1.5meg down / 800k upload for $30 a month

fastest we have as we are out of the main town area. I think that in town they are up to like 10 meg down and 800k up for like around $40 a month...

It used to be 8 and 16 before they upped it to 10 and 20, I think? Maybe that's what is being referred to?
Nope, they've never done 8 or 16 (fibre), I've been with VM for years (as Telewest and NTL previously).

They've had 512k, 1Mb, 2Mb, 4Mb, 10Mb, and 20Mb IIRC (50Mb coming soon).

Legal torrents? :p I've probably seen ~2MB in total before. Fastest I've ever tested the connection at using speedtest.net was ~14.5Mb.

I pay €30 a month (~$38) for 16MB but that also includes telephone. If I wasn't so lazy I could change to cable and get 32MB for the same price but at the moment I've no need for the extra speed and the service I have is excellent and has never given any problems!

25GB for $80 on Bigpond ADSL with speeds of no more than 241kbps. However, we're not using anything near 25GB a month, so my parents are going to inquire about getting ADSL+2 in our house, and to find out if it's available. Hopefully the speeds will pick up at least a little bit after we get ADSL+2. We used to have Optus cable in our old house. Unlimited for $70 a month, with speeds at around 9000kbps. Loved it. Unfortunately, Optus cable wasn't available in our new house, so we couldn't get it again.

Not bad, but probably not worth it for me, although I would probably get about 18mb so around 2.5mbs from a torrent. Which is tempting.

I use private torrent sites (for legal stuff only, of course. You pirating bastards!) which max out my connection, maybe it's worth the extra bit of cash a month. It's funny because I remember when I first started on the internet I said to my mate 'If I could just get a steady 30kbps I'd be well happy'.

EDIT:

I'd actually probably get the full 20!

Virgin Media: £32/mth…
Only way I may get it cheaper is by signing up for another 12 months. And since we'll be moving soon that won't help.

But I can't complain about their speeds here. :D

Ok i think you win on whos being bent over the most.

RI, i pay about $55/month for broadband internet AND extended basic TV (65 channels) - i should note that somehow Cox messed up and i am getting about $45 of TV for about $10. I will also note that i will in no way let them know about that.

we did have digital cable and DVR and broadband but $150 to Cox was ridiculous.

Thats not that bad.

I've thought about printing off these posts and going into the cable company's local office. It's just stupid. They have the network infrastructure to provide higher speeds for cheaper. For $45 i think i should get at least 3 down and 512 up. The up speed i'm so very concerned about.

5M/800k, 200 gigabyte limit, $29.99 + $7.00 band rate. Best deal available in Toronto that I'm aware of.
Sounds like a good deal.

Around $45 for cable internet. Daytime speed tests show more than 20Mbps download 1024kbps upload speed, but with cable you'll never know what you'll get at night when more people start getting online. Still, when I am working from home it seems I get better speeds than my friends on DSL.

I just called embarq and i can get 3meg DSL and a home phone for $60.

They guy said i can get just the DSL line and the basic telephone line, but it would be $58 so there really isn't any point.
