit worried about Fusion moving media to the SSD and moving applications to the HDD based on my use patterns, which means that when I do want to fire up one of those applications, it will be "dog slow". I'll be watching the benchmarks with great interest.

I won't be buying a new Mac until the Haswell MacBook Air ships as I am thinking that any my ATD will be a fully-functional replacement for my mid-2011 iMac and it would be nice to just have one machine to worry about.

After thinking it over for a few days I'm going to get the new iMac 21.5 with the highest specs. My 08 Macbook really doesn't cut it for audio production.

No one is clapping because apple added something they should have a long time ago.

Ha! I use my iMac's DVD drive, one external DVD, and CD drive to rip CD's I buy. I just cue the CD's up and let them rip via firewire. Still the fusion drive sounds great.

Ivybridge came out in April, took this long to get them in the machines... I can see another +500 day update for mac, as next update they HAVE to put in SSD's as standard to compete and will want to milk us for standard drives as long as possible whilst they perfect the retina screens and wait to see how Ultra-HD pans out.

Will be a minimum of a year before next update I feel.
