I think its great!!! To all you defunct Apple users, gone to super Windows Build my own Android super Win8 Tower able to handle all things including NASA at half the cost, PEACE OUT!! :D

Unfortunately, I need a workhorse, and the iMac just doesn't fit all the qualifications. You can't be mad at Ferarri for not making a pickup truck I suppose.

Rather, 'you can't be mad at Ferrari for only making a hovercraft'.

We desperately needed new desktop machines and were hanging on for the new iMac. WOW were we disappointed.

After I spent an hour with a new Windows 8 machine today I am even more disappointed with the iMac :(

The touch screen interface is amazing.

I think Microsoft just pwned Apple. Windows 8 makes OSX look old and dreary.

For professional use Apple, for my little company anyway, is done. They have successfully made the switch to consumers hardware only...

We will be switching to Windows 8 machines and probably Windows 8 tablets as well.

is their any point buying imac in nov/dec .. with haswell coming out in spring 2013

Haswell will have performance improvements, but it gets those in part through new instructions such as AVX2, FMA, etc. It will take a bit for the performance capabilities to be realized. It's largely the graphics that will improve the most, and they also anticipate a general price increase due to feature sets-particularly laptop processors. I'll happily eat crow if I'm wrong, but my guess is that Haswell isn't going to magically change computing anytime soon. You'll probably not notice the difference to be honest.

My understanding about the mobile graphics boost Haswell will get, will be with Integrated video. And these would not affect Dedicated video cards. So Mac Mini's == video boost, iMacs == no video boost.

But I could be wrong or thinking of Ivy

No, you're right. The number of graphics "cores" will be doubling and the addition of on-die memory should improve performance. Until this can be used as a coprocessor, there is little immediate value to general computing.

The Fusion Drive technology is different than the hybrid drives on the market today. The current hybrid drives cache a copy of the file or application on the flash portion of the drive for quick access. The Fusion Drive for Apple actually moves the files or application back and forth from the HDD to the Flash drive based on usage. It's a little different and of course, a lot more expensive than a basic hybrid drive.

More expensive? Depends on what you compare it to. At www.dabs.com, they have two hybrid drives. One is the Seagate Momentus, quite cheap but only 8GB Flash. So obviously Fusion drive with 128 GB Flash will cost more. The other is OCZ Technology 1 TB + 100 GB for £328. Fusion drive seems cheaper.

My mid-2011 iMac has a factory SSD and I keep my apps and documents on it, with photos, music and movies on an external 4TB HDD because a music track or movie won't play any faster off an SSD than an HDD. :)

So I'm a bit worried about Fusion moving media to the SSD and moving applications to the HDD based on my use patterns, which means that when I do want to fire up one of those applications, it will be "dog slow". I'll be watching the benchmarks with great interest.

Fusion drive is all software. And it is actually very little software: There is one extension that allows to combine two drives into one, which is all software. And MacOS X has for a long time moved files automatically: There was automatic defragmentation, and there was hotzoning (moving important files to the fastest area of the hard drive), this will just be done a bit more agressively with the fusion drive.

But it's all software, so it is quite possible that it will improve with future MacOS X versions.

- Smaller/thinner - Who cares it's a desktop.
- GPU is made for a laptop, for gamers this will show it's age quickly.
- FusionDrive - time will tell how well this works. 128GB SSD feels small.

128 GB is for OS / software storage for quick access, where the remaning 750 GB is for files.

I may pull the trigger on the current one before December and get the integrated SSD/HDD configuration. Would not buy this new one over a laptop or laptop with ACD. No optical drive??? On a desktop? Seriously?

This would look nice sitting on a desk but in functionality would fall short for my needs.

I have a Macmini and no optical drive, hasn't been an issue for me yet... but YMMV.

Wow what a let down. What is the big bloody deal with going thin as that for a desk top. Major fail apple.... And it took you that long to come up with that

Wish I had bought now in July. Think I'll just pick up the older 27" as there should be a fair few for sale now at a decent price

The only advantage I can see is that it's lighter to mount via VESA. But at the same time the non-user replaceable RAM / HD is NOT a good thing.

Price?

Im loving the new design, I can't wait to get it.

Maybe someone has an estimate for me before I start planning my expenses.

Compared to the current pricing and taking into account that the 2012 will be slightly higher priced,
How much do you think this would cost...

27"
Fusion Drive
Upgraded Graphics

Thanks for the help
