I came from an HTC Inspire to a 4S... before the HTC I had an iPhone 4... Will never make that mistake again in my life. The iPhone 4S is a lot faster than the 4... I'm very happy now.

Did the EXACT same thing. but switched mine IMMEDIATELY!!! I think they poisoned me!

For me, I don't necessarily require a smartphone, but everything now these days are focused on smartphones. The flip phones get no attention and are cheap.

I use mine for Calls, Text, Email, Music, and Camera - Hardly, ever Data (unless you want to categorize Email into this). Ideally, I'd like Apple to manufacture an iPhone for these uses, which should enhance battery life like in the good 'ole days. But that won't happen.

I upgraded from the iPhone 4 to the 4S. The main reason was I was on T-Mobile with the iPhone 4 and my contract expired just now and I decided to switch to a carrier that officially supports the iPhone so I can get 3G and not worry about baseband updates. I switched to Verizon and decided that I might as well get the newest version of the iPhone.

Had I not switched carriers I would not have bought the 4S unsubsidized and would have just waited for the iPhone 5.

Loved the iPod and iTunes. I walked around with my iPod classic and my blackberry. Since the original phone I just need one device for it all. All the extra stuff like the apps, gps and games is a huge plus.

why do you honestly need to post this?

why do you honestly need a $200,000 sports car?

Like Bill Cosby said, "I need a car that goes 180 mph to get to work". :)

Infinity Blade II on an iPhone 4S looks the same and runs just as good on my 1.5 year old device. And I was told this is one of the most demanding Apps on iOS?

So what do you people really need an iPhone 4S for? Is it just the latest and greatest syndrome? :p

What do you honestly need an iPhone 4 for?

How about a worthy upgrade from a two year old 3GS?
The only reason to upgrade from the 3GS is the far superior camera.

Any reasonable person would wait for the redesign if they didn't need the camera.

Retina display? FaceTime? Double the RAM?

I need it to justify my existence. Ever since my ex-wife took my house and half my earnings, this phone is all I have left...

lol

I waited for the 4S to come out before making the switch from a dumbphone + iPod Touch combo partially because I planned to use Verizon domestically and a local SIM card internationally. So, while I probably could have lived with an iPhone 4 (I'm more into playing Words With Friends than Infinity Blade 2 and 5 megapixels is more than adequate), the extra storage space and global phone ability of the 32gig 4S at $299 won out over the 8gig 4 at $99.

iphone 4 -> 4S doesn't make a whole lot of sense unless you want to go to another carrier like sprint or use Siri.

iPhone 3Gs -> 4S makes a lot of sense in that the differences in design, hardware and performance is quite start.

Non iPhone -> 4S makes a lot of sense, get top of the line if you can when changing over to the iPhone

Well put!!!!

I have them both (1 for personal and 1 for work) the 4s isn't a lot faster, it's a step up and IMO going from a 4 to a 4s isn't worth it. I can tell the difference but it's not like "wow, this is a lot faster, the 4 sucks"

Other than first time new users, there's no _need_ for the 4S.

However the brilliance behind it is the huge profit it brings Apple in re-using the same design two years in a row. The cost savings to Apple is far beyond what many would believe.

Furthermore it's the incredible brilliance of the late Steve Jobs ability to convince the public that in order to "be cool" you must be seen with the latest Apple gadget. Proof of which is seen daily here in the forum. The man was the worlds best salesman. Customers clamoring for anything Apple.

All one has to do is read the responses to rumors with the slightest bit of "information" the eager followers say things like "take my money please".

Now in lieu of the master spin man, Apple will surely have to scramble to keep up that momentum & insatiable demand. Mark my word, many will go deep into denial about this statement but there's no denying it if one is honest and aware.
You paint every one with a very larger brush. So basically the only reason I bought the 4s is because I want to be cool and NOT because I have the money to do so. Seeing as the 4s looks exactly like the 4, how would others know I updated? I don't talk to people about my phone so that blows your theory out of the water. Only people that know I even have a 4s are the ones that ask me if I have it.
Now I would agree with you on some of your points but to say the only reason is X is silly. As it stands I actually use my 4 98% of the time as it can be jailbroken and the 4s can't. I know you hate apple but some people do things simply because they can.

Honestly I thought it was going to be the iPhone 5 and have a larger screen. When the 4S (instead of 5) turned up, I was hesistant to buy it. The only reason I upgraded from the 4 to 4S is because I switched from AT&T to Verizon. The speed difference is minimal but I do enjoy the faster text and camera stock apps.

I've owned every iPhone because since the original and I will continue to buy them regardless if the screen is almost an inch smaller then other smart phones and the processor isn't "as fast" as others. It's more then just hardware that pulls me in. It's the whole package deal.

I wish that we could be honest and aware, but we're idiots who buy Apple products and therefore incapable of making informed choices. I stand in awe of your brilliant analysis. Please, help us.

There are people here whose MO is mainly to rile up people and act as self proclaimed voice of reason, meaning they are usually against anything pro-Apple. It's weird because I rarely see such behavior in Android forums I frequent..but in Mac forums there always seems to be such people; they clearly love bashing Apple, its products, and users, but cannot seem to stay away from Apple forums.

As for why we need an iPhone 4S.. it's fast and smooth with a great camera. Speed-wise I feel it's a greater upgrade than some give credits for.

What do I NEED it for? I need it for its email, camera, calendar, calling and texting features.

I enjoy it for its Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram features.

I occasionally need help with maps/GPS and restaurant discovery features.

What I don't need it for is Infinity Blade II.

YMMV.

Brilliant! Just an awesome response ...and thanks for the IB chuckle;)

Considering I paid only $40 to upgrade from my iPhone 4 to a 4S, I'd say the faster data speeds and overall better fluidity on the phone was worth it. Also I changed colors from black to white, and I'm taking more photos now as they seem much better than my friends iPhone 4.

Overall, it was worth the upgrade for me for $40, and I'll be able to sell the 4S for more later than I would the 4. Oh, and I have Siri to set my alarms.

I've been with AT&T for 14+ years. I'm VERY happy with their service in my home market as well as a couple of our common vacation destinations. I'll continue to use their service so signing a new two year term isn't a big deal for me each year (for the new iPhone yearly upgrade). As well, I've owned every iPhone since the original...and as I own a business and have half a dozen phones on my account, AT&T has offered this option on an annual basis. If it wasn't for the subsidization of the phone, I wouldn't have spent the ip4-ip4s upgrade...however, since the first iPhone I owned, I've ALWAYS been able to make a profit of 25-75 bucks! Obviously, by selling my older model. This time, I sold my 18 month old iPhone 4 for $375 in under an hour on Craigslist! That's awesome in my book...an extra 24 bucks and I've now got the 64gig white 4s and I appreciate the speed increase and the better quality phone. However my wife is really excited about a redesign and she's sure AT&T will end the yearly update cycle for us:). She's chosen to hold out with her ip4 til this year's update.

Infinity Blade was not a consideration. Sorry!

I don't need an iPhone, but I got it out of curiosity since I never had one. I returned it in 2 weeks. It was pretty boring with those little icons you open and close. No fun.
