I upgraded (yes, upgraded) from the 4 to the 4S

The data speeds are much better for me (AT&T)
The camera is awesome for pics and video (for a camera, stunning)
SIRI is helpful at times and will only get better
Voice texting/email is a great time saver

Did I mention how awesome the camera is?

If we are debating "honestly need"... nobody honestly needs an iPhone or any phone period for that matter
They are tools, and we pick the tools that do the best job for us
You can drive a nail with your boot or an Estwing hammer
Given a choice, I would take the Estwing hammer every time

Typically when folks question what others are using, it is to justify their own choices
I really couldn't care less what other use, or why
And I don't need anyone else's validation of my choices

Infinity Blade II on an iPhone 4S looks the same and runs just as good on my 1.5 year old device. And I was told this is one of the most demanding Apps on iOS?

So what do you people really need an iPhone 4S for? Is it just the latest and greatest syndrome? :p

Sounds like someone wants to upgrade and needs other people to help him justify it.

Inks is true. I don't NEED my 4S. But it's nice to have. Nice enough in my opinion that it was worth it for me to upgrade.

The "4" is fine for my usage, actually. However, I needed to buy an unlocked phone, and my choices was either an 8GB iPhone 4, or a 16GB iPhone 4S for $100 more. From that, I went with the 4S with no hesitation.

i went from 3gs > 4s

To be honet i wasn't that impressed with performance when I first got it, and the camera seems to bit hit or miss ... but i still like it a lot over my 3GS the more i use it

I upgraded from iPhone 3G and the difference is mindblowing.

You could have upgraded to the 3GS for a mind blower as well. Apple really tried to do too much with the 4.x software on the 3G. They probably acquiesced older customers figuring they could still run new apps, but they'd want to upgrade to the 3GS or 4 as soon as possible to get rid of the irreconcilable lag.

I'm happy with the iPhone 4 and have no reasons to jump to the 4S unless network carriers somewhere unleashed the full power of the 14.4 mbps HSPA+ capable chip versus the 1-2 mbps offered on the iPhone 4 and 2-4 mbps on the 4s. It would probably be closer to the caps if you were right next to a cell tower, but I wouldn't be able to verify that.

Considering I paid only $40 to upgrade from my iPhone 4 to a 4S, I'd say the faster data speeds and overall better fluidity on the phone was worth it. Also I changed colors from black to white, and I'm taking more photos now as they seem much better than my friends iPhone 4.

Overall, it was worth the upgrade for me for $40, and I'll be able to sell the 4S for more later than I would the 4. Oh, and I have Siri to set my alarms.

I have a 4 and the only thing pulling me to upgrade is the camera. But since it was released so late in the year an because I'm considering going back to Sprint (only left sprint in 2008 because of the iPhone) I've held off. Camera is an amazing upgrade though.

I use mine for phone calls, text messages.. you know, phone things.

I'm sorry, were you expecting a different response?

Nobody really NEEDS an iPhone 4s or any modern smart phone really. My ancient blackberry curve could check emails, browse the web(albeit not very well),send texts and navigate with a much less expensive data plan to boot.

Need is a matter of perspective in first world countries. Therefore, this is not a good question.

Honestly?
Nothing a dumb phone cannot do. ;)

However, I do rely on the iPhone's smooth ability to sync my contacts, calenders and so on.
As a phone I find it… OKish.

For all the other stuff like web browsing and games etc I find an iPad a better fit.

IMHO, of course. ;)

You don't "need" a 4S.

In fact my iPhone 4 had made me not even care. Siri is not a required feature for my lifestyle, and the improved camera in a phone is not worth spending an extra $200 for me. Of course others may have different views.

I do "want" a 4-4.3 inch screen in the next iPhone. Alas that is one thing unlikely to happen. I don't care if the screen loses a little bit of DPI, i am frustrated by half of my hands covering the screen while playing a game or just having to use it for browsing.

I like how there is a 64GB model of the 4S so I can store all of my music and some movies/TV Shows on it without having to worry about space constraints. Also I upgraded from Android and I didn't want to buy a phone that was 1.5 years old already.

I wanted to switch from Android back to iOS. There was no point in getting a 4, when the 4S was the exact same price unlocked and without a contract.

why do you honestly need to post this?

why do you honestly need a $200,000 sports car?

1) phone calls (which it does flawlessly)
2) text/pic messages (more reliable than my Android was)
3) Camera
4) GPS
5) Email
6) All other apps.

For mobile computing. Of course, I don't *need* it, but life wouldn't be as interesting.

I could have picked an Android phone, but battery life is a concern ( ?! 4S...) so I chose the latest and greatest iPhone. I was the first batch of iPhone 4S orders so the battery problem wasn't known about. Saying that I'm still happy, I'm not affected by battery life drain as other users.

I needed a new phone after my HD2 fried. BTW my hd2 fried at lunch on 14-oct (launch day...)

wtf kinda question is this? how bout ppl who enjoy photography? how bout ppl who enjoy fast internet or retina display? or ppl who enjoy technology...why do ppl need anything? i don't need a car, i can ride a bike but do i really wanna??

The 4S is the iPhone should've released instead of the iPhone 4. I really don't use any of the functions the 4S provides over the 4 (Siri), but I felt like I had to upgrade my iPhone 4. My iPhone 4 home button no longer worked well (had to press it at least 4x to get it to work each time) and its reception/antenna stunk. It was one of those iPhones that was affected by the antenna problem that never existed. So, if your iPhone 4 is still functioning perfectly well, there really is no profound reason to upgrade. Sure, it has a better camera, but it's not earth-shattering better.

I don't. I'll keep my trusty 3GS thanks.

I came from an HTC Inspire to a 4S... before the HTC I had an iPhone 4... Will never make that mistake again in my life. The iPhone 4S is a lot faster than the 4... I'm very happy now.

people who ask this kind of stuff are probably bitter they can't afford an upgrade from the 4 to the 4S...just get over it
