honestly it's a joke. I love osx as software but mac computers don't really touch pro for what they offer

as I sit here trying to get imovie to load a simple video and it hangs and hangs and hangs

It is a marketing change folks, the MacBooks will probably show up again in a different form/design eventually.

Keep in mind that there always was a full-feature/smaller-form laptop in the "pro" lineup.

Yes, but the current 13" MBP is definitely not "full feature".

I don't think any machine with integrated graphics should be dubbed a "Pro" model.

At first I was a little ticked about the name change, but then I figured that if the Macbook Pro has never been a "pro" machine, then there is not a reason for Apple to stop using the misleading "pro" with all portables. Honestly why stop there.

iMac Pro
Mac Mini Pro
Wireless keyboard Pro
iPod Pro
iPod nano Pro

Seriously. Apple only makes two "pro" machines, the Mac Pro and the X Serve. The former at points can even be questionable.

Which model do you have?

iMovie's not exactly fast on my MacBook Pro (unibody 2.4 GHz) either.

What is this obsession with the "Pro" label...? Is it an American thing?

I don't want to start some World vs. USA discussion here, but I've worked a lot with software sales (audio/music software, specifically) and I noticed that American customers stood out in that they needed constant reassurance that the products were "pro". Is this product pro? OK, but is it, like, real pro? You know, PRO pro? What pros use it? Will I be pro with this? If not, will you be releasing a pro version later?

We joked about adding "pro" to the name without changing a single thing, and let the placebo effect do all the work.

ProTools. Logic Pro. Neither is more pro than similar products on the market. Logic was called simply "Logic" for many years and it was no less pro than Logic Pro is.

Apparently some people simply must have those three letters or else they can't sleep at night, but... the pro is supposed to be in you, your tools can never substitute for that.

So well put. Shows how well marketing works, and how much ego is involved in some people. The real pros will use a f*@# ibook if it gets the job done.

The elitist Pro people are agitated that, as they see it, the Macbook has infected their little world !!!

They're either newbies to Apple, or they forgot about the 12" Powerbook that Apple sold when the Mac Book was called the iBook, and the Mac Book Pro line was simply called Powerbook.

Exactly ! ! ! !

Funny this entire PRO debate is also in the Photography Community.

Jack uses a Canon EOS 5D, a "pro" camera and makes about $55,000 a year.

Joe used a Canon EOS 40D, a "consumer" camera and makes about $80,000 a year with it.

In Photography the equipment does not make one a PRO, however whatever computer a professional photographer carries would be a pro computer .... I guess!
